  1. That's cool. I'll keep a comment I was gonna make to myself so as not to spoil the surprise for others.
  2. @ petite_penelope (love that name). I don't want to post the same thing twice, so if you have no luck with Recuva, I'll be posting some other options in this thread after LJC has tried Recuva ... https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46947&do=findComment&comment=276089 I trust you're not in a screaming hurry. EDIT: Welcome to the forum by the way penelope.
  3. That odd looking lump at the back is me by the way. Been here a while ...
  4. "If you go down to the woods today ..."
  5. Hi Spanish Flyer. What about iTunes itself? I would think you could "Add files/folders" to iTunes from any external source unless you're using a different computer to what you had in your iPod Classic days. Apple were pretty touchy about sharing music between different computers. Did a little research ... http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/76808/decrypt-ipod-music-files There's a free utility mentioned in that discussion which isn't at the provided link. You can find it here ... De-Itunify: The other utility mentioned, "SharePod", doesn't appear to be Open Source any more, or free. You can do your own research with that one if you want. Hope that helps.
  6. Hi LJC. I'm not sure as to whether I can give you a definitive solution, but in the absence of any other input I can give you my thoughts and maybe a couple of suggestions/options. Firstly, purchasing Recuva Pro will not give you a better "scanning/recovery" option. The Pro version will give you a few different features and priority support from Piriform, but will not do a better job than the free version. Also, Recuva can not fix a drive, only scan it for files. Secondly, if the slaved drive has been given a drive letter, then that's a very good start. Thirdly, the fact that Windows is asking you to format the drive means that it sees the drive as "Raw". This simply means that the corruption is probably in the boot sectors of the drive, which in turn means that Windows has no info from that part of the drive to tell it what's actually on there, including the type of file system. As long as the drive hasn't been formatted, then for all intents and purposes your data should still be there. The only problem is getting at it. Can I assume that you would be happy to get your personal data and then reinstall Windows afterwards? That's the plan anyway. I assume from that statement that you haven't yet ran Recuva. If not, try running it and make sure in "Options/Actions" you select "Scan for non deleted files". I would also suggest selecting "Restore Folder Structure". This will display any recovered files in the same folder structure they inhabited on the problem drive, which makes choosing what you want to recover a lot easier IMHO. If this doesn't work then try selecting "Deep Scan", which may take some time depending upon the size of the drive. If you do have some success then remember to recover to a different drive. Obvious probably, but worth a mention. Finally, if you have no success with Recuva, then there are other options, but one thing at a time.
  7. Hi calthax, and welcome to the forum. The devs would have to respond to answer that, but I will say that if you personally find that an older version works better for you, then I would suggest using that version. Lots of folk do that with software, including myself, you just have to be careful about using old software which may carry security risks, which an old version of Defraggler wouldn't. Hope that helps.
  8. Hi LJC, and welcome to the forum. Can you start your own, new topic, as it's not good to try responding to two different posters with slightly different problems. You'll also give yourself a better opportunity for a response with a separate topic. Thanks.
  9. Hi Jonathanese, and welcome to the forum. CCEnhancer is an unofficial product and is in no way supported by Piriform. As long as you are using it, then I'm afraid we can't offer you any advice at all. This isn't sour grapes, just the fact that we can't give advice when an unofficial, unsupported product is ran with CCleaner. Sorry about that.
  10. I can only speak of WhatsApp from my own experience, and re the Facebook connection, I discovered an option just recently in "Settings/Account" to choose not to have my WhatsApp details shared with Facebook. A no-brainer for me as I don't use Facebook. But, the option was there, and once you tick off your choice, it disappears. https://www.whatsapp.com/legal/ I'm not a WhatsApp fan boy, although I do think it's a fantastic app, and unlike a lot of others, still doesn't hit you with ads at every turn. In fact so far it hasn't hit me with any ads at all. Re the privacy side, I'm becoming a lot more of a realist about how much privacy we actually have in this world and in the real one. For instance, how many councils quite legally sell your "private" information to commercial interests? I know mine does, because I questioned a spam caller as to how they got my number, and she admitted their company buys them from local councils. A recent example ... Local councils sell on YOUR details for £64,000: As long as WhatsApp continues to encrypt all exchanges of information between users, and I believe they don't store this type of info on their servers (as per their privacy policy), then I care less what they do with my smart phone number, which they must have presumably for me to use the service. Very little is really private these days to the point where you'd have to retire from the world to achieve real privacy. This is just something you have to either accept, or simply not use the various services. In my case, with my family living in another country, WhatsApp and Skype are well worth any negative privacy issues. No big deal is the way I look at it now. By the way, this isn't a contra-argument to my good friend Logins post above, just my take on what one has to accept to reap the very good benefits of very good free software. Now Facebook is something else, but I no longer use it so won't go there.
  11. Hi dasadler. If you've downloaded the Recuva "Installer" and run it, it will install the program to it's default location (C:\Program Files) no matter where you run it from. What you need is the Recuva "Portable" version available to download here ... http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds This isn't a Pro version but there isn't any difference in the scanning abilities of Pro or Free versions. The difference is in the direct priority support and some features. However, because you have purchased a Pro licence you will still be able to contact Piriform Support direct to answer any problems you may encounter using the portable version. Or to request advice. You can find them here ... https://piriform.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new Hope that helps.
  12. Welcome to the forum both of you. Someone beat you to it with the question ... https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46916&do=findComment&comment=275926 Further to my comments there, all I can say is that as far as CCleaner is concerned, Android is like any operating system in that an upgrade usually means that CCleaner will have to update to accommodate the changes. An update is in the pipeline, so the changes, I assume, are being worked on. At least CCleaner is configured to still run albeit with a message stipulating it's limitations with the new Android version. If you want to clean manually, try going into "Settings/Apps" and you should have a list of apps under various headings ie Installed, Running, All etc. Click on the app you want to clean and the resultant page usually gives you an option to "Clear Cache". Menus may differ slightly from phone to phone, I've no idea, but the above works with mine. But, be careful what you clean goes without saying really, as there's usually an option to also clear data. Not a good idea if you don't know what that data is. Hope that helps.
  13. Hi johnm and welcome to the forum. You say you've been using CCleaner with that phone without problems, but you don't say as to whether that was with Android 6 installed. I say that because Android 6 is still in the process of becoming available on a number of manufacturers Android phones and I don't know the state of play with the Samsung S5. I can't find any system requirements on the CCleaner Android support pages, so if you can confirm that it was working OK with Android 6 Marshmallow installed, I'll take it from there. Thanks. EDIT: I've just read a couple of reviews on the Google Play Store stating the same thing about CCleaner and Android 6, so I'm guessing you've just upgraded to Marshmallow. There is a CCleaner Android update in the pipeline but I can't say as to when at this time.
  14. Maybe I should get out more, but I can't think of any businesses that matter to me, or that I actually want to communicate with, whilst receiving pics of my grandkids via WhatsApp. We can only wait to see how this pans out in reality. Edit: Who owns Facebook: It may surprise a few as to who actually does own this outfit, and what they're individually worth.
  15. Good to hear and thanks for the update.
  16. To save anyone duplicating an answer, I've provided a workaround for that ... https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46730&do=findComment&comment=275719
  17. Hi guys, and welcome to the forum. Until this issue is sorted, which could be sooner or later, and you know the location being cleaned, why not use a CCleaner "Exclude" to enable you to keep your boxes checked and protect the locations you mention, as shown here ... Having the box checked will not override the "Exclusion". I'm sure the devs will be aware of the issue you outline, but to be sure I'll point this out to them. Hope that helps.
  18. Hi Jack, and welcome to Piriform. Further to Willy2's suggestion, a CCleaner reg backup file looks like this ... cc_20160817_230631.reg Try doing a search for .reg files and the CCleaner backups should pop up in the results window, with their location. EDIT: Damn, you just pipped me mta.
  19. The Avast issue you outline seems to be a separate one to the other topic login, so I say leave this topic as is. Others using Avast may hit your issue and get some benefit from here, so good info.
  20. Mmmm, it certainly does, and I have no idea why the two different OS requirements posted on the different locations. As this is a predominantly Windows forum it would have to be input from the devs, so I will ask the question for you, and see what comes of it. That's the best I can do for now, so watch this space.
  21. From the CCleaner for Mac support pages ... http://www.piriform.com/support/ccleaner#mac ... hope that helps. We appreciate that, and I'm sure the devs will take you up on that should they require beta testers (or more beta testers), so thank you for the kind offer. Welcome to the forum to both of you by the way.
  22. Not quite there yet rr, but probably soon, and there's a lot I'm liking about it. Best app at the moment is "WhatsApp", which both my son and daughter have. Messages, photos, videos and even phone calls all free via my Wi-Fi. Bit like Skype, which is also a great app. That works as well if not better on my phone than it did on my smart TV. Even the small screen is something you get used to. That "WhatsApp" is also completely ad free. They do this by providing it free for the first year and then a whopping charge of $0.99, or 50p in proper money, per year. No typo there either. My son has had it for well over a year he says and hasn't been charged yet. I'll put money aside just in case. Yea, pretty amazing stuff in a small package.
  23. Amazing how things can change in a few days isn't it. Now a happy owner of an Android phone. Ads in the browser were easy, and I've stuck with the Android browser itself. it was the ads in apps that I just wasn't used to, and apps that run constantly in the background, like Skype since microsoft got hold of, and updated, the damn thing to their idea of what an app should do. Simply disabled a lot of apps, and with something like Avast free, which I've gone back to, one ad popping up after running a manual scan is acceptable as the small cost of "free". One click and it's gone anyway. Otherwise it simply runs quietly in the background. Thanks for all your input chaps, always appreciated.
  24. Thanks Nergal. I believe that would be something like Adaway mentioned above? Or is there something else? Rooting is new to me. I've seen it talked about for a long time but never had anything to root. Although I did have a couple of canals rooted many years ago. EDIT: Getting better at this. Disabled quite a few apps I can't remove, and now looking at browsers. Chrome is installed but I haven't used it yet.
