    Memory upgrade

CeeCee, as you do not say what PC hardware nor what operating system you are running then it is a bit hard to recommend how much RAM to have installed. Some good sites: http://www.crucial.com http://www.memorystock.com
  2. I have a set of Logitech R20 speakers and they are plenty loud for me http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers...49&cl=ca,en
  3. What I use: Cleaning RegSeeker 1.55: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm Compacting NTREGOPT http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ Defragging I use the Windows Defragger No and neither is it smoke and mirrors. It makes me feel better
  4. I'm running WinXP Home SP2 on my P4 system with IE7 and Avast anti virus and AVG Free on my AMD system. The P4 system came up with the following false positive and the AMD system came up clean
  5. Its because the spammer/scammers will take any site that advertises that its FREE will promptly upload their malware so that the nubes that like Frea stuff will get infected because they probably have not kept their operating systems up to date providing the spammer/scammers with more zombie infected botnet systems.

  7. We all have to learn but it is better to ask and listen ( read ) There is a powerful capability of all operating systems called the HOSTS file that can be used to inhibit malware and pervasive adverts from invading your Internet experience but Vista ( all favors ) in its pertinacious wisdom tries to prevent you from modifying it but you should be in control of your own computer not some Microsoft omnipotent minion sitting behind some desk in Redmond uttering I know what's best for you There are two HOSTS files that I use and they are hpHOSTS and MVPS HOSTS files plus I add my own that include com.com I use an excellent HOSTS file manager HostsMan Welcome to the wonderful world of the HOSTS file. By the way, you can join the hpHOSTS file forum at http://forum.hosts-file.net
  8. I tried Vista Basic on my P4 system that the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor indicated that it was acceptable to have it installed. Now I insist that anyone that tries to get me to install Vista wash their mouth out with soap and hop around on one foot with a 100LB necklace.
  9. That should be It's like buying an 8 cylinder engine car only to find out it has 7.5 cylinders.
  10. TCPView from Microsoft's Mark Russinovich is very good: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...es/tcpview.mspx
  11. Calendar of Updates is a good site to check about once a week to see if the Security applications have been updated: http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar
  12. Minor nit: Store the previous window size and location so that one does not have to resize the window to see long directory filenames. It is promoted it in Calendar of Events: http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?a...;event_id=43184

    Typo

    I'm a Canuck EH! so I don't care.
  14. I use Index.dat Suite to clear the index.dat files. Windows will always create the index.dat files it needs on every reboot.
  15. I guess you should also block Download.com, www.majorgeeks.com and www.microsoft.com/downloads McAfee SiteAdvisor classifies known sites as Good, Intermediate or Bad in Google searches and there are versions for Internet Explorer and Firefox. PeerGuardian still relies on known malicious sites and can be used for Internet Freedom Of Speech supression. SiteAdvisor does not prevent the user from visiting any site but does provide visible indication of a site's content.
  16. Please indicate what operating system you are using. Sometimes Windows keeps files it needs in memory for quick reference and thus can not be removed until Windows lets go of them. An notorious set of files is the index.dat files that continue to grow and grow unless cleaned during reboot and that is why CCleaner has an option to clean them and they will be cleaned at reboot. CCleaner does not locate all index.dat files so I use Index.dat Suite to clean them plus Index.dat Suite has the added benefit of being able to schedule a defrag at reboot so that the defrag operation can carry out its defrag operation without all applications loaded and impeding defrag's operation.
  17. CraigM, please read: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95-98-me...82-regcure.html post #11 In other words Caveat emptor
  18. I downloded it and saved the zip file to my hard drive then unzipped it and it works fine for me.

    Google Pack

One browser add on I like is McAfee SiteAdvisor: http://www.siteadvisor.com There is version for Firefox as well. I like the fact that it gives a rating of known sites when doing a Google search. It has four indications and that is Green for safe, amber for not so safe, Red for not safe and Grey for not yet rated. You can then click on the rating drop-down menu and choose View site details to see the links the site goes to and comments left by users' experience with the site.
  20. Its way too much info to post here and BlackViper does such a great job of describing the processes which are really called Services: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm Do Not set the Services to the Power User settings as you will most likely have to do a Repair Install of WinXP as some of those services are really needed and sometimes hard to get them working properly due to a required Service that has has not been started previously.
  21. That points to a Microsoft tip: Deleting all Desktop.ini files would prevent this situation from happening.
  22. I use Doug Knox's Removes Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm If you go to his HOME page you will see lots of handy utilities and tips for the operating system.
  23. I'm running WinXP Home SP2 and I see Desktop.ini files in just about every Folder I visit which are un-necessary. I do not do any Folder customization which would require Desktop.ini file for that Folder so the files should be cleaned out if an option to do this is present in CCleaner. Please.
