  1. Thank you, Humpty, got'em. Download-a-holic.
  2. Hi, Help Needed. How about this. Post a HijackThis log just in case the problem is malaware related. It really doesn't sound like something caused by CCleaner...??? download HJT from: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ckthis/download Post the log in this forum: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showforum=12 Spyware moderators will review it and make recommendations. Don't do anything until they say to.
  3. Ver. 3 caused problems w/ XP, as described above. If you can take precautions, make a restore point, make a registry backup, etc, and make sure you have a couple of hours to fix it if it goes blooey, then maybe so...since version 2.4.18.184 is really good on XP. Also, if I kept up with the install process, the firewall would have been really good if it had worked, does more than most FWLs. My 2 cents.
  4. I googled a bit and found a calculator: http://www.journeysystems.com/?powercalc There are no values for some of the gadgets are installed on this machine, so I just made a best guess using the largest possible values. Also read that if the power supply is failing, sometimes some hardware loses power but some does not, so maybe the power supply fails a bit at a time when it gets hot, leaves the vid card underpowered?. Good luck, Mike.
  5. This new version locked my computer up tighter than a pit bull on a pot roast. Every desktop shortcut I tried to click on said that "whatever" is not a valid windows application. . .might have said a valid 32 bit windows application, don't remember for sure. Said windows explorer, Winword, internet explorer, ...any of the shortcuts... were not valid applications. Couldn't run command prompt. Couldn't run command prompt from task manager. Couldn't shut down from task manager. Couldn't shut down from "Start > Shut Down". System tray icons gone. edit: Now that I think about it, nothing with an exe extension would run. Scary. Best I can remember, during the installation process, I selected all the manual options, as opposed to having the app make all the decisions. That may have been the problem. Also selected the highest security settings offered. The learning function took quite a while. Then it seemed that the explorer shell just quit. Then it I began to get the "not valid" warnings. Didn't mean to write a book, just hope that the information might help. Turned the power off, rebooted into safe mode, used system restore, got it back. Good old f8. Thank you Bill Gates, I take back all the bad things I said.
  6. How will that affect SpyBot 1.5s procedure of updating the hosts file pretty often? I am only using the spybot hosts file, letting the app update it at will. Thanks.
  7. Happy Thanksgiving Day to all, and may God bless.
  8. I know the feeling, Dennis. Every time I make a "momentous discovery", it turns out that everyone here knew it, there are 12 websites that describe it, and Doug Knox has a script for it. Thanks for the tip. I'll use it.
  9. Yes, I get an error message also. Askey just posted this link to the manual update site: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ I downloaded and ran the .exe.
  10. Well, Humpty, that sent me into a paroxysm of reading. Found tons of information about VM rootkits. Good info. Thanks. I'm gonna go lock the door.
  11. I dump'em too. keep passwords in a txt file, just in case the poor brain goes temporarily inactive.
  12. You're quite right. No offense intended.
  13. Posted a link yesterday to this, maybe in the wrong thread? Apparently if you have a maxtor or seagate drive, you can get these for free. I won't have time to try them for a while yet, so cannot report. Maybe other members will ring in about their effectiveness. http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/new...ilities-is-free good luck.
  14. "Eight people have been killed and at least 10 others injured in a shooting at a school in southern Finland..." Very sad. Sorry for you, CeeCee.

    Please Help!

It may be that you can get SeaGate DiskWizard and Maxtor Maxblast free if you own a SeaGate or Maxtor drive. Go see: (follow the link to "The Inquirer has the scoop"). http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/07/28/ge...image-for-free/ I have not used these, just found them, but did download them. The .exe files are huge. Anybody had experience with the apps?
  16. Recently checked some files from a fairly new computer which had been protected by McAfee. AVG AntiSpyware found HotBar.exe hiding among some pictures. Out of curiosity, while in powershadow and sandboxie, I dbl clicked the file. SpywareGuard, of all things, caught it first. Attached are screenshots. Old PUP, caught by an old security app. I can't remember when SpywareGuard last updated.
  17. Well, I have an old version of webroot's window washer installed and running . Had spysweeper also but uninstalled it, too many conflicts, too little help. They may still have my information from those days. There is a trial version of spysweeper which has limited functions available at: http://majorgeeks.com/Spy_Sweeper_d3263.html I wouldn't install spysweeper even if I knew it would enable the download of the free firewall; too many conflicts, too little help. But it is available. I wish you much luck getting the firewall. Maybe some other member will suggest an good way to do it.
  18. Hi Fransico. I downloaded OK it from here (Andavari's link): http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/d...l/features.html Filled out the screens and got the registration code OK. There was this in the registration email, but it don't think it means that you can't have it: I am not an existing customer. Have not installed it. Probably won't. But I got everything I need. FYI, have had good results from most of webroot's products, really bad results from their help/support function. Don't pay attention to them, just try the download from Andavari's link. Hope it works OK.
  19. Had 2 ideas. All at once! 1. Processor heating up?? Seem to have read that that will result in slowdown. 2. Post a current HJT log, maybe an old problem is back.
  20. Got my backup partition copied to an external usb drive. Unplugged most times. No tunnelling. Same for putting it on a DVD, but mine won't fit. Wouldn't work, maybe, for a partition you use a lot.
