  1. Defraggler is good and getting better all the time. Most users just defrag everthing. Then they complain it takes too long or hangs on large files. Most of these files don't need defragging any way. I just hope that they keep the Prefetch folder and User Assist history in mind. Plus keep the average user in mind and ignore such files as mentioned above. I also would like to see some of the Vista SP1 defrag startegies incorporated or updated in XP. Yes ,I have used JkDefrag and I find it to be of great advantage to "very knowledgable" users. "Average" users get along fine with Windows Disk Defragmenter. No hassles at all. davey

  3. Hey Zack, Come back and fill us in.I lost track of the thread until tonight. You and Augeas both have me confused,I think. Augeas pointed out that CCleaner does not normally clean anything from drives other than your %systemdrive% unless possibly you are using the Include feature. I think he certainly may be correct. I was surprised initially when you said E drive but you also said "recycle bin".Since I don't use CCleaner to empty my "recycle bin",I was not sure if it would or would not empty all your recycle bins. What puzzles us is how are you doing this. In your last reply you said " So other than that... CCleaner is not supposed to be removing anything from C:. ".This is the reverse of what I understand Augeas to be saying. You may have a "corrupt" folder on your E drive that still needs fixing. As far as using Secure Delete in prior versions of CCleaner some versions were not actually erasing anything. That is why they seemed to be doing it so fast. You are the second user to report Recycle Bin problems on drives other than C drive. davey
  4. Hi frisk, What you are suggesting would drastically slow down CCleaner. You can try what is offered here but no guarantees. It could reduce your tasks tremendously or if not properly backed up,at the minimum ruin you day at the max. Who knows? You do of course. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=99304 Good luck, davey Support your helpful forum !!!.. http://www.CCleaner.com/help/faq/general/c...ut-using-paypal
  5. Hi Eli, It is not so much "over defragging" as much as "over optimizing"'. Some people who don't know any better, like the prior user of this PC, had everything squeezed and compressed so much that every thing new would end up at the end and in a lot of cases Windows couldn't use it advantage to move more important stuff to the front of the disk. That is why I advise "average" PC users to leave the optimization strategy up to Windows Disk Defragmenter. They are also advised not to disturb the Prefetch file and User Assist History. Believe me I have done much research into this matter. Average PC users who don't want to become "techies",don't want to worry about constant updates, should just rely on Windows Disk Defragmenter. Much thought, mathematics, testing and evaluation went into the optimization strategies developed by MS for Windows XP. Advanced users have different needs and know how to manipulate their systems to meet their special requirements . Read more of the links provided by the Author of the Defrag Shootout and you will see that WDD (Windows Disk Defragmenter) performs better than most people believe. This means average users don't have to be "gurus".Just use WDD and they will be OK. When you start changing "Default" options and Registry settings, users begin to negate all the benefits designed into Windows for the average user. Eli, I know you are curious. Here is a link you need to read to protect yourself in advance of other questionable advice.Bookmark it,it's a keeper.I like the whole site.Just ignore the ads in the articles. http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html Best wishes, davey
  6. I go along with that,YoKenny. It makes for good background entertainment. Doesn't slow down my PC either.Except the keyboard and mouse input tends to drop down to 0 if it's a close race or there is a terrific crash!!! davey
  7. No, System Restore may be the only chance you have to recover from a problem before taking more drastic steps like a "System Recovery" or a complete System reinstall. The only thing you might gain is the use of 1 GB of disk space. Make sure you have you basic maintenance procedures taken care of first. See this link. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=96510 Then do some reading on the following website to dispel some of those "Myths" everybody has heard. You apply all his info and your system will be in great shape and so will your knowledge level. http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html davey

  10. Hi Icedrake, If you have Firefox+Spyware Blaster+Spybot and punycode problems (takes all 4) then look here. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=206415 http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6132_102-0.htm...ssageID=2753030 davey You gotta watch out and be sure you got your punycode correct. Sounds like a virus to me. More information on punycode, for anyone who's curious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punycode I guess that includes us IE7 users also? Naagh!!!
  11. Hi cosmicsurfer, It seems to me that you probably ran CCleaner and also selected some or all of the Advanced options on the Windows tab. These options will remove things like Hot Fix Unistallers which will show in your Add/Remove list until you delete them either manually or using the Cleaner function. You probably don't see a long list of security updates like before. All of your security updates are still in effect. You just no longer have the ability to remove(reverse) them. Here is a related thread. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=100704 This link will help you learn to"search" the forum to find lots of information as regards CCleaner or many other topics. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=99958 Thanks, davey Don't forget a new update to the CCleaner Guide came out Feb. 06,2008. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=1504 Bookmark it and save in your Favorites. Thanks for taking your time to make a report. When you come to this forum, not only do you get help but also an opportunity to learn.

HotDog, Is this some sort of group E-mail? Or a confession or what ? Second time I have seen it in the last 1 or 2 months. Maybe you are trying to send the above member a link. You need to tell your people to tell you to delete the other information before sending the reply. davey
  13. Yes,that last "update" was more of a Re-install than an update. First pop-up I ever got from them in months.Click on the little red-x it's gone. Thanks for the nagkiller.Just in case. davey P.S. Oh,no!!! What if it's a pop-up I want to review for specific explicit content like porn ?
  14. What do we have to do. Everybody sign up as a seller and offer every Free software there is.Ridiculous. I know nada about Ebay.Of course Ebay has to get their cut!!! I guess Ebay doesn't care if someone is illegally selling PIRIFORM or YAHOO software on their website. This does not even take into account the GOOGLE software that is probably also being sold illegally. LET THE EBAY SUCKERS BEWARE !!!

  16. That is exactly why I didn't mention any Defrag names other than Windows for Level 1 or Piriform Defraggler for Level 2. The term BEST is arguable to say the least. Have a look here to see what I mean. You can click on Defrag Shootout to review The Last Shoot Out Winners and read the latest in the new shootout. You can also follow the links to learn all you ever need to know about Defragmentation. http://donnedwards.openaccess.co.za/search/label/WDD When people start throwing around the term Best for a Commercial product around this FREE forum Spam warnings start going off. Internet Speed

Yeah,I felt lucky to get 18-24 kbps on dial-up download. Now that we are off the original cables used by Alexander G. Bell running from D.C to Baltimore for his first city to city demo,I am now on a LAN.Things are a little bit better now. davey Thank God for fiber optics.

  20. Hello Daniel, You need to do what I suggested to Jon a few replies back. You may have to use the method of only using one or a few options at a time to determine where this problem is occurring. If you find something, please report back. Thanks, davey
  21. Hi HotDog, I was just just about to recommend your Translation services. You seem to have a few different translators for you.Sometimes it is very basic translation and other times it seems to be excellent English. Was that the Nero 7 referenced in that prior links Thumbnail. We don't have a thumbnail from Sampson yet. You may be on the right track. davey
  22. Hello Sampson, this is David. Did you REBOOT?.Many people must think I am a Fanatic about REbooting but good basic practices help to avoid many strange things from occurring. Have a look at this thread if that doesn't help. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=93242 Of course they may have just come with the laptop software.HP and many others like to phone home 5 or 6 times a day.Who provided the software? Who made the associated hardware? Good Luck, davey P.S. I am glad to find out that those are Chinese simplified characters and not the hard ones. P.S.S. Hey Prince Charming !!! Make sure you understand your friends PC processing habits also.Cleaning up the friends PC can be risky business.I could give you some similar links but I won't. Since it is already early tomorrow morning where you are,you probably won't see these replies for awhile.I would leave you friends entries alone and get us a thumbnail of that Startup list. There are people here who can Translate those entries for you.
  23. I forgot to thank you for the information as to how many other Apps are having similar problems on drive E. Hazelnut has some interesting questions for you also in her reply. My question is simliar. In Device Manager have you tried Uninstalling drive E and then Search for New Hardware.Maybe the proper Vista software did not get loaded for drive E the first time. Just a thought worth trying. davey
  24. Hello Pedro, This is a known problem. The only way around it right now would be to change the way you edit number totals. The bug occurs because of non-standard number formatting in Windows' "Regional and Language Options" ("comma" for decimal point) . See this link. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...amp;#entry99170 Best wishes, davey Thanks for making your report. WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

Thanks to you also, Andavari. You always come up with very useful solutions. I didn't realize that I could block them from actually showing up in my Google searches. I always thought those methods just prevented me from going to those sites. This is great news!!! davey
