  1. Hi, Optical10. Try unlocker (not the same as the ones you listed): http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
  2. Great. Unlocker is also a heavy hitter, as ishan_rulz pointed out. I have used v. 1.8.7 on WXP home for a long time, and it works OK. CCleaner is good at removing remnants if you need that.
  3. Did you get it gouged out of there yet?
  4. Good Grief! Go lookie here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...mp;#entry126929 Then just burn the hard drive, pound the ashes with a wooden mallet, and soak'em in battery acid.
  5. Hi, xerowest. Not sure eggzakly what you're trying to remove. A driver, or a program in add/remove, or both? If you had software that locked itself onto your computer against your wishes, maybe you should post in the spyware hell forum: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showforum=12. Be sure to read what to do before you post.
  6. OK. Comodo firewall 2.4.19 is running here at 9,792k with a peak of 9,384k. Will try Outpost, probably lighter in the long run. Thanks again. edit: for what its worth. Outpost 6.5 running here on a VM with 1300 mb available ram is using 3,568k, peak at startup was 23,788k. No glitches. Passed the GRC Shields UP test. http://www.grc.com/default.htm, and the firewall test at http://www.auditmypc.com/. So, looks like a good'un.
  7. Thank you for the notice. Is it light on system resources?
  8. Just read an email describing a class action lawsuit settlement by Symantec/Norton. Its true as far as I can tell. Seems that some norton purchasers in the USA are entitled to a $15.00 coupon or a huge $2.50 cash settlement. Links on Symantec site: http://www.symantec.com/about/profile/policies/legal.jsp has a link to the "Heverly-Norton Case ": http://www.heverly-nortoncase.com/ Hope this is OK to post. If not, sincere apologies, and just zap it right out of the aether.
  9. Have used free VMWare server 1.06 and 1.08. Ver. 2x was just too much trouble. I like VMware. It does slow you down, but actually not bad. Once it is up and running, its pretty fast. Suggest making a batch file to start and stop the required services so they only run when you need'em. Cannot use MS virtual machine, it requires WXP pro for the host OS, I have WXP home. Some say pro isn't required, but MS VM would not install here. Talk about security: a sandbox running in a virtual machine on a host machine running returnil. I think Humpty first mentioned something like that a while back.
  10. ver 1.51 still triggers A-Squared but not mbam, super, nor avast. Never used because it used to trigger everything you scanned it with. Glad to know its OK.
  11. Thanks very much. Lots of info to digest. Will post back anything useful. Remote Desktop is installed, will sure try it. Also UltraVNC.
  12. AVG for a long time, then to Avast on one machine, Avira on another. Avast seems to run a little heavier. Avira was just today, and found 2 items that AVG had missed. Avast on a relative's machine found some items that McAfee had missed. Rridgely's advice in post #4 here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=10098&hl= worked for xp home to shut off the nag screen.
  13. Very handy. Used the standalone version. Very quick. Thanks, DennisD.
  14. Need a little advice, here. Actually a lot of advice, am in way over my head. I want to access remote computers, not on a network. Not for money nor for hackery (is that a word?) but to help friends and realtives. Have searched the forum. There is already some good info here but it is maybe dated. Have read about Crossloop: http://www.crossloop.com/ipage.htm?id=download; ZOLVED: http://www.zolved.com/remote_control/about TeamViewer: http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx TightVNC: http://www.tightvnc.com/ UltraVNC: http://www.uvnc.com/ Anyone have actual experience with any of the freeware apps? I try out whatever you guys recommend first, so as to save time. Thanks a million.
  15. Hi, abu afa. Sorry you're having troubles. Doesn't sound like the operating system generated the warning if "She already had XP Pro SP3" (for more than about 30 days), but if the OS did give the warning, it might be because of newly installed hardware or a BIOS change. Some info at: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457054.aspx The Microsoft phone guys are usually pretty helpful if a product reactivation is required for an os.
  16. Good for you. You deserve it. Anyone who is working to improve internet privacy deserves all the credit they get. Also many thanks to Hazelnut for passing it on.
  17. A current example. I have A-Squared full version and Avast! antivirus. Both well reviewed and good at what they do. Noticed a while back the Avast! "simple user interface" screen wouldn't come on until the second time I started the scanner. But, process explorer showed that the avast scanner was running, flat out, twice. And there were other odd symptoms. Eventually, the second scan would produce results, ie: find the EICAR test virus. Being a not-very-tekkie, I had to experiment quite a bit, and eventually discovered that if I temporarily disabled A-Squared, the Avast! scanner ran normally. Well, who knew? I figured I had contracted some whiz-bang new virus. But, as for learning to tell the difference, most people seem to just want to turn their computers on, use them, and turn them off. That's OK, probably a time limitation, but it makes them easy prey for net scoundrels. So what to do?
  18. Work OK together here. Win XP home 32 bit. Have had both for years, never a conflict. Also use Spywareguard. I just changed my home page, and both Spywareguard and SAS caught the change and required confirmation. No warning from Spywareblaster, not sure why. Spywareguard is not passive, and is said to conflict with Spybot's TeaTimer. I think it runs a bit heavy, and other members here maintain that it is obsolete.
  19. Sort of. Not related to any sort of defragging, tho. Sometimes WXP sp3 just fails to recognize my 500 gb usb external drive when the computer boots up. When that happens, properties show it to be RAW, it is actually NTFS. When that happens, I have to use the "safely remove" procedure, then unplug the USB and the power cable, wait till it stops, then plug everything back in. So far it has come back OK every time, but I have it backed up. Back up for the back up. I too would be interested if anyone knows why that happens. I don't use Defraggler, just the WXP defragger. But I have used it, and also JKDefrag, and those did not cause the problem.
  20. I just now installed and scanned CCleaner v2.16.830. No alert from a s-squared, MBAM, avast, or SuperantiSpyware.
  21. Hi, Lyle. You are wise to avoid fixing things unless you really understand them. For a tutorial about CCleaner, start at: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20293 To look up individual file extensions, try: http://filext.com/file-extension/ For an alphabetical list, try: http://filext.com/file-extension/ If your computer has become really slow, you might consider posting in "Spyware Hell", just to see if you have malaware problems.
  22. If you paid w/ a credit card you may have an option to get your money back by filing a complaint through the card company.
  23. Happy Birthday, YoKenny. The guy, top left, with the purple cap is Andavari. Don't know the others.
  24. Hi, Xion44. I use WXP home 32 bit, so cannot say about vista. But . . . Sdelete, from sysinternals, is very solid with wxp. Very light installation and operation. I use it. It says it works w/ wxp and higher. here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897443.aspx Eraser is good with WXP, I use v. 5.84. Later versions may have problems, and there is no indication that older versions work with vista. This post by Hazelnut has a link to another forum where the problems are described. Much good information. here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...5&hl=eraser eraser new ver: http://eraser.heidi.ie/ eraser FAQ: http://heidi.ie/eraser/faq.php eraser old ver: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=37015 and: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ackage_id=29270 Hope this helps. If you can, post what you work out.
  25. Good choice, Yokenny, I agree with 1984 except about the macaroni and cheese. M&C has saved the lives of millions and millions of graduate students. It and peanut butter deserve a place in the food groups.
