  1. By any chance are these attachments "winmail.dat"? If your friend is using Outlook as an e-mail client and using Rich Text or HTML format, Outlook attaches this formatting information file. If you use Outlook as an e-mail client, it works in the background and you won't see the attachment but if you're not using Outlook, it appears separately. Ask your friend to send a message in Plain Text and if no attachment appears, that is the explanation.
  2. Which setting are you using for Display Properties > Appearance > Effects > Use the following methods to smooth edges of screen fonts?
  3. RegCompact.NET v2.0 is the last freeware version I have.
  4. Welcome! Ordinary files may be recoverable unless you used Options > Secure file deletion. With regard to index.dat files (e.g., history) see this thread. Also depends on what you mean by "retrievable". There are forensic techniques that could probably get some data even after secure deletion ... but is the CIA really after you ?

    Prefetch

CCleaner's Old Prefetch data option does what its name implies or you can use Options > Custom to clean all Prefetch entries but there's really no point to either. Prefetch is limited to 128 entries and self cleans thereafter.
  6. Sorry, never tried. Except where something is wrong with the OS, this is a myth. It never becomes very big. When the Prefetch folder accumulates 128 entries, it deletes the oldest and retains only the newest 64. (That's why the "Old Prefetch data" option in CCleaner is actually redundant.) If you really don't want Prefetch, it's a simple hack to disable it in the registry. Other builds
  7. 21 GB is small but if you don't have much software, it should be adequate. You shouldn't need a a program to uninstall programs. Use the Windows Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs to uninstall all unwanted programs. Be careful, don't uninstall anything unless you know what it is. If in doubt, post a question here and someone will help you. What's on your D: drive? Is it just a partition on your main hard drive or is it a secondary hard drive? Consider moving data files to it or, if it's just a partition, consider reducing its size and expanding C:.
  8. Welcome!Just to be sure I understand .. b when you say "memory", do you perhaps mean hard drive? If so, how big a hard drive do you have? Have you analyzed what is using it up?
  9. No problem adding Windows Prefetch to Custom Folders. See screenshot. EDIT: ... but why would you want to? Also, if you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, just install the Basic or Slim versions.
  10. Make sure you have either the old v5.7 or v5.82 which was released last week and no longer has the dangerous "first & last 2kB" feature introduced in v5.8.
  11. IE6 with DNSKong & eDexter ... no ads.

    history folder

I understand now ... and no, I can't see the index.dat in History or Temporary Internet Files directly. As you say, CCleaner (and other cleaners) delete them so, once I verified that, I forgot about them. I think the reason that the History index.dat is "ORNERY" is because it is always locked in use by Windows. There are utilities such as Index Dat Spy which allow you to read an index.dat (including History). Some cleaners such as Eusing Window Washer include a viewer.

    history folder

Welcome! I'm not sure what you mean. On any of several WinXP PC's I use, I can see the contents of History, Temporary Internet Fles and Cookies directly with no problem.
  14. Reviews and good advice at ConsumerSearch.
  15. When you delete an index.dat, a blank one is created to replace it. Edit: Note that the deletion/replacement happen when you reboot.

    Registry value

  17. CCleaner lists an application when it detects a registry key indicating that the application is installed, e.g., it lists Windows Media Player if it detects HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player. If CCleaner is listing applications you have uninstalled, it is because the keys were not properly removed (some applications have lousy uninstallers). Have you run Issues to clean the registry? If that hasn't fixed things, you might consider another registry cleaner. If you're sure you know what you're doing, you could manually edit the registry.

    Sign-in screen

If you don't have any e-mail accounts to automatically download into your client (Outlook or other), it's probably harmless. If you experience any difficulties, you can just recreate the key and the two values shown in my screenshot. Subkeys for accounts will automatically be created when you set up your e-mail client (actually the whole UnreadMail key would probably be created). Feel free to PM me if you need any help.
  20. "The page cannot be displayed ... " (in IE) is the built in DNS error message. When the hosts file redirects to 127.0.0.1, it can't find a image to download so defaults to the same error message you would get if the site couldn't be found. That's the default in eDexter (what I meant by "64 byte blank"). Homer probably can do the same.
  21. If you want to avoid that message and (supposedly) speed things up, you can use eDexter by Pyrenean. It acts as a localhost webserver to supply images of your choice in place of those blocked. I use eDexter with a 64 byte blank image because I hate having "The page cannot ..." all over the screen. Homer 1.1 by Funkytoad supposedly does the same.
  22. It's a security patch. From Microsoft FAQs: "I have installed Windows Media Player 11 on my computer. Why am I being offered the Windows Media Player 6.4 security update? While Windows Media Player 11 is not vulnerable, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition will still have Windows Media Player 6.4 installed on the system for backwards compatibility." The same would apply if you have WMP 10.
  23. I've used a Maxtor OneTouch for backup for a couple of years. It came with Retrospect Express HD which is a "light" version of EMC2 Retrospect. It backs up both system (similar to Windows Restore) and data files and lets you selectively restore exactly what you want. I didn't view the tutorial but I assume the current software is at least as good.
  24. She should contact her company's IT support. Since it's XP Pro they should be able to push the necessary files out to her and do the install by remote.
