  1. AVAST is a good anti virus application and it keeps its definition files updated quite frequently.
  2. I was getting SideBySide event errors listed with another application OSHE (Online Solutions Hosts Editor) as well http://www.online-solutions.ru/en/oshe_hosts_editor.php I installed the C++ Redistribution RunTime Libray twice as there was some problem with permissions that I could not figure out but after the second install and reboot the SideBySide event errors do not appear. This is on a WinXP Pro system as well. By the way, I like Event Log Explorer as it is an effective software solution for viewing, monitoring and analyzing events recorded in Security, System, Application and another logs of Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 operating systems. http://www.eventlogxp.com
  3. Congratulations. I graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto in '67 and was hired by IBM and worked for them for 31 years and had the opportunity to travel all over the world and live in Raleigh N.C. from '90 through '92. I met many wonderful people and ate many varied food items from street vendors to five star restaurants.
  4. CCleaner cleans out the cookies I don't want on both my WinXP Home and Pro systems and I use WinPatrol to view if the cookies are gone and they are not there.
  5. It does not clear Taskbar previous items even though I have the Tray Notifications Cache entry checked: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1238
  6. Smitfraud infections mutate faster than New York Cockroaches breed and unless you have ALL Microsoft Updates applied to your operating system then it will be infected faster than a New York minute. Yes but physically disconnect the system from the Internet connection you have then insure you FORMAT the hard drive after you have saved your favorite pictures to CD or other large capacity storage. This way the system won't be infected quickly as there are nasties out on the Internet that can infect a system in a matter of minutes. You can order a Windows Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft which I did that enables you to install SP2 much faster. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...us/default.mspx It took about 5 days to arrive for me. By the way, I installed Windows Defender and WinPatrol that monitor modifications to the HOSTS file and you can accept or deny the modifications with either one of them.
  7. I'm using Bell Simpatico but I prefer NOD32 anti virus as it has a good reputation.
  8. Are you trying to run it from a Limited User account or an Administrator account?
  9. Yet another reason to NOT install Vista P.S. I'm posting this with my new WinXP Pro system and really like it and it does not require 2GB RAM just to load

    Problem

Problem I don't know of a better place to post this Whenever I look for posts older than one week I get this

    Sound

I have seen this happen on Win98 a long time ago but as I use Steve Gibson's ClicKey utility I would notice the absence of sound right away when I'm typing.
  12. I have CCleaner running on two WinXP Home and one WinME systems and CCleaner has never interfered with the System sounds.

    Lost emails

    That's a nice little application.
  14. That is total BS I have had to reformat my operating system a couple of times because I messed up something and trying F8 Boot to Last Known Good still would not work. If I had my 80GB hard drive as one partition then I would loose ALL of my backups of my emails and applications that I like that I store in a Downloads Folder on the 40GB second partition.
  15. Note that the index.dat files are locked in use by Windows and can only be cleaned at a reboot and CCleaner marks them to be cleaned if you select to have them cleaned.
  16. RegSeeker is now at 1.55 http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
  17. Calendar of Updates has moved to a new Server and its IP address has not propagated out to the DNS Servers so until it does then this is a good board to see application updates. I use WinXP Home SP2 on my 2.4GHZ P4 system WinME on my 500MHZ Pentium III system Windows Defender on my 2.4GHZ P4 system WinPatrol I was so impressed with the Scotty watchdog I purchased the PLUS upgrade AVG Free anti virus it has never found anything HostsMan and HostsServer to manage hpHOSTS and MVPS HOSTS files APC Battery backup for my P4 system as there have been a few 10 second power blips here MWSnap for screen captures
  18. Even if you do un-install the old Sun Java applications then you have to use Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files\Java then manually delete the old Folders. I prefer RegSeeker as it is a safe registry cleaner: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
  19. My Folder has those files Sun Java is a weird animal and comes from a planet that is inhabited by even weirder people
  20. C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations is a Systems Folder and will not be visible unless you enable it in the View that shows its status
  21. Here are mine: Calendar of Updates http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar HOSTS files http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm http://hosts-file.net HostsMan http://www.abelhadigital.com McAfee SiteAdvisor http://www.siteadvisor.com GRC http://www.grc.com/default.htm
  22. Event Log Explorer will show you the events as they happen and will show if uphclean.exe Service is running but I believe that a reboot is necessary to have it work correctly: http://www.eventlogxp.com
  23. I had one when I was working but now that I'm retired I don't need one and my home phone is only an arms length away and if I need one outside there's usually a pay phone within a short walking distance.
  24. My ISP supplied SpeedStream DSL modem automatically connects my systems to the Internet and I have no access to it so I don't worry about it as its their prerogative to do so. From what I read it also has a built in firewall that prevents malicious inbound attempts but on my WinXP Home systems I have the Windows firewall enabled and no other software firewalls installed as they really slow down the Internet connections and are only needed by the truly paranoid people that would love to live in a totally antiseptic atmosphere that is impervious to good and bad bacteria.

    Memory upgrade

I run WinXP Home SP2 with IE7 with several Tabs open plus Outlook Express, WinPatrol PLUS, Windows Defender, AVG Free and Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 applications all running and I see from TaskManager that the RAM utilization is only 75% so that is plenty RAM for me as I don't run Games. I do have 1GB on my AMD system as it is only half as fast as my P4 system.
