  2. Hi Good People, I think the method suggested by JDPower is the preferred way to keep it portable. davey
  3. Hello again ohboy, This link can also make it a lot easier to check things out. I bookmaked it as I use it every now and then. Just click on HELP on right side of window. They will offer a free download of ad blocker software but I wouldn't complicate things with downloading software just yet. You can reply NO, Then you will be asked to allow Active-x click on yellow bar to allow it. Then you will be asked to Run a program. It is safe to do so. The report you get will show you alot of info about whats running on your computer. You can expand for more detail. Then you can Print it if you would like. Then click on X on browser window to get out of there. It is a safe site but it seems they don't want to let you go to easily. Try this soon it will save you some work and worry. I am sure others will also reply to your Post. You can trust the Moderators and Power members not to steer you wrong.Avoid links offered on the net for this kind of service without checking it out on safe forums like this one. davey P.S. CORRECTED LINK IS AS FOLLOWS http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/
  4. Hi Ed M, When you use Tools > Startup then select (left click once to High-light) the program you want to delete then click "Delete" that one entry will be gone. The other entries will be OK. Now, if there is still some imbedded McAfee software it may "recreate" the entry at next Reboot. Many security programs do this to keep malicious persons or software at bay. You may still be able to get a copy of that Uninstall software online. Most likely from McAfee. If you can't get it there you might try your computer manufacturer. Just avoid any sites that offer to cure your McAfee "problems". There are security Experts right here on the forum. You will probably be hearing from them. For now chill out and enjoy you computer. Link here and enjoy some very beneficial reading.Click on the other buttons there also. http://internetrotsyourbrain.com/rridgely/freesoftware.htm davey

    Registry Issues

Hi AliceZ, From reading your Posts ,I can tell you are a very conscientious PC user and you want to keep your computer in "good working" condition. You love to use it and enjoy the pleasures and benefits it brings to you and your husband. When it comes to Registry cleaning,I would suggest that you not even worry about doing it.Your use of the computer is like millions of other happy users.Registry cleaning is more for experienced "heavy" users. From what I have learned over the last couple of months of use is that for users like you it is better to just leave the Registry alone. Once you get more experienced maybe but the problems and worry involved are not worth the benefit that most users "think" they will get. The best for you is to keep using the Cleaner as needed and also defragment your disk drive once a month at the most. Your computer is for your enjoyment. The first Cleaning is the scariest because you never realized what junk was building up. I am speaking to you like a brother. Best Wishes Sincerely, davey
  6. Yes, I understand what you are saying.I personally don't know exactly which all the ones they do or don't do. I have been surprized that sometimes that option makes a difffernce on some files that I wouldn't consider Windows temp files. I'll leave it up to someone with more historical knowledge of CCleaner.I am sure every file has been considered by the development team at one point or the other.Seems like one users junk file is another users treasure file etc. You still have the option to Include or Exclude what you want cleaned on a regular basis. As regrds reference to version v1.14.072,that is when the time delay was changed from 10 days to 48 hrs. davey
  7. Hello Quidsane, Some users seem to get a little flustered because the description doesn't seem to make sense. Maybe we can get the description changed and a little more clarification from the development team. There is an option box labeled Only delete Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours. It is located at OPTIONS > Advanced. Try running with that box unchecked. Check the file immediately after running CCleaner. If something is still there, then Reboot. Please fill us in as to to what happens and when. Good Luck, davey Below is a list of changes for version v1.14.072.The description seems to make a little more sense. v1.14.072 - Added Opera cache cleaning. - Added Clipboard cleaning. - Improved Cookie cleaning. - Improved IE Cache cleaning. - Removed Advanced Cache Delete. - Reduced Temp file delete delay to 48 hours. - Added Advanced section to Windows cleaner. - Added Paint Shop Pro 9.0 cleaner. - Remembers if application is maximized on closing. - Tweaked Firefox detection for non-English systems. - Updated System Spec routines. - Tweaked interface colours and styles.
  8. Hello andrea0769, If you restored to a point prior to using CCleaner, then you should not Merge any backups from the Registry clean. This may be causing it some problems. Good Luck, davey
  9. Hello lbrazzi, Welcome to our forum. You have come to safe place to get an answer. I too had to remove loads of AOL files and folders. Just wanted to warn you to stay away from those websites that say they will take care of your AOL "problems". I wasn't a member of the forum when I was dealing with uninstalling AOL.Wish I had been.I am sure I would have received valuable advice. It just took time.No rush. Members here will give you their best advice. Good Luck, davey
  10. Hi YoKenny, You are correct about Win98 SE age.But some folks "got to run what they brung". Prior to suggesting it, I did check out Andavari's link to MS and it applies to Win98 SE also. Still not sure if it will help his display problem. It would be nice to see other Win98 SE users respond. davey
  11. Hello Ed M, Welcome to the forum.A great forum. What is the name and version of that anti-virus software. Someone here in the forum can probably supply you with advice on how to get rid of it. Many users, many problems and many experienced solutions. Good Luck, davey
  12. Right.Color Scheme understood. Are you using the latest version v.2.04 now? Are you seeing the new features on the analyze window?. Most important you read the latest Guide. So many new features and options. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=1504 davey Andavari's Post may help also. Not sure but always good to keep MS software up-to-date. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=5739
  13. Just a thought.Did you do any other maintenance, cleaning, installing, uninstalling or deleting? If so a Reboot might do the trick. I know simple but had to ask. Good Luck, davey The fact that you say the progress bar is blue is interesting? Mine has always been "green". In the latest version you also want to check the boxes at OPTIONS > Advanced for detailed log for IE and FIREFOX/MOZILLA.
  14. Hello ohboy, Welcome to the forum. The Startup feature shows a list of programs that will automatically start every time you re-boot your system. The featue allows you to remove any you do not want. You are correct in your questioning which ones to keep. Some are put there by some software you downloaded and then decided not to use. Those that are left behind sometimes cause problems and slow down the start-up process. Others, you may try to delete but the imbedded software puts them back. Many software and hardware companies will put these in to make their product "start-up" faster in your view than some competitors product. If you are satisfied with the speed of your statup then don't worry about them. But,if not or you don't have enough RAM to handle all these programs then you need to do some research. You can strart at this link. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ You will need the program name to search in their database (i.e. systray.exe ). Then you can read and decide what to do. There are other sites available. You can Google on any program name and find them.Just stay away from the sites that make it sound like you have a serious problem or "virus" or whatever. The Piriform forums are a safe place to get advice.IF SOFTWARE RELATED THEN SOFTWARE FORUM. HARDWARE FORUM ETC. Good Luck, davey
  15. Hello Anthony A, Been to any of the Tweak Sites lately? I think it was just yesterday I was reading about some scrpit or other to do just what is occuring to you.Have to look in my history and see where I visited. davey It's ironic I can't seem to be able to keep my wallpaper. You've got a house full.

    The Kiss.

Yes,they are amazing creatures. They deserve all the respect, hugs, and kisses they can get. The same must be said for the fireman!!! Yes,they are amazing creatures. They deserve all the respect, hugs, and kisses they can get. Let's do them a big favor and put new batteries in all our detectors. If they don't need batteries then at least test them. P.S. Every fireman, dog owner, animal lover and their friends are probably hitting that Image Host site hard.It may be easier to connect later.
  17. Hello mobfant, If your friend uses ERUNT I would try that Recovery option first. Unfortunately a "malicious" person or software may have done the damage before you ever got involved. Good Luck, davey
  18. Hi Eli, I think it may help if you review the contents of the winapp.ini file at C:\Program Files\CCleaner. This will help answer some of your questions. Also this link may help if there are other areas you might want to clean. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=1110 davey P.S. You might want to run the Cleaner function and just use the Analyze button. You should also check off the options and uncheck the options to get an idea what each is going to clean .I would also check the boxes at Options > Advanced to show the detailed logs of IE and Firefox/Mozilla.Also review the Cookies list at Options > Cookies.
  19. Hello niallsnan, Welcome to a great forum. Click on this link and follow the instructions there. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=12840 Good Luck, davey P.S. Are you using the latest version available at this link? Defraggler v1.01.050 BETA http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=14185
  20. Hello again, I don't have years of experience using the PC but I thought to find some more information for you. Please note what is said in the second paragraph. You don't want any other programs auto starting, auto updates coming through the INTERNET,scheduled update or security scans. etc. If you have already shut down the problem computer I would wait for some more experienced users advice also. There are many of them on this forum. You just have to be patient and wait for them to see your Post. If you must restart, only do it in SAFE MODE to avoid any unnecessary processes being initiated. davey
  21. Hi Fauzdaar80, Please take your time!!! Everything you do now affects whether or not you can successfully recover your brother's MOST CRUCIAL DATA. Remember whatever you do on that computer can possibly overwrite some of that data. Use another computer to communicate with us. Once you do get RECUVA working PLEASE REMEMBER to recover it to another drive so you don't accidentally overwrite some of the data you are trying to recover. Good Luck and don't rush things."try to stay calm"( HAZLENUT"S MOTTO.) davey
  22. Hello DasFox, Have you tried the Include feature as listed under OPTIONS > INCLUDE ? You will also have to specify what overwrite option you want to use for Secure Deletion. This is in OPTIONS > SETTINGS. I and many others would also be interested how this works out for you. Could you also keep track of how long the Cleaning runs take and what overwrite option you used? Good Luck, davey P.S. You will also want to use Piriform's RECUVA program to prove to yourself that everything is working as anticipated. RECUVA itself now has the option to Overwrite files that it has found. There have been reported "bugs" in the Overwrite feature but I am sure that will be corrected soon. The current version is RECUVA v1.10.223 at http://www.recuva.com/
  23. Hi tinyspirit, I found some information on sprtcmd.exe for you. Do you use TalkTalk? I am not sure what that is but maybe you do. The info is at this link. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/TalkTalk-19117.html Best Wishes, davey
  24. Hi stewy, Looks like now is the time to tell you about ERUNT and NTREGOPT. You may have already seen discussions about these in the forum. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=14264&st=0 Below is the link to the authors website. For now you can use Windows and make a "restore point". Then try the MS fix. You can also try the pictures software Hazel has suggested. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm davey
  25. Hello tinyspirit, You may reset your Registry if you want. You do not have to reset your Registry if you don't want to do that. You can Uninstall CCleaner at any time. Good Luck, davey
