Why is C++ ugly??? Try Delphi for something really ugly. (Of course, nothing beats Cobol in sheer ugliness!)

Go to 'My Settings', and on the 'General Settings' tab you can set your time zone, in which forum times will be displayed. (I can see this post's time as "Posted Today, 01:40 PM", which is my local time. [Although I would much prefer to see it displayed as a real time, i.e. 13:40].) This should have automatically been transferred from the old forum settings.

I don't think that there is an urgent need for an x64 CCleaner version. For an application that runs for a few seconds every day (or week / month) and uses very little memory, I don't see any advantage of running it in 64-bit mode. 64 bit brings a lot to applications that use very large amounts of memory; CCleaner is not one of them.

If it was me, I would go and check what is actually in the Firefox cache (before running CCleaner, of course).

I personally do not believe in registry cleaning / defragging / compressing / etc. I have my XP system for more than 8 years, never used any of the above methods, and it still runs as fast as on the first day. But I do defragment the HD, including registry files, folder files, page file, and MFT.

Please see this topic: You are not connected to the Internet.
-
You mentioned that you have Diskeeper; you can always defragment the page file using Diskeeper's boot-time defragmentation method. It can also defragment the MFT and folders file at the same time.

Speccy v1.01.132 on Windows 2000 Professional SP4. Now under Network, Speccy is claiming "You are not connected to the Internet". How come? Of course I am connected to the Internet, via LAN. How else would I post here?

To answer my own question: 501 posts are needed to change the 'Member Title - I just did it (couldn't do it with 500 only).

Unused, forgotten, left-over, orphan registry keys may make the registry files a few KB larger, but they have no effect whatsoever on the computer's, or Windows, or applications performance.

So you are having a problem with Flash Player? What exactly happens when you try to run a Flash object on Firefox? Also, can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/, and what is the Version Information displayed under it?

64-bit makes sense for applications that use very large amounts of memory, e.g. graphics or video processing programs. To create a 64-bit version of CCleaner would be purely for the fun of the developers; the users would not gain anything at all.
-
I wonder what you mean by that...? 64-bit is all about memory addressing. With a 32-bit address you can only access memory that is within that range (0 - 4,294,967,295). File limitations are determined by the file system, e.g. NTFS vs. FAT32.

My absolutely favorite movie of all times: Tampopo - I watch it about two or three times a year. I find every time some details that I never noticed before. If you love food, you love this movie! P.S. If you love Mahler, you love this movie!

Does CC's "Compact Databases" do the exact same thing as SpeedyFox?
pwillener replied to slowday444's topic in CCleaner
I just read up about SpeedyFox, and it seems to do exactly the same. I have used the 'Compact Database' option once in CCleaner, and it takes a rather long time. So this is something I will only use from time to time, e.g. once in a month. I will not keep it permanently checked. -
As I wrote in my post, I have uninstalled all McAfee products from all my systems. I tried AVG, but it caused severe problems on one of the Japanese XP machines, so I eventually went for Microsoft Security Essentials, which appears to do its job in a very unobtrusive way.

I don't know from where you are downloading v2.33 — v2.31 (April 26) is the latest official version according to http://www.piriform.com/blog/2010/4/26/ccleaner-v231.

So how many posts do we need to change the 'User Title'? I cannot see that anywhere in my Profile or Settings.

When I noticed this topic a few days ago, I went and checked my McAfee DAT version, to see if I had that "bad" DAT on my system. To my surprise I found that I had an old DAT (5937 I believe) despite the fact that I noticed McAfee auto-updating every day. I went to download the manual update installer, but it wouldn't run - it would give me a lengthy message about being unable to run this install package. Googling the message I found that McAfee is no longer updating VirusScan versions older than v8.5 after March 31! I went to check all of my other systems, and - yes - all had the latest DAT version of March 31! I find it unbelievable that McAfee would do such a thing, without the software giving the slightest information about that to the user! I have been using McAfee VirusScan on all my machines since Windows 95, and I never had a problem with it. But now that's it; I spent this past weekend uninstalling McAfee from all machines, and replacing it with an alternate antivirus software.

Regarding links opening in same window: this is something that must be configured by the board admin; I hope they will do that soon!

I doubt that these softwares are up-to-date.

Finally - IPB3; I like it!

I currently don't have Windows XP available, so I cannot test or check anything for you. You know that you can run tasks as other users, e.g. when right-clicking on a program or shortcut, 'Run as Administrator'. This may also be possible to apply to shortcuts or scripts in the startup list, or even scheduled tasks. Sorry, that's all I can contribute.

You need to use Windows' System Restore tool to revert to an earlier system state. See this article for details http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084/ (the details may slightly differ depending on your Windows version).
