I've thought that very same thought since the first time I saw a real shot of this rock hanging there in the blackness of space. Sadly, even an invasion from "out there" wouldn't get the folk on this planet pulling together. Too little trust and too much suspicion.
  2. I think there are a few of us on this forum who's fathers actually fought during World War II. My father fought with Montgomery against Rommels forces in the desert campaigns and that's about all I know of it. The only story we could ever get out of him about the entire war was the fact that he was captured, kept in and then escaped from a P.O.W. camp and made his own way to neutral Switzerland. All this time he was registered at home as "missing, presumed killed in action". The first his family knew that he was in fact still alive was when he knocked on the door of his home. The shock of his appearance almost giving his mother a heart attack. Hard to believe, but poor communications and the shortage of available info on the men fighting abroad often resulted in families receiving wrong information or no information at all. The guys currently giving themselves selflessly for their countries deserve a mention also in this topic. Hopefully the end of this year will see the vast majority of them safely home.
  3. The devs do read and consider all suggestions but in the meantime maybe you could add the locations in a CCleaner "Include"? http://www.piriform.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/including-files-and-folders-for-cleaning I'm assuming here that you do know the location of the cache you mention. Hope that helps. EDIT: Welcome to the forum by the way clifton.
  4. Watched quite a lot of the celebrations today from the various beaches. We owe them a lot and it is quite emotional to see those old guys sitting there who actually did it. Apparently, this is the last time some of the veterans organizations will be attending any celebration or commemoration due to the frailty of the guys who are left.
  5. These are more like it LuLu ...
  6. Please be aware that I'm not posting this as a recommendation, but simply passing it on as something interesting and current. IT IS NOT WITHOUT IT'S RISKS!!! But interesting all the same, especially for the guys who have regular reliable "Image" back-ups of their System Drives. http://www.ghacks.net/2014/05/24/get-security-updates-windows-xp-april-2019/ Some of you guys may already be aware of the "Windows Embedded Industry, formerly known as Windows Embedded POSReady", which makes this a possibility, but I admit it's new to me. I would have to think hard about getting into this although I would have the luxury of a back up "Image" to restore my system out of trouble. I think all us XP users would be interested in each others comments on this. Finally, I stress again. Read and research carefully.
  7. It would take us forever to do that Kas, but don't worry I always find it funny when someone does that. Been there myself.
  8. Who's Ashley Greene? She looks a bit like Alice .... Let's call time on both of them, and that's a nice desktop Hav0c. "Alice in chains" maybe? @ Kas Where's your desktop? The more here the merrier. Just seen it in post #16.
  9. I've seen one or two little gems on here recently, and that's definitely one of them. I might just pinch that for my signature.
  10. Whichever Oriental Operating System, make sure you don't lose your Qi.
  11. Bearing in mind it's a cartoon, as soon as I saw that image I saw "Alice". The hair is similar but the eyes and mouth are unmistakable ...
  12. I always wondered what was behind those weird goings on with your XP system. That's the trouble with hardware issues. How do you pin them down? Pleased you sorted it.
  13. Damn, she looks like Alice from "Twilight". Pleased you didn't post the "hot" lady. I hate deleting posts.
  14. This is the first time I've had a phoney Netflix email, but a scam it is (link omitted) ... This appeared in my Hotmail account, and although by coincidence I am a Netflix subscriber, I didn't use Hotmail to register. Obviously a scam as no reputable company sends emails like this, but the unwary can still be caught out. Don't be.
  15. What a delightful turn of phrase mta.
  16. Hi Graham, and welcome to Piriform. Anything recovered with Recuva (or any other similar program) has to be recovered to another drive or partition. You can't undelete stuff as though you were restoring from the Recycle Bin. Recuva will not place files back into their original locations. But, if you haven't done anything since deleting that partition, why don't you try to "undelete" it. That, you can do ... Partition Recovery: (how to) Download from here ... http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition.shtml You can also try ... EASEUS Partition Recovery: Hope that helps.
  17. I've been using a free version of "FastMail" for a few years now. I got the free account when it was "OperaMail" but it reverted back to it's original owners last year and is now independent of Opera ... http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/09/26/fastmail-goes-independent-again-after-the-team-buys-itself-free-of-opera/ I've never had a single spam email and my free account is also free from advertising, which is one of their selling points. Apparently for people with free accounts there is no intention to ever delete them or charge for them. Sadly I don't think you can get a free account any more although I'm not 100% sure of that, but if you want a basic web mail, spam and ad free, it's worth the small fee for a personal account. I still use Yahoo and GMail (not as bad as Yahoo), but for my private friends and family email it's FastMail for sure. Here's hoping it lasts as long as XP. EDIT: I actually have the new DuckDuckGo homepage on my TV's web browser.
  18. Automatic Updating (including "silent updating") is available within the Professional version of CCleaner ... http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download And the "vicious cycle of Uninstall-Install" isn't required. You can install any new version of CCleaner over the top of the previous one without affecting personal settings.
  19. The reason "such a manipulation has been disabled from the Administrator's end" is to prevent inexperienced users from completely crippling an Operating System. It seems the other program you mention pays scant disregard to that, so in my opinion it's a pretty irresponsible tool. A "Ruthless Killing(Deletion)" of an entry is exactly that. Make a mistake and accidentally "Kill (delete)" an important entry and it will probably be next to impossible to rectify. You would probably have to reinstall. If you insist on using a program like that, I would suggest the members on here refrain from giving further advice. The ability to "enable" an entry after "disabling" is absolutely imperative until some time after disabling an entry hasn't shown any adverse affects. We may be giving advice here which isn't acted upon in the correct manner, so I would suggest that you're on your own with that other program, and I'll leave the members to decide as to whether they contribute further.
  20. It hasn't XPloded either! Big man, that is one of your better ones. Very clever. XP has been around for so long and we have so much XPerience using it that we could now be called XPerts, and we need to be as we're now apparently XPosed to XPloits. Insert XPletive for MS here. I won't be XPloring the use of a new OS, and no XPlanation needed for why. Not worth the XPense maybe. Long live XP. I XPect it will still be around long after I've XPired (pinched that one).
  21. 1: Regular back ups of photographs and music using "Karens Replicator", which is just one of her power tools ... http://www.karenware.com/powertools.asp Although it probably won't be updated again due to the sad passing away of the author in 2011, it's still a gem and well worth checking out. Great guide here ... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/the-geek-blog/backup-data-easily-with-karens-replicator/ Appears to be fine up to and including Win 7. Would be interested to hear if it runs on Win 8. ------------------------------------------- 2: Regularly updated "Disk Image" back up of System drive with Macrium Reflect. http://filehippo.com/download_macrium_reflect/ (Free Version) As Macrium Images can be mounted as drives this is also an accessible file and folder back up of everything on the "Imaged" drive.
  22. I'll watch out for the release version. Thanks Derek. Seems Cinnamon doesn't like Germans ...
  23. I would certainly tell you not to feel like an idiot as the object of the exercise is to get your data back. How you achieve that doesn't matter, even if you stumble upon a solution. Even though it sounds like you may not need any further help I'll go ahead anyway although you didn't provide a lot of info. Firstly, because your card probably had corrupted boot sectors as opposed to you having physically deleted your files, you would need to have selected "Scan for non deleted files" in Recuva's settings. That's assuming that your card had been given a drive letter by Windows. Secondly, I wouldn't have suggested using Lazesoft to "Image" the card. We hadn't reached the stage of trying to repair the card or search for the lost partition, which is when I would have linked the original poster to "USB Image Tool". USB Image Tool: (Freeware) Repairing or trying to undelete the partition on a card involves writing to it. Hence the precaution of making a back up Image first. If one process fails, the Image can be restored to try something else. In the case of a memory card (or flash drive or external hard drive) suddenly becoming "RAW" or flagged by Windows to be in need of formatting, then usually the files on that storage device will be completely intact and in many cases it would be possible to either repair the corrupt boot sectors, or to search for, find, and restore the partition the files are residing in. I've done this successfully both to camera cards and drives many times. Sadly this option doesn't seem to catch on with many folk who seem to think that trying to recover their files by scanning with recovery software is the only option. Anyways, if you've recovered all of your files, well done. If you're still in need of some help, by all means come back to the topic. EDIT: Almost forgot, I have tried out "Zero Assumption Recovery" myself, and suggested it's use as an option ... http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=39946&do=findComment&comment=242629
