  1. What we have found in practice is that if you tick or untick the 'save to .ini' box you get the error message and the tickbox doesn't change, but if you then close and reopen CCleaner you'll see that the setting and tickbox has actually been changed. And if you look at the .ini file itself in File Explorer the date/time modified has been changed. Just for clarity what Windows version are you running now? I notice that when posting last year you were still using XP. But I'm not sure just what you are meaning when you say "running under a restricted account." Obviously an account with restricted permissions, but just what are those restrictions? To save a .ini file the user must have permission to write to the folder where CCleaner is installed.
  2. I note that you say CC Cleaner is that correct or a typo? The official CCleaner only has 2 'Cs' - but there is a known fake product that has 3. The support team for the genuine product know all about the Black Friday cashback offers.
  3. If you use Malwarebytes (or even if you don't) then be aware that there are reports of a rash of scam email invoices at the moment. https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/267733-fake-receipt/ It's just a tech support phishing scam, flag it as spam in your email app, then delete it. If you should get one - Don't respond to it and definitely don't call the phone number. Clues: "Items :- Malware bytes secure system" (There is no Malwarebytes product of that name). "Price :- $449.99" (Nowhere near that price - Mawarebytes Premium is $US 39.96, or £30 in the UK, for a 1 year, one machine, Home licence).
  4. Yes, they didn't get round to fixing it this time. However further testing has shown that the 'save to .ini' setting is in fact being changed and saved when you tick or untick it. It is the message itself being shown that is the error. ie. There is no error, so the message should not be being shown.
  5. No takers then? - It's a soldering iron Just to show I'm not making it up: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Electric-Powered-Soldering-Touch/dp/B07MKMBZVG/ref=sr_1_325?dchild=1&keywords=soldering+iron&qid=1607481771&refinements=p_36%3A118658031&rnid=118657031&s=diy&sr=1-325 It's not quite the same translation as I quoted above, I can't find that particular one again, but close enough. There are numerous Chinese companies selling the same mini soldering iron on Amazon - at prices between £4.50 and £15. A few of them have the same translation. I guess you pay more for a better translation? Another, slightly better, translation is: "Don't rotate when removing the welding head cap! You can unplug directly, otherwise, the loose welding head won't hot! Sightly touching the metal point on the body of the soldering pen, then the LED light will be lightened up and jop can be started." Although I've always use a mains powered soldering iron I'm tempted by some of the new generation portable mini soldering irons. Some of them seem to use the same battery connections (type 510) as certain models of vape pen, which makes sense as vape pen coils have temperatures of around 200-300 degC in use. As I don't do a lot of soldering these days it would be handy if I could just screw a soldering tip onto one of my old vape pen batteries for occasional quick use.
  6. It seems to think that you already have a CCleaner Professional license that needs to be renewed. Have you had a CCleaner Professional license on that computer in the past? @Dave CCleanercould you take a look at this and see if the users email is registered to a license.
  7. Not sure that you should have installed Office, or anything else, whilst your in the middle of a file recovery discussion. But I'm sure you know that and took steps, it's just a warning to others who may be reading this. I'm not familiar with DD. It would be interesting to know just what happened during the Windows Update to remove your files, but sometimes you can never find out. Hope you can get at least some of them back. PS. One thing about Win 10, It's prompted me to now do a file backup at least every month before Patch Tuesday comes round. I can easily reinstall apps anytime, so just backup my (precious?) files to a removable drive.
  8. That's true, Custom Clean covers Health Check's 'Privacy' & 'Space' junk cleaning, but with rules you can set and change yourself rather than simply usng Health Check's default rules which you can't change. You can still do the other two Health Check 'Pro' functions yourself from the Tools menu, just like we did before Health Check existed. With CCleaner Pro Health Check just brings them together and runs them automatically every time you clean; they are 'extras' and CCleaner Free doesn't run them in Health Check. I'll be honest here and say that those two Pro functions don't need to be run every time that you clean, which is one reason CCleaner Free doesn't run them. Health Check's 'Speed' function is Tools>Startup. - It changes what is launching at boot/reset and removes anything unneeded that may be slowing down your computer startup. Health Check does it automatically using it's own rules, Tools>Startup gives you more control over what is and isn't launched at startup but you do have to decide for yourself. Once you've organised it then it doesn't need to be run each time you do a clean; and if you've managed to run Health Checks 'Speed' once in the past then unless you install something new or do a Windows Feature Update, (ie. a Windows version number change), you should be pretty much sorted already. Health Check's 'Security' function is Tools>Software Updater - It checks that certain (not all) installed apps are up to date. (Again that doesn't really need to be run each time you clean, once a month should be plenty).
  9. A bit of translation humor: I was looking online today for a particular tool that I need a replacement for. We all know there a some strange translations from Chinese companies on Amazon. - But from these operating instructions can anybody guess what fairly simple tool I was looking at? (There is one slight clue in there). PS. I know the Aussies refer to Ned Kelly as 'Tin-head Ned', but I've never heard of 'Iron-head Gary' before and apparently if he shakes his iron head it falls off.

If the account that you were cleaning from, ie. your current user account, didn't have admin privileges then it wouldn't be able to clean the Administrator account, - or any other user account come to that. When using CCleaner Pro to clean 'All Users' or 'Selected Users' you need to do it from an account with admin privileges. Of course the general advice is that for security you shouldn't use an account with admin privileges for everyday use and should only use an admin account when you need to. If you were to get a virus/malware then it can do more damage from an account with admin rights. (But it's probably also the security advice that's the most ignored).
  11. I believe the appcrash issue is being looked at and may be patched sometime this month. PS. A 'clean install' is a term used to mean either a first time install, or a complete uninstall/reinstall - as opposed to an update/upgrade of an existing install. As you have uninstalled CCleaner then when you reinstall again that will be a 'clean install'.
  12. Yes, it's a known bug and is being worked on. We are told that there will be a couple of 'bugfixing' updates this month to fix a few errors like this one that don't really affect the functioning of CCleaner, or Windows, but which shouldn't be happening.
  13. That's a different thing altogether to the Smart Cleaning or Automatic updating system tray icon. What that is meant to do is that when you minimise the CCleaner UI it puts it in the system tray rather than the general taskbar. (I've never really seen the point of that myself, maybe it's simply a hangover from old Windows versions?)
  14. Simply download CCleaner to the laptop, install it, and register it with the name and key that you got in your purchase confirmation email. If you are having problems registering then see here (there's a download link there as well): https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/204043844--Problems-activating-or-registering-CCleaner-Professional If you are still having problems then please come back.
  15. We never know how much technical knowledge a new member has, so we tend to err on the side of them having little when replying at first. If you do a websearch for 'files missing following Windows 10 update' you'll see that it is usually simply an account problem. However some Windows Updates have been known to actually delete files, the update to 1809 did it for users who had folder redirects in place. (It simply ignored the redirects and deleted anything that wasn't in the default documents, pictures, etc. folder locations). I assume that you know about the Elevated Administrator account in Win 10 which has more privileges than a standard Admin account, to see if you can find the files from there? But after using Disk Drill, and rolling back Windows it's looking less likely. Did DD find the files? TBH I fell out with the costly subscription model of MS Office these days, (you can still buy Office Home & Student 2019 outright), and I now use one of the free alternatives. Using it I've never had a problem with compatability with the 'genuine' Office. I'm using Softmaker Free Office (theres a paid version as well); but there are other good Office alternatives out there, both free and paid for, so it may be worth taking a look and saving some money. Give some of the free versions a try. Just for ease of finding some: https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/best-microsoft-office-alternative The one I'm using is second on that list.
  16. Thanks, I've alerted the staff and it's being looked into. As we only have these two reports then it may be difficult to track down just what the issue is, it may be specific to some setting or software on your particular machines which is why we are not geting lots of shouts from others. But knowing that it's confined to Health Check and is not affecting Custom Clean should help narrow it down. I'd stick to using Custom Clean for now as that is working for you. Most advanced users, and those who had CCleaner before the advent of Health Check, use Custom Clean anyway - it gives more control over what is cleaned or not.
  17. Sorry, do you mean that Health Check closed without completing again?
  18. I've removed your Cleverbridge number. You shouldn't put things like that on an open forum, someone could (will) steal them. We had another similar report yesterday, only the two of you (so far). I'm waiting for that user to come back with the answers to some questions. I'm trying to think what could have changed, it's not CCleaner, so have you by any chance installed the Windows 'Optional quality update' (KB4586853) in the last couple of days? If so then was Health Check working properly before that? Have you tried running a Custom Clean? If Custom Clean also stops then it may give more indication of what the problem may be. If you could do an "Analyze" first in Custom Clean, and give a screenshot of the analyze results, that would tell us what type of files CCleaner is finding on your machine. Then click on 'Run Cleaner' and see if they are removed correctly. The two usual questions just for completeness - What is your Windows 10 version & Build number? What Antivirus are you using?
  19. What the heck happened indeed. Don't panic. First off: CCleaner would not cause a Windows restart, either at installation or when run. And a Windows Update is a Windows Update, it's nothing to do with CCleaner. It's just a coincidence that you had run CCleaner shortly before Windows decided to Update itself. So what has happened? I suspect that what you have seen is an Automatic Windows Update to Windows 10 version 20H2, (or possibly even 20H1) Microsoft have been 'rationing' them out over time, especially to machines that may not have been fully compatible with the Update. There are some changes to 20H1/20H2 due next Tuesday and so more machines will now be compatible, which may explain why you got it now. (I have a friends laptop here at the moment that says it's almost ready for 20H1/H2 but not quite yet, when it is it will automatically update itself). Do you know what version of Windows you had before this Update? If it was 1809 then Windows would automatically update it, even if you had automatic updates turned off. (That's because 1809 has reached 'end of life'). So what now? It is known sometimes for your files and desktop to go, or appear to be gone, following a Windows Update. Again don't panic, they should still be there and you should be able to get them back. (It's only in rare cases that they have actually gone). The most likely explanation is that is because the Windows Update has logged you into a temporary user account rather than your usual user account. Although as you say "logging in took some time" then I suspect that you have created, and are now using, a different user account than before. (A new one). In that case you are now logging into and using a different user desktop and settings, different documents and photo folders, and so on. That would look exactly as you describe. - You can't see your old documents/photos/etc. because they are in a different user account. (PS. See below for what has happened to the free space on the disc). The older account should still be there, with it's old desktop, settings, documents and photos, etc. If it is you just need to change which one you log into. If you restart your machine do you see more than one account to log into? If you can still see the older account then you just need to change which is the default user account. If you can't see the old user account then there are various other things you can do; such as look for a backup of that account in 'windows.old'. There are online articles that can help with that, but if you are not techie minded they can often be a bit much to follow. If you are not techie minded (or don't have a techie friend to help) probably the simplest way is to just 'roll back' the Windows Update to the previous build. If you are still in time to do that. (You may not be able to rollback if this was an update from 1809). That does take an hour or two to complete. The fact that you say a lot of previously free space has been taken up gives hope that you should still be able to roll back. That extra used space will be full of a 'hidden' backup of the old Windows installation and files. See this for how to roll back a Windows Feature (Major Build) update. https://pureinfotech.com/uninstall-windows-10-2004-2020-update/ If you do that then once you have rolled back Windows make a current backup of your files, photos etc. - and let Windows try the update again to see if it can get it right this time.
  20. Microsoft has a problem with fake extensions for new Edge. Even worse they had approved these fake extensions and put them in the official Edge store with little or no checking. https://www.ghacks.net/2020/12/01/microsoft-has-a-fake-extensions-problem-in-its-microsoft-edge-store/ https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/11/fraudulent-add-ons-infiltrate-the-official-microsoft-edge-store/ If you are seeing redirects or other strange behaviour in new Edge then check your extensions.
  21. It is a know bug and they are working on a couple of updates for release this month to fix a few small bugs like this one. We are told that when released the fix for this one will remove any old .dmp files that may have been created. So you can just ignore them for now. In the meantime as said above: For a temporary work around you can make the .dmp files an 'Include' so that Custom Clean's 'Custom files and folders' will remove them each time you run Custom Clean. Once the bug has been fixed you will no longer need the include. Remember to also tick this:
  22. We could do with some more details and information. How is it quitting? Is it just closing down altogether, or is it freezing? Is there any error message shown? The usual questions , I can see you are on Win 10 Pro and CCleaner 5.74.8198 but: Which Windows 10 version? What Antivirus are you running? Any other security apps, firewalls, etc.? EDIT- Just to add to the above questions: Have you by any chance installed the Windows 'Optional quality update' (KB4586853) in the last couple of days? Have you tried running a Custom Clean? It it still closing if you do? Custom Clean may give more indication of what the problem may be. If you could do an "Analyze" first in Custom Clean and give a screenshot of the analyze results that would tell us what type of privacy/space files CCleaner is finding. Then run a clean and see if they are removed correctly. Also could you run Tools>Software Updater and tell us what it finds? (That's the equivalent of Health Checks 'Security') Don't update it just tell us what CCleaner is finding. Last question (for now) Is your browser synced? See the link in my signature below for why files may come straight back after cleaning if your browser is synced.
  23. The product mentioned is not an Anti-Virus programme. Nor will it "keep my PC running clean". It's an Anti-Rootkit which is a specialist tool, usually used by technicians, for the detection and removal of rootkit infections that your standard Anti-Virus hasn't caught. That is to fix machines that may have already been infected with a rootkit, if you have not been infected by a rootkit then you don't need it. It should not be used as a replacement for an Anti-Virus, it's a removal tool not a protection tool. Although they do now seem to be marketing it to home users the manufacturers own website clearly stares: And of course - Other Anti-Rootkit apps are available.
  24. No, it shouldn't make any difference to CCleaner which type of drive you are using, spinning disc or solid state. The files to be cleaned are the same whichever type of drive they are on.
  25. It's fairly simple: Make a note or your registered name and license key, they can be found at Options>About>License Information, - be careful to copy it correctly and be especially careful not to confuse numbers/letters in the key. (S & 5, B & 8, etc, can be confused if you're not careful). Unistall CCleaner from your old machine. Install CCleaner Free on your new machine, open it and go to Options>About>Upgrade to Pro. Enter your name and key then click on 'Register'.
