  1. What about the art cache, that can be safely cleaned can't it? (seems to just be thumbnails of videos that have been played)
  2. Agree, it would be nice to have a more efficient secure deletion function, I found files were recoverable after CCleaners deletion recently too. But it is really just an additional function of CCleaner, I don't think its top of MrG's priority list at present, maybe some time in the future this could be looked at (CCleaner 2 perhaps???)
  3. That'll be WOT I suspect. Seemed to slow FF for me and ratings just weren't reliable so I got rid of it too.

    Better than 7Zip???
  5. I had a similar problem a couple of weeks back, it was straight after I updated Firefox to 1.5.0.9 and I'm pretty certain thats what caused it. Thankfully I use FEBE so had backups. If you're quick you may still get your bookmarks back as they are backed up by Firefox itself, though you have to restore the backup before its overwritten by a newer backup. Have a read here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks EDIT: Unfortunately, looking at the date of your post, I suspect it may be too late
  6. I don't think its quite as straightforward as that. If I click on a file such as a dat file that gives the Windows message 'Windows cannot open this file' (or whatever it says), then the next time I run CCleaners issues scan it picks it up as an unused file extension and I've always let it delete these without any problem (in 2 years of using the program). I've just done it now to double check and the icon doesn't change. Obviously if restoring the backup of that particular issue fixes the problem it must be related but there must be some other contributing factor going on, unfortunately I'm not sure what but hopefully someone else will have some ideas
  7. Theres a phrase I never thought I'd hear
  8. I disabled it when trying the MVPS hosts file, hosts file didn't work right for me so put the original back. I noticed my internet seemed slow for a week or two after this and couldn't work out why. Then noticed I'd forgotten to re-enable the DNS client service, did so and my net connection was back to normal. I think its down to the individual users setup whether its problematic or not, I've yet to see a definitive explanation one way or the other.
  9. Thanks for the link, I may give that a try when I get a chance. While were on the subject though - Windows backup saves 'System State', what does that actually backup and is it possible/necessary to back it up with regular backup progs?

    Close Firefox

If your not familiar with it you probably haven't got it (Firefox Preloader). Sorry to ask about task manager again but thats usually what causes it, just wanted to make sure you were checking the processes tab rather than the applications tab. Hopefully someone else will have some better ideas

    Close Firefox

Have you definitely checked that 'firefox.exe' isn't running under the Processes tab of task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete), thats normally what causes it. Do you use the Firefox Preloader tool?
  12. Great extension for anyone who uses Google Maps regularly: Full Map: See more of the actual map on Google Maps by removing everything except the map at the click of a button. Redirect Remover: Redirect Remover detects relinking URLs like http://www.url.com/redirect.php?i=54&u...www.mozilla.org and directly links to the desired target: http://www.mozilla.org (Extension is no longer supported but seems to work well anyway)
  13. Yeah, its always a good idea to try and run with as few extensions as possible. I regularly go through them and uninstall any I don't really need or don't use often. Its easier said than done though with so many great extensions out there, currently using 34 which is the most I've ever had
  14. I think maybe FF leaves the profile folders intact after uninstall and they may need to be removed manually (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) For a clean uninstall, after uninstalling FF make sure the Firefox program folder and Firefox application data folder have been removed. Find them at: C:(or whatever drive letter)\Program files\Mozilla Firefox and C:\Documents and settings\(USER NAME)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox Then run CCleaners issues scan to remove any reg entries. It should then install clean. Don't forget though, if your going to use FEBE to backup your bookmarks and extensions make sure you create a backup before uninstalling
  15. LOL, so it is. Thats just silly, why's that there?
  16. The bookmarks having the Explorer icon isn't a problem, mines the same. Try starting Firefox in Firefox safe mode (Start>All Programs>Mozilla>Firefox (safe mode)) see if the problems still occur. Also to make the reinstall a little simpler try using FEBE (Firefox Extension Backup Extension), then you can backup all your bookmarks, extensions etc then reinstall one by one till you find the one at fault.
  17. Isn't that folder also installed on the computer, I remember having the valueadd folder on mine when it was new. I since deleted it though so can't say where it was Might be worth a quick search of all files and folders of your computer for 'valueadd'
  18. Can't think of anything easier than going to where the close button always is and clicking it
  19. Of course its not installed by default in WinXP Home so it may not be there. I have been hunting for a decent simple to use backup program for a while now as the Windows one doesn't work for me. My current favourite is Abakt
  20. Lifehacker has named OpenDNS as one of the best apps of 2006: http://blog.opendns.com/2006/12/15/lifehac...t-apps-of-2006/
  21. Funnily enough I just used that the other day to remove the add/remove entry for an old version of Flash. Decided to keep it, I'm sure it'll come in handy again at some point. Incidentally OO 2.1 wouldn't install over 2.0 for me either.
