    CCleaner 3

But not the Google toolbar - I couldn't live without it!
  2. I got a similar message for the last two or three days trying to go to the forum from IP address 115.179.87.133
  3. And the keyword here is "relatively"; no registry cleaner is 100% safe, and what they achieve is mostly questionable. I have never heard of a case where a registry cleaner resulted in a more stable or faster Windows system. In my view: leave the Windows registry alone! In the almost 9 years I have used my XP system I have never run a registry cleaner, and my system runs as good as on the first day.
  4. For problems, questions, and feedback on the Flash Player "Square", you can use the forums at http://forums.adobe.com/community/labs/flashplayer10
  5. Windows 9x did indeed require periodic reinstalls or repair installs; I remember doing it some 3 or 4 times a year. On the other hand I have never seen a need to install Windows NT, 2K, or XP. Both my 2K and XP systems perform as well as on the first day; in fact I think XP performs much better, due to the years of fine-tuning. If you keep an eye on your startup programs, Windows performance will rarely deteriorate. (Of course, some defraggling once or twice a year will also help.)
  6. Well, I am glad you donated to the original developers (Piriform). I know that there are some scam sites around the Internet that sell free software (not their own). Anyway, have you finally been able to download and use CCleaner?
  7. When you run the basic cleaner, or the registry cleaner?
  8. Can you show us the link where you were asked to pay anything? I have downloaded every version of CCleaner since v1.0, and I never saw anything asking me to pay. (I did, however, make a donation from the original ccleaner.com site. On the new piriform.com site it is rather difficult to find the donation link.)
  9. Windows usage does not require any learning; it doesn't matter if you use Windows 3.1, 9x, XP, or 7 - the functionality is basically the same. Many XP users (including myself) refuse to leave it because it does everything they need. When this computer breaks I will get a new one with Windows 7 or 8, but currently I have absolutely no need for it. And most available software out there still works on XP-SP3.
  10. It seems that you alone know what is true and what is not.
  11. That may be true, but users need an OS that is easy to handle. I have worked with many operating systems over the years, but Mac OS is by far the most complicated and difficult to use. I think it is especially and exclusively made for geeks.
  12. If you ever need MSI installers for Flash Player (or non-Windows platform installers): http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
  13. The simple answer is: keep the program that you use, and uninstall those you don't. Ask about those you don't know what they are, but Google may find you the answer quite easily. Of those programs you keep, make sure that you update them regularly - I noticed a few on your list that are quite outdated, e.g. Java 6 Update 15; the latest version is j6u21.
  14. Does this still happen with the latest QuickTime version 7.6.7?
  15. I installed the update on all my systems (Firefox & IE), partially with manual uninstall / install, and partially via auto-update, and no problems at all. Note that you need to click the checkbox next to 'I have read and agree...' before you can click the INSTALL button (the color scheme here is really terrible!).
  16. Did you only use CCleaner's "normal" file cleaning, or did you also use the registry cleaning portion? If so, did you let it make a backup? If yes, did you try to restore the backup?
  17. Thank you, ident and DennisD - I didn't know that. Definitely much easier than adding that to CCleaner...
  18. Not sure if those data are saved in the browser cache or Flash Player cache, or a combination of both. Most likely an impossible task to recover them consistently.
  19. I have ERUNT installed on my system, and every day at startup it takes an automatic registry backup to %WINDIR%\ERDNT\AutoBackup in the forum of a folder named YYYY-MM-DD. These will accumulate to a great number after time, and of course occupy a lot of space. I would like to keep, say only the last 5 backups. Is there a way that this could be incorporated into CCleaner somehow? (I am sure that I am not the only ERUNT user around here.)
  20. That doesn't mean anything; please answer Hazelnut's questions.
  21. Individual files can be recovered using Recuva, but recovering a whole browser cache (with thousands of files) may prove somewhat difficult...
  22. Svchost should never run at a high CPU usage over a long period. If it does, you should investigate what is using svchost so intensely. I don't think TuneUp can just "cure" that - it may have been a pure coincidence that the usage stopped after running that tool.
  23. I don't know where to discuss this - here, or in the Software forum. So let me do it here, since I started this topic. I think that this application is a stupid idea! Some questions I have: will this application automatically update the user's winapp2.ini file when changes become available? will this application at least alert users when changes become available? what will that application do when changes become available, if anything? Users who have manually downloaded the winapp2.ini file know that they have it, and they take responsibility to update the file when changes become available. This is not an automatic process, and I remember I have been sitting for almost a year on an old winapp2.ini file before noticing the updates. I think if someone is to develop an application concerning winapp2.ini, they must consider the update aspect of it. Otherwise users will install winapp2.ini on their system, and forever sit on that version. Personally I think CCleaner itself should think of a mechanism to check for old winapp2.ini files. But then some users (like me) have user-modified versions of the winapp2.ini file. A difficult subject, altogether!
  24. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX It seems that someone is now peddling an application that installs winapp2.ini on your computer. (The download page is currently down.)
