  3. Windows Defender gets mixed, generally negative, reviews, it apparently misses a lot of stuff...that is just what I read. Some of the freeware apps appear to do the job better. I use these apps, all are free unless you choose to donate; none are "hogs". Active protection category: AVG Antivirus http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ AVG Antispyware (active?, don't know, the trial period has expired) from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-...pyware/us/frt/0 SpyBot S&D...ver 1.5 runs slower than ver 1.4, but it has more features. The Tea Timer in 1.5 takes a lot of memory, but is worth it, IMHO. Both versions are available at FileHippo: from http://filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/ SpyWareBlaster SpyWareGuard, the oldest spyware app in the known universe. Uses quite a bit of memory. Never updates. Doesn't seem to do much (actually does). I don't recommend it, but do use it. Ya gotta love it. Comodo Firewall, ver 2.4 I think, not ver 3, couldn't get that to work although others on this forum had better luck. ----------------------------------------- Passive, or on demand only category: AdAware XoftSpySE from http://www.paretologic.com/xoftspy/se/newlp/xray/?uid=bsxh5 SuperAntiSpyware. Trial period expired, so not active now. -------------------------------------------------- Rootkit finders, on demand only: AVG Antirootkit F-Secure Blacklight IceSword Rootkit Revealer from Sysinternals Rootkit Buster from Trend Micro. Sophos AntiRootkit Rootkit Unhooker from http://antirootkit.com/software/RootKit-Unhooker.htm but you probably should get the current version quickly, Microsoft bought'em: read here: http://www.antirootkit.com/blog/2007/12/23...f-to-microsoft/ --------------------------------------- Virtualization, sort of: Sandboxie Returnil Powershadow...no longer free
  4. Look forward to visiting on your forum, and seeing you here, too. edit: Also must say, your posts early on made me decide to keep coming back here, and so get to know many very nice people. Thank you.

    DivX Pro

CTskilfreak, sorry for the slow answer. I installed DivX in the sandbox, and didn't like all the changes that showed up there...too much for me...because the player and the compressor just are not valuable enough to me to justify making that much change to my system. Just my personal opinion.

    DivX Pro

Thanks for the link, Humpty. Downloaded and installed it shielded by powershadow and sandboxie, got the activation number as promised in email. I seem to remember that DivX used to be a much sought after codec / player app, but now there are several others which do the same thing. Don't use them much, so cannot comment on the relative quality. This installation made a ton of changes to the system.
  7. Barely made it, huh? Good one, Humpty.

  9. Good for you. Have fun, learn a lot.
  10. SafeSpace was mentioned here before: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...mp;hl=safespace I just installed it and ran it for a little while. -Seemed to me slower than sandboxie, and a bit less intuitive. -Comodo firewall says it sets a lot of hooks into applications, probably required by how it works. -Was a problem uninstalling it, it just didn't want to go. -Uninstaller left quite a bit, reinstalled, tried again, still left quite a bit. -Uninstaller hung up. -System restore hung for the first time ever. Just stopped. -Went into safe mode and used system restore, OK now. SafeSpace has reallly great potential, I'm going to keep watching it.

    99% bug

Works OK here, little hesitation at 99%, but then it finishes. The original debug log is about 52,000 Kb. If the small edited version below is unhelpful, let me know how to attach the big one and I will. and

    Sandboxie

Using the latest version of CCleaner to delete the sandbox left some files and folders still in the sandbox. Many files and folders were deleted and apparently overwritten; the 2 files in the picture below are all that is left in any of the folders, and they are not usable. So it appears that CCleaner does securely delete the sandbox, but sometimes does not complete the job. That is, some folders and 2 files were left. Also, the files recovered after deletion were also overwritten, at least the ones I checked. Several of the eraser type programs I have will not empty the sandbox either. I would not disparage CCleaner at all for this, it is a great program. Leftovers:

    Sandboxie

Hi Humpty. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. -was running an old version of CCleaner. Installed v2.03.532. -added the path to sandbox using "options-Include": C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Sandbox\*.* -ticked the "Advanced > Custom..." box in the CCleaner gui. -turned off internet explorer and sandboxie control. Nothing sandboxed. -ran CCleaner. -many files were removed, but not all. -only thing that may have affected the job is that I was in powershadow, but I don't think that made the difference. -What is left is shown below. It is mostly the content.IE5 folder, but most have been overwritten and renamed. Thanks again for the help. I will try the new version of CCleaner when I reboot, and if that makes a difference I'll post it.
  14. Hi, alphanalyst. I just did a quick scan of the CCleaner discussion forum, and it seems that CCleaner is designed to work on certain predesignated folders on the drive containing the operating system into which it (CCleaner) is installed. In fact, the moderators suggest that you don't use it to clean external drives, even if you can. Ccleaners purpose is to remove junk which builds up within windows over time (I think). So you didn't miss anything, it just isn't in the instructions because it isn't a function of the application. If I have missed something here, someone will ring in and explain it more thoroughly.

    Sandboxie

Hi, Humpty. Don't know. Never tried, will see about that. Back in a minute. edit: Tried adding the "DefaultBox" as a custom folder to clean, didn't work. ?? Not going to try to edit the winapp.ini. The reason Eraser doesn't work sometimes, I think, is because of the attributes of the temporary internet files. I do know that the bat file below works with Sandboxie v2.86 and v3.02, but not with v3.00. Don't know about v3.20, haven't installed it yet. You have to have Sdelete from sysinternals copied into c:\windows\system32. As you know, you have to make sure the file paths are correct. Changing the number after sdelete/p changes the number of times the file is overwritten (and makes the process take longer). If you want to try it, save it as a .bat file I know I don't have to tell you this, Humpty, but I'm gonna say it anyway. Be Careful. DOS does what you tell it to, not what you want it to. Bat files make me nervous, I am always afraid an inexperienced person will wipe something out unintentionally. edit 2: If you try it, let me know if it works or not. Thanks @echo off rem modified 20071130 to include warning cd C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\APPLIC~1\Sandbox\DefaultBox\user\current\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1 echo ------ echo This will securely delete your sandbox. echo OK? pause @echo on attrib -h -r -s -a content.ie5 sdelete/p 1 /s content.ie5 cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a tempor~1 sdelete/p 1 /s tempor~1 cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a locals~1 sdelete/p 1 /s locals~1 cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a current sdelete/p 1 /s current cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a user sdelete/p 1 /s user cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a defaultbox sdelete/p 1 /s defaultbox cd .. attrib -h -r -s -a sandbox sdelete/p 1 /s sandbox

    Sandboxie

Prompting to save something is an option, as is automatically deleting the sandbox. I have both unchecked, so the sandbox doesn't go away until I securely delete it. I have not had sucess using Eraser to delete it, so wrote a bat file for the purpose. edit: All the temporary internet files are down there in "content.ie5". Also, securely deleting it is not fast, using sdelete. Here is a screenshot of the "sandbox" with most of the folders open:

    Sandboxie

What I like about sandboxie is its transparency. In windows explorer you can open up the "Default Box" and see every change that has been made by the sandboxed program. Sometimes there are surprises. As far as I know, Returnil and Powershadow protect the HD very well, but with sandboxie you can see it. Also you can use a bat file to securely delete the sandbox if you as overcautious as I am.
  18. I entered this: find /i "install date" DOS went off looking for it, for about an hour...find is a valid command, but DOS never did find the date. used SIW, found it. SIW is pretty remarkable. Anyway, thanks for the info.
  19. Speaking only for myself and millions of average schmucks like me, <<<(big laugh to remove any sarcasm) I just simply cannot take the time.
  20. Well, its colorful, maybe not 100% accurate. Zooming in, moving around is interesting. edit 29 september 09: link deleted, it is now a pay site.
  21. Thank you, Hazelnut, got it. Haven't installed it yet.
