    Happy Xmas

Seasons Greetings to all at Piriform and thanks for your work on your applications in 2007
  2. I have been to Niagara Falls in Winter and it was like that: Watching my ol' P4 FORMAT its hard drive over on the left of me then to install the SP2 CD then the remaining 60 plus Updates. Desktop
  3. I believe it has to do with Code Pages ☺
  4. I hear Christmas could never happen in Washington DC: They could not find 3 wise men They could not find a a virgin They do have a lot of asses though
  5. I did that and ran RegSeeker then NTREGOPT then did a reboot and it made no difference. Its my test system and I don't do anything on it before I run it for about a week before updating my WinXP Pro system. I think I'll do that as a FORMAT then reinstall always amazes me at how fast the four year old 2.4GHZ P4 becomes. The system has an 80GB hard drive partitioned into two 40GB drives and I keep all the important stuff on the second partition. I have a SP2 CD from Microsoft that I'll install but there probably will still be over 60 Updates to install. I have nothing better to do as it is windy and cold here and Santa will be real busy for the next few hours so I'll warm this place up with some computing power. I won't be installing the SP3 RC1 software and I'll wait until SP3 becomes GA.
  6. Windows has some files open for quick retrieval of info and they can be scheduled to be cleaned at next reboot. Most notable are the index.dat files that keep info on which sites you visit. Santa has been sighted over Iwo Jima: http://www.noradsanta.org Ho. Ho. Ho. and Merry Christmas to all.
  7. How can I prevent this? This system is starting to slow down to the speed of molasses at the North Pole
  8. I can't change Internet Options now How do I fix this
  9. Note: GPEDIT.MSC is not available on WinXP Home and as I don't have any flavour of Vista I don't know if its available there.
  10. I don't like it It prevents running Disk Cleanup that I think is necessary to clean out the Compacted files before a Defrag after a major download and install of a Service pack to keep the hard drive running at peak efficiency.
  11. I'll try it on my WinXP Home system that I just finished installing the Service Pack 3 RC1 upon.
  12. My WinXP Pro system is running 58 processes with no apparent slowness. I'm running Folding@Home, WinPatrol Plus, AVG Free, IE7 and Windows Defender.
  13. Wow! 336MB download. I'm downloading it on my WinXP Home system right now.
  14. I totally messed up my WinXP Home system with it and had to FORMAT the hard drive and re-install it with all the multitude of required updates.
  15. Please read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague Google is your friend.
  16. I don't have this problem with IE7 This Hotfix indicates that it is for IE6 but this fix also applies to IE7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367 This is also discussed at: http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?showtopic=16635
  17. I have an old PIII 500MHZ 256MB RAM system and it runs WinME real fast. I don't do gaming of any kind and from what I have read that WinME does not include the needed programs for DOS that's why people don't like WinME
  18. I use MWSnap: http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html
  19. A good application to manage the HOSTS file is HostsMan that permits you to automatically update the HOSTS file from a couple of sources I set it to auto start with Windows. I also recommend its companion application HostsServer that I also have auto starting that shows how effective the HOSTS file is at blocking the unwanted sites in its Log file
  20. I spent 7 glorious months in Costa Rica in a small fishing village called Playa Del Coco that is on the north west coast about an hour south of the Nicaragua border. I had the pleasure of ushering in the new millennium partying the night away sipping the local rum that was $2.00 a bottle and mixing it with Sprite that was $6.00 a bottle The next day myself complete with a hangover and a couple of friends went for a tour around Arenal and we met a fellow that was German who had a Costa Rican wife that owned a small hotel where we stayed for a night. I really liked Tamarindo but it was too expensive for me to stay there but it was only a bit over an hour drive there. There was a good sea food restaurant in Playa Hermosa that I ate at every once in a while. I met a young lady from Heredia and we toured around a bit and I really liked the hot springs and mud baths after a horseback ride through a bit of the rain forest up past the village of Curubunde in Rincon De La Vieja.
  21. From my experience I have found the following applications provide my systems with adequate malware prevention AVG Free but I don't have the email component installed as it is un-necessary as AVG will warn you if you attempt to open an infected file McAfee SiteAdvisor provides an indication of a site's content from a Google search or site visit Windows Defender from Microsoft for WinXP and Vista Windows firewall as my ISP's DSL modem has a built in firewall I don't use another software firewall WinPatrol I was so impressed by it that I purchased the PLUS version Keep the anti virus application definitions updated at least daily.
  22. There was a dyslexic person that sometimes had problems sleeping at night because they stayed awake wondering if there was a dog
  23. I liked Stranger In A Strange Land ( the uncut version ) by Robert A. Heinlein, all of the Riverboat series by Philip J. Farmer, Childhood's End by Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Journey of Awakening by Ram Dass, Sadhana, a Way to God: Christian Exercises in Eastern Form By Anthony De Mello plus Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. I like reading and have an extensive library of books that I rotate through every once in a while.
