  1. Checkpoint software is getting into the virtualization business, I guess. A beta product called "ZoneAlarm ForceField" is available at: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/forcefield_x/index.html I just installed it using powershadow and sandboxie. It wouldn't install within the sandbox, but did install under powershadow. No reboot is necessary for installation, but reboot is necessary to uninstall it. SpywareGuard (of all things ) caught the BHO being installed. I presume the BHO is OK, its part of the install. ??? Spybot S&D flagged 3 or 4 registry changes. IE7 got hung, wouldn't link to this forum. Comodo firewall went berserk, firing off warnings, but that would settle down soon enough. Uninstaller said that there were some files left in a virtual partition (I think) which would be deleted on restart. Powershadow wiped it all out on reboot. ZoneAlarm has a great reputation, which is why I tried it. Now will wait for a later version.
  2. Or a tune up run toward an even larger purpose...
  3. Yep, belt + suspenders + elastic + velcro. . .at some point, enough already. I'm still using spybot 1.4, so Spywareblaster is no overlap, but if the spybot 1.5 keeps all the old hosts files, as Andavari pointed out elswhere in this forum, I may have to make a change soon. Thanks for mentioning it.
  4. As you go through the download process, it says all over the place that it is a full version??? Don't know, tho. edit: After installing the registation key, it says it is ver. 4.41. edit #2: My manners are slipping. Thank you, Hazelnut, for the link.
  5. Would suggest continuing to use SpywareBlaster, it is a passive app, just sits there till it is needed.

    Sandboxie

I agree and am forever in your debt, Humpty, for putting me onto Sandboxie. One small difference, though, I seem to notice a small slowdown after a long time on the net. Might just be my imagination. I use a combination of Powershadow and Sandboxie.
  7. Thanks for the info. Very useful. Will soon reformat and reinstall, it sure is nice to know this.
  8. Hope you saw the user comments, they say that some nasties come with these 2 apps. True or false? edit: Well, true or false, AVG gives a hit on the Ghost keylogger, moved it to the vault. Also gave a hit on the KGB keylogger, but didn't hit when I scanned again. ?? Don't know why, but that's enough for me. Gonna trash'em.
  9. I just installed and ran ver 1.41.544 on a wxp up to date machine, worked as advertised, and so did ver 2.500. Ver 2.500 stalled for a bit at about 50 percent scan, but then finished pretty fast. I am running an old version of CCleaner, not because of bugs, just too lazy to install the new one.
  10. Hi meland. I just installed and ran CCleaner ver 1.41.544, when I selected an issue I got the backup message Andavari showed. Will Now try it with ver 2.00.500 final. Back in a minute. Back now. Just installed and ran 2.00.500. Got the backup message, fixed the issue, registry backup was made OK. Also tried it with "obsolete software", same thing...got the option window I am running wxp sp2 up to date. Don't know what to tell you except maybe reinstall CCleaner. Maybe one of the members can suggest something for me to try here, a tweak to try to duplicate what you're getting.
  11. From a Wall Street Journal article: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB1190...ODAxNzg1Wj.html I have downloaded it, 137 MB , have not yet booted it up, will report if and when. It's called IBM Lotus Symphony. Download is available at: http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.jspa Be warned, they ask a lot of questions to register, downright nosy in fact, and there are about 25 pages of EULAS. edit: The download process looks and feels different for this site, too.
  12. Hi Benton, welcome. Thanks for the tip.

    Defraggler

Defraggler is about the niftiest name I ever heard for an app. Very apt. Thank you. Another super program from Piriform team. Will go get it.
  14. Nor do I. Have it stopped using Comodo Firewall, but it sure does try.
  15. Thanks, RRidgely. Will pass it on. Going from office 97 to office 2003 was like learning a whole new program, not worth the trouble for me. But I am sure college age family members will be interested in this offer.
  16. Which player are you using, Humpty? I know nothing at all about DRM stuff, never had the need to go beyond good ole WMP 10.
  17. Thanks, Dennis. Tried GOM in the sandbox, then dropped it. Different reasons, just didn't need it. Thanks, lotse, will try it.
  18. Have 2 cents to add. Well, maybe worth 2 cents. . . I have Returnil and Powershadow, both free, installed. Mostly use Powershadow, because it protects the whole hard drive. Returnil might do that also, but I think it just protects C: drive, and I want to protect D: drive, the recovery partition, also. Good thing about Sandboxie is that it lets me see what has changed since it started. What got installed, where it went, etc. There are two screenshots attached to this post. After the first one, I installed an app called "iIProcess Viewer" sandboxed, and took another screenshot. The changes made are pretty easy to see. The changes will be gone after a reboot because Powershadow is running, but Sandboxie lets me see what was changed. I don't know where the files and folders are processed when PS or Returnil are active. If you are really careful (paranoid? ) about having leftover stuff floating around somewhere on your hard drive, you can write a .bat file to securely delete the sandbox BEFORE you shut down windows. Edit: I use Sandboxie ver 2.86, 'cause I have not yet got the .bat file to work for the new version. Hazelnut and Dennis know a lot more about this issue than I do, so I would defer to their judgement if they disagree. first sandbox: second sandbox:
  19. Yep, I know that one. . .
  20. Right now I do that by wiping the free space on the HD, but it is a slow business. I have used 2 free utilities, sdelete and eraser, and know them to work OK. I like sdelete better because it renames the files after it wipes them; all the characters in the names end up as Z. I don't know if the other 2 do that or not. sdelete (free) has a free space wipe feature: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...sk/SDelete.mspx Eraser (free) has a feature to wipe free space. Be careful. Use only the latest version: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ A third utility, Paragon Hard Disk manager (still free, I think) also has such an option. Frankly, paragon is not something I would install if I only wanted to wipe the free space on a hard drive. I haven't used it for that yet. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/partitionmanager/index Recuva is a great program, and I look forward to a release which incorporates a secure deletion option.
