Have you defragged your registry and your paging files?

What processor and hard drive do you have?
  3. Another good freeware is AutoRuns
  4. I've used CCleaner regularly for a couple of years on both laptops and desktops using wireless without any problems. Are you using the Microsoft wireless client or another? Does your wireless router have an event log? If so, does it show an error when you try to connect to the internet? When you attempt a System Restore, do you get an error message? When you attempt a System Restore, are you closing any applications that might be protecting/locking any files, e.g., Norton Internet Security will prevent a System Restore if "Turn on protection for my Symantec product" is enabled.

  6. It's perfectly normal if nothing else is running. It's not a real process, it shows the idle (unused) CPU time.

    Java stuff

I found that installing the new version and then uninstalling the old, left old registry keys and empty folders that I had to remove manually. Uninstalling the old first seemed to produce a cleaner end result.
  8. Did you mean you needed the path to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Cookies ?
  9. The problem is the other way ... you can't control the frequency used by the cordless phone. It can cause the router to effectively slow down as it starts to drop packets. The slowdown may not be noticeable if the effective router speed is not the bottleneck, i.e., it remains faster than the internet connection speed. A signal strength indicator won't show this but if you have a signal quality indicator or a dropped packet report, it'll reveal this.
  10. YES to everything. You seem to have it all correct. I've never used Netgear so I have no opinion in that regard. One thing you should know ... if you have other 2.4 GHz devices (e.g., cordless telephone) they create interference.
  11. It's almost certainly a hoax. Mercury vapour is almost 7X the density of air ... fumes would fall down from the tooth. The fumes you see on the video are probably the water vapour from being dipped in water as the video says was done to raise the temperature.
  12. I'm not familiar with the Toshiba but most notebooks can be run on AC with the battery removed. If you can, try that to see if the problem is too much internal resistance in the old battery.
  13. In most jurisdictions, using someone's internet connection without authorization is theft of services. Also, your neighbour may not legally be able to authorize you to use their connection. Most ISP's have terms and conditions that prohibit sharing or providing access outside the customer's household.
  14. When? Randomly? Running a specific program or task? After a period of inactivity? What operating system and what seems to be missing?
  15. CCleaner lists Office XP in the applications list when it detects HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common and Office 2007 when it detects HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common. Delete those two registry keys (or all of HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office) to remove them from the applications list.
  16. Another problem is that if you work with a file over a period of time, e.g., edit a long document using a word processor, you write multiple copies of the file to disk as you work. A file shredder only overwrites the last sectors to which the file was saved. To ensure that all the interim versions are unrecoverable, you have to use a freespace wiper.
  17. Do you mean control userpasswords2 ?

  22. Actually, a recent incident had me wondering how you install an OS in a worst case scenario. I had to reinstall Windows XP on a computer that no longer detected either of its DVD drives. Luckily it still had a floppy drive and I used the Windows XP 6-floppy set to load enough drivers to enable one of the DVD drives. But what do you do if there isn't a floppy drive?
  23. Even if you hide the update, Microsoft withdraws it and issues a new "version" periodically so it's not technically the same update you hid. If you check the details on the latest one, it's dated 3/20/2007.

    USB 2.0 vs 1.1

Some USB 2.0 cables are marked on the insulation but the lack of an imprint does not necessarily mean it's not a 2.0.
