TeeJay3800
I've been using Avira AntiVir on all my computers for a long time, but am considering switching to Avast (I would use NOD32, but can't see myself paying for something when there are good free alternatives). Can someone let me know which uses the least memory/system resources, Avira or Avast? Dell Latitude D600 Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1
Moderators hazelnut Posted September 8, 2010 Moderators Share Posted September 8, 2010 Perhaps give Avast a try and see how it is on YOUR machine. Sometimes what is good on one persons machine may not perform the same on someone elses. This can be due to conflicts with other software, etc. I have recently uninstalled Avira (good clean uninstall) and put Emsisoft Anti-Malware on instead. Working Ok so far, will see how it goes. I got the paid version of it in a free giveaway from another forum so it was worth a try Support contact https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general or support@ccleaner.com

Sometimes what is good on one persons machine may not perform the same on someone elses. This can be due to conflicts with other software, etc. I did just that. As far as I can tell, AntiVir uses ~15MB of RAM, whereas the combined memory usage of Avast's processes is ~40MB. However, it seems like Avast offers more protection, such as IM and e-mail protection. Even though the memory usage is higher, I might be sticking with Avast! Moderators Nergal Posted December 17, 2010 Moderators Share Posted December 17, 2010 so after reading Hazelnut's link and relooking at the links I removed I have banned the user, though not removed the posts as it is the links what are spam. This was due to the new information gained from http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1737730&postcount=13 What i dont like is the way they r trying to make money, through a pyramid sell scheme: //ZenOKWebsite/affiliate/ which allowed me to find Easy promotion tools We give you links, graphics, and suggestions on how to promote our products. the link the poster was using was indeed an affiliate link and thus s/he was attempting to make money. Super Fast
What Anti-Virus do you use? Hey, can anyone change Grisoft to AVG? I feel a lot of users are possibly misled by that name. I know that Grisoft IS AVG but many here probably do not know that. Please update the name so the votes can be tabulated in a more knowledgeable manner by the common populace. Thank you! Stev51
Well I think I have tried most free A.V over the years and I think Avira, Avast, AVG, and Panda are all good but I now use Microsoft Security Essentials and its very good had no problems with it at all. Please dont knock it till you have tried it.
Moderators Andavari Posted March 20, 2011 Moderators Share Posted March 20, 2011 Please dont knock it till you have tried it. I've tried just about all free AV's too, and while I agree MSE is very good it's a tidbit too heavy on Windows XP - but that's the fault of XP not having modern optimizations. Moderators Nergal Posted March 24, 2011 Moderators Share Posted March 24, 2011 I install MSE (with customer permission Of course) on the infected computers, that are brought to me and have expired trials of the big boys. I find it to be a very good program as well, not sure anyone was knocking it per se. in fact that is why I added it to the old (very old) poll. Willy2
I don't use any Anti Virus software. Although I regularly run antivirus programs like: 1. Microsoft's Malicious Removal Tool (MRT.exe, in the folder C:\Windows\system32 (Win XP)). Make a shortcut to this tool and place it e.g. on your desktop. 2. McAfee's Stinger. Still regularly updated. (latest version is from april 21, 2011) It, say once every 6 to 9 months finds one or two viruses. 3. Norton Power Eraser. 4. Some other programs that specificly targets one ((small) group of) virus(es). I am still digesting the info I found here. If you're the sort of person that uses common sense and never gets hit by a virus I'd use Avira as it uses no noticeable resources (its what I've stuck with for that reason), I usually install Avast on friends/families systems as it seems a bit more belts and braces, but as a result of that it does seem to have a noticeable effect on system resources IME. Haven't used MSE enough to have an opinion one way or the other.
Winapp2.ini
I use MSSE and I like it a lot. It barely uses any ram, and runs in the background. It's using 28,412K right now on my system, and it updates its definitions about 3 times a day (also can be done through Windows Update) If you wanna test out your anti virus, and how fast it reacts to threats, open a text file and put this text in X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H* See how fast it takes your antivirus to react to it winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
