  1. Very nice. Thank you.
  2. Hi, Tommyk I have the avg free products: Antivirus, Antispyware, and Rootkit detector. Also active are Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, and Adaware, and there are a couple of tons of others which are kept inactive. You didn't mention a firewall, do you have one? I have just switched to Comodo free firewall, I really like it, but would be interested in others' opinions of it.
  3. Thanks, JD. NTREGOPT does not require a reboot to run. After it has run, say, in Powershadow or Returnil, you can see what it has done; see if you want to keep the changes, etc. For example, mine only compacted the reg about .01%, and being the registry scaredy-cat that I am, I just elected to leave it as-is after rebooting out of powershadow. If I had wanted the reg compacting to be permanent, I would have re-run it normally and kept the changes. Ergo, the suggestion that it can be tested and run in PS or Returnil. Was intrigued by the fact that after compacting, my reg was a tiny bit bigger than before. Unless I read that wrong?
  4. I misspoke, meant to say that HDTune monitors only the HD. Thank you for correcting that, JD. Here is a screenshot of the whole batch of them running. They don't seem to agree on much. Are some of the readings wrong?
  5. Sorry to bring up an old topic, but just just found out some things. Free Registry Defrag and NTREGOPT do not require a reboot, so can be tested and run in PowerShadow or Returnil. Also, got an odd message from free registry defrag: "The current registry size is 43,460kb, the estimated registry size after compacting will be 43.464kb. You will save (4)kb (9882575%) in registry size after compacting. "
  6. Problem arises with new members. . .they might not know how to interpret the designations. Members here are very careful, very responsible, but that is not so everywhere. Craigathus, I find this a very interesting topic, social checks and balances on an internet forum, peer pressure, . . . lots of interesting aspects to think about.
  7. I agree. FYI, I used to defrag really often, weekly or oftener, in an effort to make the computer run faster. Nowadays I pretty much follow the advice of the OEM defragger, if it says no need to defrag, I don't. Frequent defragging didn't speed up much, infrequent defragging doesn't seem to hurt.
  8. Hi, Kaspin. This one claims to recover from a drive that has been quick formatted, I have used it but not for that, but here it is: PC INSPECTOR? File Recovery 4.x from http://www.pcinspector.de/ This one is a recovery app, also free. . .not sure about its effectiveness on a damaged or reformatted drive: Avira UnErase Personal from http://www.avira.com/en/products/avira_unerase.html Good luck.
  9. I'm gonna go out and buy another copy of XP before they take it off the shelves. Computers are getting better, faster, cheaper; OS packages are getting worse and more expensive. Regardless of the next great leap forward ?? from MS, I can get a good computer and put in my own OS. Putting away the soapbox now.

    Woodworking?

Sounds like a cool idea. First things came to my mind were: 1. Woods warp, expand, contract. Even when cured, they still move around. 2. Some woods, cedar, for example, contain oils that will adversly affect metals. 3. Vibrations from the fan, DVD drive, etc. might affect the grip of the screws. Not a factor with a metal case, they use lock washers. I hope you can make it work. . .post a picture. . .
  11. Great news. Looking forward to it. Thank you.
  12. Give System Information for Windows, SIW, a try. It finds the temps for both processor cores and the HD, whereas HDTune and SpeedFan only find the HD. SIW is at http://www.gtopala.com/
  13. Just uninstalled Antivir free, installed AVG free, going to give it a try. Many false positives from Antivir. Maybe it was the way I had it configured, but if another program moved, opened or just touched one of the false positives, such as the one associated w/ CCleaner, Antivir would stop everything 'till I told it to ignore the false positive. So I had to babysit it while it ran. FYI.
  14. Please post a hijackthis log. . .
  15. Thanks, Dennis. . .gonna be a while on that one.

    Freeware!

Thanks, BrownSugar. Got'em. Now to figure'em out.
  17. If you do that too fast, I just found, it makes you woozy. Hi, Dolly. Welcome.
  18. Hi Dennis. You probably found these, but: http://www.itamer.com/wowexeexe/6/feed/ http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/wowexec.exe.html On my system (apparently bug free) in c:\windows\system32 and in dllcache I have 1. wow32.dll 2. wowdeb.exe 3. wowexec.exe 4. wowfax.dll 5. wowfaxui.dll
  19. Hazelnut, you're the best.

    Where?

Hi, Bob11. See if these articles help: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question578.htm and http://www.geekgirls.com/windows_recycle_bin.htm Make a long story short, a deleted file isn't gone, windows just tells itself that the deleted file's space is empty and available . Sooner or later that space, which windows thinks is empty, will get written into again. Then the file is pretty much gone. Forensic guys might be able to get it back, but not us ordinary mortals. Recuva finds those files that windows has marked as deleted and gets them back. If they have been overwritten, they won't work. Good question.
