  1. neighberaaron, welcome. Create a DOS recovery diskette with FORMAT on it. http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/servic...ewBRecover.html Boot the diskette then FORMAT the hard drive then insert the Win98 CD and go to D:\WIN98 folder and run Setup.exe You will need the Win98 25 digit registration key. You will need a PS/2 mouse as it makes running Win98 so much easier. A mouse can be purchased for about $5.00.
  2. Please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia If you don't want your Internet habits tracked then don't use the Internet or use an anonymizing proxy. http://www.heidi.ie/notrax/
  3. Then the HijackThis application should be run and the log placed in the HijackThis log analysis area of this forum to get help with this situation. By the way, what happens if other files are deleted from the My Documents folder ?
  4. Your Dial-a-fix even deletes C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder so if you are so concerned about the history log file being deleted then you should be concerned by your own application.
  5. In my professional and personal experience whenever Windows Update is run again the Windows Update history log is recreated.
  6. I just go to My Documents folder and delete them from there.
  7. This is on WinXP Home so I'm not sure how it would work on other operating systems. Windows Update creates 5 sub-folders and multiple logging files in: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution It tends to become cluttered with the downloaded update files. To clean it out then do the following procedure. Please click Start, click Run, type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please run the following commands in the opened window to clean out the folder. 1. Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter. You will receive a message stating the Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully. 2. Delete all the folders and files in C:\WINDOWS\softwaredistribution 3. Type in "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter to restart the Automatic Updates service... This also has an added benefit of fixing Windows Update when it incorectly installs updates.
  8. Look for the red X errors and double click on it to see what happened. The yellow ! are information errors and are not serious.
  9. I only have one administrator account but have EXTENSIVE protection on Internet Explorer, run Kerio v2.1.5 firewall, WinPatrol and Microsoft anti-spyware and have never had a problem. (knocks on wood) The only question is how to log back into the administrator account after automatically loging into the user account. Maybe you have to log off then the two accounts would show up so that you can select the next one to log into. I would prefer installing prevention protection than messing around with user accounts that still can get infected with some of the nasties out there. The malware purveyers are getting more and more devious these days.

Its best to use 127.0.0.1 and eDexter. eDexter is a local proxy that looks at 127.0.0.1 requests and responds immediatly. It also preserves the format of the site and reduces the number of "Page not found" messages. http://www.pyrenean.com/?page_value=-2
