hewee over at Calendar of Updates is a user of Win98SE and a user of CCleaner I believe so maybe you could ask him if he is having a similar problem.

Win98 is an obsolete operating system and MS has not released an update in several years and it is very vulnerable to many malware infections.

For some reason I could not install Windows Media Player V11 ( WMP ) on my WinXP Pro system because it kept failing with a permissions problem I saw the same tip at the AVG Free forum and tried it and then I could install WMP fine. I use WinPatrol and Windows Defender on my WinXP systems to alert me to things wanting to auto start.

I like and use RegSeeker to find and remove useless registry entries then NTREGOPT to compact the registry. They usually find some registry entries to remove after an un-install and then a compact run usually finds 2% compaction then a reboot is definitely recommended.
