  1. Thanks Mike, as useful a page as that is, it did not cover what I saw that day. True, the pc was probly a member of a domain before I did this, so I was trying to release it, but needed the root local admin acct to do it and didnt neither see it as a choice or know its password. And I did not want to boot in safe mode to try and use it. SO I searched google with somthing like reset admin password, and quickly found one solution like I described. I simply clicked start/run and entered a short command. I then saw a properties page that asked for a new pw. When I clicked OK, I could then see administrator on the welcome screen with my new pw. lol This is one of those things that will haunt me, but I have come to terms with. I will never know what the stipulations for it working were, but I wanted to find out if it works all the time everytime. (probly not)ie it probly didnt have a pw for the admin acct... Meantime, when you look at this log file I have here for this pc, how much of its processes are really necessary ? BTW, I also notice the windows installer not working correctly on this pc.
  2. no, although I am aware of userpasswords2, its not what I saw happen that one day as it asked for a new admin password, and to confirm it, then when I closed it, the admin was a choice on the logon screen. I know you can re-hide the admin acct. too, but I havent felt the need to yet. Its my curse. After I got control of that pc, I cleaned it. Including the run commands cache.
  3. I saw this again at a freinds house. They have only one user and when you boot the pc, it skips the logon screen and goes directly to the only desktop available to them. If I was to need to be the administrator on that computer to do somthing, I would need this same command. Again, this command would both change the password for the admin acct, and make administrator available on the welcome logon screen.
  4. I love what CCleaner does. I recommend it to all my friends. And so far no complaints. Recently I helped a friend reconfigure a xp pro pc from an office for home use. I searched from google and quickly found a run command to reset or change the local root administrator's password in a forum somewhere. I copied and pasted it in to the run, and got a dialog that asked for a new admin password and to confirm it. Well, I was so excited, I forgot to write that command down before I changed that acct from admin to limited and ran CCleaner on it. (I created another admin user acct and disabled the root admin instead) Anyway, Since then, I have spent hours trying to find the same search result for terms like reset admin password and am having no luck. I keep thinking the cache for the run (start menu) is on that pc somewhere. The command itself would be like finding gold at this point. Yes I know, I could just as easily, use other ways to reset the root admin password, but this one trick did it and made it show up on the welcome screen in one simple step. I would like to find out if it really works or did it assign a password to a blank one. Since I used CCleaner on that pc, I thought I might try extending my search for that illusive run (start menu) command here in this forum. Can anyone suggest a way to recover all of those run (start menu) commands I used that day...lol Feel free to post All !) I may not reply to but will read all posts. thanks.
