  1. Early on, CA was just plain free. It was fast and thorough. I went ahead and downloaded this recent offering. Probably won't use it just yet, but is good to have. Spoken...well, typed... like a true "download-a-holic", huh?
  2. Must agree, better safe than sorry. I have some irreplaceable applications stored on USB drives.
  3. Good one Andavari. CCleaner = CrumbCleaner?, maybe a new feature?
  4. Not sure, but I bet they would keep xp if it was obvious to the financial analysts that it would pay to do so. Whaddaya think?
  5. Same here. Nag screen lasts 5 seconds on mine, it takes me that long to figure out what I am supposed to be doing anyway, so it isn't a big issue. I occasionally forget that it was on, requires a "do over", but as Hazelnut said, a small price to pay.
  6. Thanks, YoKenny, got it.
  7. I like the automotive anology developed in this thread: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=18599 The car manufacturers (and herein unnamed OS publishers??) work off the notion that adding trinkets and glitz will sell cars (and OSs?). In the past that seems to have worked. Well, at some point superflous trinkets become a liability. For example, the electronic systems in many modern cars. They warn you if a taillight is going out. They warn you if a door is open (apparently many people cannot tell). Your window rolls down automatically, so you don't have to hold the down button, thus saving a lot of energy. On the mechanical end, there are cables, wires, or levers to open the hood, trunk, hatchback, etc. There are little pockets stuck all over the cabin, into which children can put half an ice cream cone. There are abundant cup holders. All this stuff breaks down after a while. If you keep a car or an OS as long as I do, it breaks down repeatedly. For my money, give me hand cranked windows, simple wiring, and a stable OS. Lets all start by reinstalling the last stable version of Windows (there must be one)....of getting a MAC.
  8. I'm going over to CT's thread.

    A Sad Day...

Very sorry for you, LuLu. My prayers are with you.
  10. Cute. Have seen it once or twice, laugh every time. Ironically sung to the tune of "The Times They Are A'Changin'", a 60s protest song (for the wee bairns on here who may not know).
  11. Hi phonymouse. I am sorry you are having trouble. Andavari suggested that the problem is not related to CCleaner, and I have to concur. I just did an experiment: ----> Don't try this at home...professional driver on a closed track...DANGER Will Robinson! <---- Seriously, I am the worst registry 'fraidy cat I know, and wouldn't have done it unless I had a virtualization app running. You should never add or remove anything from the registry unless you know exactly what it is. 1. Ran CCleaner v. 2.11.636 registry cleanup option. Selected everything (I too had a bunch of entries starting with "I"). 2. Fixed everything, a bunch of stuff, more than a screen full. First time I have ever done this, so lots of junk. 3. Followed the prompt to back up the registry. 4. Cannot reboot, (edit: because of the virtualization app running changes would be lost anyway), but tried most all of my applications, they worked. 5. Restored the deleted registry items, scanned for issues again and they're all back. 6. Everything still works. Soooo, problem probably did not arise from CCleaner.
  12. Hi TerenceH. If you can give some specifics, like what OS and what VM? What is cleaned more than you expected to be? Humpty and hazelnut are well versed in VM use. I am familiar a little bit but don't have CCleaner on any VM. Will install it and check if you tell me what to look for. In general, I have never had anything escape from VMWare server, nor to affect the host machine from within the VM. It can happen but has not happened to me.
  13. Did you ever find out what was causing the problem?

    Ninja Cat

Found this interesting and cute...kitty stalking photographer. Freezes, then moves, then freezes... Look at kitty's eye pupils when he gets close...he is concentrating. Its not at all scary but if cats scare you don't go. http://www.break.com/index/ninja-cat.html

    Acronis

Now there's the kind of deal I can understand. Actually did buy it, installed it on a vm and used most all of the features. It worked well. Runs light enough. System backup and restore worked well, file backups worked well, DiskKeeper10 partitioning worked well. Haven't put it on the "real" computer yet. Soon... Acronis has gotten good reports for years, and the name makes it worth the price, especially if you have limited time to experiment. Thanks for the offer, Chris, and for the link, Chronos55.

    Acronis

Thank you for that link. Looks like a good deal. Wonder what it means "Type: function limited demo " on the offer page? Have you tried it yet?
  17. You gotta back off on that coffee a little, AA. Kaybee, sorry you are having trouble. I actually did visit one of the offices, sort of. I installed norton's free trial on a VM (VM runs WXP pro, sp2.), and got an error, so asked the online chat helper try to fix it. Very nice, helpful person, actually called me on the phone. Got the trial to work, finally. You have to give them remote control of your computer. I WOULDN"T HAVE DONE IT except that I had Returnil active. I installed and uninstalled 3 times altogether. Took 2, 3 hours. Nothing crashed. Lotsa reg entries left after the uninstall completes. The attached pictures show a bit about the remote chat assistance Norton uses. Not very informative, but it suggests that there may be some other problem not related to the Norton installation. You might try going back to a restore point earlier than the one you selected for the first try. Also, did you try DennisD's suggestion to reinstall and then uninstall? Also, the DeCrapifier just seems to use Nortons Own uninstaller.
  18. OK, first impression: "Cheeeze-o-petes, where's all my stuff?" Worked OK. Runs a little heavier in a virtual machine than does IE. This scr.shot is in a vm with 2400 mb available ram. Both Chrome and IE open, both have 1 tab up. Am I reading it right that Chrome is using about twice as much ram as IE? Also, google update phones home when the vm is restarted? edit: Well OK, the miserable thing had 2 tabs open...who knew...still about the same or a bit heavier that IE. picture:
  19. Me too, didn't know any better, got a pm from someone I never heard of and very soon the post just disappeared.
  20. Go see, might help? http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17564
  21. Wonder how difficult it is to remove the removal tool? edit: Well, OK, I admit it, I enjoy "Norton-Bashing" as much as the next person. But it IS a security app, and should not be easily modified. How's that for fair and balanced?
  22. Their "more powerful JavaScript engine" is called V8. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/fre...on-browser.html

    HWMON

OK. Here goes. If the computer flies across the room I guess that is set too fast? edit: By golly it worked! Fan speed kicked up dramatically when some heavy apps started running. Temperatures for the CPU cores dropped about 10 deg. C.
  24. Looks interesting. Thanks Eli. Have to try it, but later.
