    CCleaner Help!

Did you delete any files from the Windows or Windows\System32 folder?? Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926333 and try the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool. Richard S.
  3. If you need access to certain web sites but keep getting blocked then you should contact your IT department. Trying to bypass restrictions imposed by your company (even for good reason) might get you into trouble. If you needed access to internet for something personal then use your internet phone instead. Richard S.
  4. To defrag successfully you much have sufficient contiguous free space for files to move around in one piece. Since your fragmented file is bigger than the free space remaining defragging wouldn't be possible. To make matters worse FAT32 folders cannot be moved (unlike NTFS) which have can also interfere with the defragging process. If you want a quick solution to make everything contiguous just move all files and folders to your Desktop or another drive and then move them back. Richard S.
  5. They're shortcut files you won't find anything useful inside apart from the files they were linked to. Richard S.
  6. Virus Total is about as useful as a ouija board or poo generator. Because VT uses heuristic scanning the results can be misleading and full of false positives. To expose the lameness of this technique I packed Control Panel from Windows XP and uploaded it to Virus Total. The results were as follows: Virus.Win32.Virut.q!IK, Suspicious File, Virus.Win32.Virut.q and Win32.Malware.gen#UPX (suspicious). I know for a fact there's nothing wrong with this executable but sadly other people might take their results the wrong way. If I recall correctly Piriform had some malware accusations in the past thanks to Virus Total including the author of "Unlocker" who got his website banned thanks to crappy heuristic scan results. The bottom line with Virus Total is it can be useful but don't take the results at face value because it's not reliable enough. If you get many hits then you should consider your sample as viral, however with 2 or 3 hits you should treat it with caution. Richard S.
  7. Can you perform a System Restore?? Richard S.
  8. Unless your router is running in some kind of weird mode your IP address shouldn't be the same as the gateway IP address. Please double check your IP config values again. When I'm connected to my LINKSYS router via wired LAN I have the following IP configuration: Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-13-37-69-64-32 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100 <=== my IP address 192.168.1.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 <=== gateway IP 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 194.168.4.100 <=== my ISP DNS server 194.168.8.100 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 14 August 2011 21:27:53 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 15 August 2011 21:27:53 If your gateway IP is 192.168.1.1 then open your web browser with http://192.168.1.1 When requested a username enter "Admin" (without double quotes) and password "Admin" (without double quotes). Please take note of the uppercase "A" because passwords are usually case sensitive. If login fails try: admin and admin for username / password, if that fails then leave the username box empty and fill the password with Admin or admin. If you suspect the default password has been changed on your router you may need to perform a hard reset. Look at the back or underneath for a small hole it maybe labelled reset or something. Use a small pencil or needle screw driver and poke the hole (while still switched on). Richard S.

    Solid Drive

Defraggler speaks the truth. SSD have limited write cycles which is why it's not advisable to perform intensive read /write actions. Furthermore SSD have no moving parts unlike traditional drives so the effects of fragmented files between both technologies are not comparable. As for external drives your speed is limited by the interface i.e USB controller that defragging really won't make much difference. Richard S.
  10. Well CCleaner has been port from Windows so I'm guessing the UI interface hasn't been modified yet. Just out of curiosity could someone post an example of Native Mac interface vs CCleaner's Windows interface. Richard S.
  11. To rule hardware problems do you get similar fluctuations using SpeedFan?? Richard S.
  12. No Service Pack 3?? Richard S.
  13. and in a Flash your battery life hits rock bottom. I hate Flash it's CPU intensive crap unsuitable for running on portable devices unless you have an ARMv7 processor. Also why do 3rd party tools do a much better job at handling flash content i.e. XBMC or Google's YouTube video player?? Richard S.
  14. The login page is for accessing the router's setup page if you haven't configured your router yet I very much doubt wifi is enabled by default. It's important to login to your router to make sure it has a unique name (ssid) and that you have encryption enabled i.e. WPA or WPA2 to prevent unauthorised access. As for your laptop you've disabled your wifi, to enable you need to check your laptop manual but it would probably involve a sliding side switch or a certain keyboard combination i.e. funct + wifi. One other thing your XP must have at least SP2 installed if it predates this service pack you may find wireless access extremely flaky or non-existent (Start, Run "winver.exe" to find out). Richard S.
  15. CCleaner "cleans" it doesn't configure startup items you'll need something like Sysinternals Autoruns for that. Richard S.
  16. Are you re-running the installer?? You should have desktop icon with Reciva or Start menu hopefully. Richard S.
  17. If files don't open they are corrupted beyond use. bin it. Richard S.
  18. If your quick launch is cluttered why not have CCleaner as a desktop icon instead that way you know where to find it when you need it. As for 3rd party tools I don't see anything wrong with using them because sometimes you need to add functionality to operating system or applications that lack your requirements. If you don't want to use nircmd.exe there is an alternative providing don't mind getting to see a glimps of the DOS Prompt window. Create a new desktop shortcut, then cut and paste the following text for the first entry: "Next", "Finish".Now go to start menu: "Start", "Programs", right click over "Startup", select "Open" and move your shortcut into "Startup". All done, now every time Windows loads the desktop CCleaner should automatically start as minimised. Richard S.
  19. Why not add a quick launch icon?? that way you free up RAM and can instantly start CCleaner when you need it. If you still want to start CCleaner minimised then Nirsoft's NirCmd should be able to help. Richard S.
  20. If you need to prevent sleeping then change your "Power Options" inside Control Panel accordingly. Richard S.
  21. Forget the wireless side of your computer the most important thing is to make sure that your router is communicating correctly with your cable / dsl modem. As Tr3bg0D had instructed when you connect you router to your computer using the LAN cable do you get internet access or an assigned IP address?? If no then restart your cable modem by turning off, waiting 10 seconds and turning back on, waiting for flashing lights to settle down. Still no IP address?? (check and make sure LAN and Internet are not swapped at the router side) Open the following link into your web browser http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.254 do you get a login prompt?? If you're asked to login try username: (blank) and password: admin, if that fails then try username: admin password: admin Once you have established a working internet connecting using LAN then we can continue to solving the wireless part of your problem. Richard S.
  22. If a media player, digital camera, mobile phone connected to Windows doesn't display a drive letter then it's not compatible with Recuva or any other recovery software. These types of devices only transfer files like FTP, there's no direct disk access which is an important requirement for recovery software. In the case of digital cameras with no drive letter in Windows recovery can only be done by physically removing the memory card and using it in an external USB memory card reader. Richard S.
  23. If you're recently uninstalled DVD related software i.e. disc burning then it sounds like an upper / lower class filter problem. Richard S.
