  1. Uninstalling Office 2007 can be tricky at times - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/.
  2. My feeling is that before the four years are over, there will be an SP4, maybe even an SP5. I will be sticking with my two XP computers as long as I can, as they do not have the hardware to upgrade to W7. (But the W2K computers will have to go soon.)
  3. I am also on Windows 2000 SP4, and I don't think I can upgrade this machine to XP. Well, I think it is time to think about a new machine with Windows 7.
  4. "Freezing" may also be caused by overheating - check your temperatures with Speedfan.
  5. What was the previous version of CCleaner before trying to upgrade to 2.33? Since around version 2.29, CCleaner is "phoning home" during the installation (to confirm that you indeed install the latest version). If that "phone home" call cannot be completed (by your firewall, McAfee?), then the installation may not complete. Can you check the firewall and McAfee logs to see if that connection was perhaps intercepted?

I personally like to keep the recent file list in Microsoft Office, so I uncheck Office in the Applications tab. However, I don't need the temp files from Java RTE or Flash Player, so I let CCleaner delete those unneeded items.
  7. I have been happy with Dell for many years, but earlier this year my OptiPlex GX270 failed - something on the motherboard. (Maybe the very thing that started this topic?) So I called them, and they said they will come and pick it up, but I'll have to send them ¥5,000 first to cover the transport cost. After they received and examined it, they found faults on the MOBO, then sent me the bill (almost ¥50,000) which stated that I must pay the bill before they actually start to repair it! What kind of business practice is this??? There were other things during that whole repair thing that I found highly questionable: when I first called Dell Support with my problem, I had someone on the phone who spoke very well English. When they found out that I was a private customer they said that they cannot provide English support for private customers, corporate customers only... What kind of business practice is this???
  8. How do you find that XP is still on your machine - is it still bootable? If so, is it on a different partition than your C: drive, or is it on another (hidden) C: drive? Either way, we can help you to remove that old Windows installation, but this is not something that CCleaner or any automated program should be doing.
  9. Any topic written or titled in all-uppercase should be treated with extreme caution!
  10. I don't know if that 'Decline' button works now... I tried Foxit Reader many years ago (probably v1.x), and I remember clearly as it was today that I unchecked the Ask toolbar and went ahead with the install. To my surprise and dismay, the dreaded toolbar was installed anyway! And when I went to uninstall Foxit Reader, the dreaded toolbar did not get uninstalled! And when I tried to find an uninstaller for the dreaded toolbar, there was none! I know that there are now Foxit installers without the dreaded toolbar, but for me, I never trust that company again!

  12. Thank you for that information - that is very helpful. I have recommended this tool thousands of times in the Adobe forums, and it is indeed a shame that Microsoft has retired, rather than fixed it! It has been known to cause problems on systems where Office 2007 is installed. The good news is, there are still hundreds of downloads for the tool all around the web. P.S. I have updated the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility accordingly.
  13. The problem with Flash Player crashing as per my previous post is fixed in Firefox 3.6.6 that was released a few hours ago. See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/The+Adobe+Flash+plugin+has+crashed?s=plugin+timeout&as=s
  14. While disabling things, you may also consider to disable the new "hang detector" - it has a tendency to crash Flash Player on certain sites. To disable it set dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to -1 (or set it to a high value like 30 or 60 to prevent it from activating too soon).
  15. Thank you everybody for your attention Now today everything works well again - I can come to forum, sign-in, post - no more errors. If it happens again in the future, I will PM you (MrG) my IP address. (It will probably be the same that you see me posting from now.)
  16. The error continues, even if I use a different browser on the same system. Guess I cannot spend much time in this forum as long as this is not addressed.
  17. Not sure where to post this, so I'll drop it here in the Software forum. Yesterday, when trying to go to this (Piriform) forum, I got this error: That looks like I have been banned (as a spammer, perhaps?), or of course it could be a forum software malfunction. Today I tried again; same error. It showed me still as logged in; trying to logout gave the same error. Deleted all Piriform cookies and recycled browser (Firefox 3.6.4 on Windows 2000); still same problem (although I am no longer logged in after deleting the cookies). Just to make sure I tried on another computer (IE8 on Win XP), and here I could successfully go to and login to the forum. Any suggestions how to resolve it on my Win2K system?
  18. If you have problems with Flash Player, please post in the Adobe Flash Player forum http://forums.adobe.com/community/webplayers/flash_player When you do, mention your OS, browser, and Flash Player version, along with an exact description of your problem.
  19. Yes, I believe CCleaner does that - it installs the shortcut only under the user that installs it. The easiest solution is just to copy or move the shortcut/folder from the install-user's Programs to All User's Programs folder, i.e. move %USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\CCleaner to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs
  20. There is a separate subforum for that: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showforum=14
  21. You don't have to go to Filehippo, you can download the installer of your choice directly from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
  22. I deleted them after making a complete system backup.
  23. Do you run the cleaner before looking at the cookies?
