  1. XP-SP3 was released more than 2 years ago; there is no point to "fix" such an old release now. The exact cause for this problem is explained under 'User Complaints' at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP#Service_Pack_3
  2. You need to give a little bit more information.... What is your operating system? How do "most of your programs not work"? Why do you think this is related to CCleaner? Did you run CCleaner's registry cleaner? Did you let it make a backup? Did you try to restore the backup?
  3. I have limited disk space on my C: drive, so I recently did a full system backup, then let CCleaner delete all hotfix uninstallers. It liberated a great deal of disk space. If I didn't have that limited disk space, I would have kept them.
  4. I don't think that C:\TEMP is a regular temp file folder for Windows. Question: where do your environment variables %TEMP% and %TMP% point to?

    AVG 9

Thank you, Andavari, I didn't know that. I have now also deleted all the *.log.lock files in the Log folder, and AVG9 is still fully functional. However, these *.log.lock files were immediately recreated, so I think we should leave them alone. I would like to propose that these items be added to the cleanup of AVG9: %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Dumps\*.* %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Log\avg*.log.? %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Log\avg*.log.?? %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Temp\*.* %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\update\download\*.bin
  6. I don't think I have used Gopher since the early '90s - anyone still using that...?

How does CCleaner currently remove AVG9 stuff - I cannot find anything in winapp.ini or winapp2.ini ?

Glad that Hazelnut found the answer for you. Looks like a very small place! I have been to Akita and Hokkaido, but never Aomori. I have been living in Tokyo for 23 years, but there are still so many places in Japan that I have yet to visit. It is just this year that I have for the first time visited Okinawa. I could imagine that I could live out my retirement down there...

If you click on the 'My Settings' drop-down, you will get the settings panel; click on the 'Forum' tab here. This is what I see
  10. I think this feature is currently disabled.

Not sure what you mean with "first" and "last" - do you mean to say that you see the forum pages displayed with the oldest post on top? This is not how it should be; usually the newest post shows on top. I don't think this can be changed anywhere. But if indeed you see the oldest post on top, how does your Board Display Settings page look (from the drop-down panel on the top right | My Settings | tab Forums)? E.g. to what is 'Topic Display Mode' set?

    AVG 9

After deleting the above contents I rebooted Windows, and AVG9 started fine. I was also able to run Update, Scan, etc. I think it is safe to delete those files. P.S. regarding the avg*.log.? and avg*.log.?? files in the Log folder: there are many files like avg*.log.1 avg*.log.2 avg*.log.3 avg*.log.4 avg*.log.5 avg*.log.6 avg*.log.7 avg*.log.8 avg*.log.9 avg*.log.10 avg*.log.lock It was my feeling that it is safe to delete the .1 ~ .10 files, but not the .lock files, which are all from the installation day, but 0 bytes in size. I don't know if they are actually needed or not, but I thought I'd leave them alone.

    AVG 9

    What I did delete: %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Dumps\*.* %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Log\avg*.log.? %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Log\avg*.log.?? %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Temp\*.* %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\update\download\*.bin I have not been able to delete some of today's files from the Temp subfolder.

    AVG 9

Still playing with 'JDiskReport'; found lots of potential garbage from AVG9 in folders %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Dumps %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Log %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\Temp %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\avg9\update\download I will go and delete some of the stuff, to see if it prevents AVG9 from functioning.
  15. Maybe a Firefox process is still running? Check with the Task Manager's Processes tab.
  16. Thank you very much - most kind of you! That makes quite a difference on my old machine... I will soon open a new topic regarding AVG9
  17. It is actually better that way, as it will keep all your current CCleaner settings.
  18. Used a tool 'JDiskReport' today, and I found that the second-largest file (after the page file) was Google Earth's dbCache.dat in %APPDATA%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth. I have Google Earth checked in CCleaner, but it does not seem to touch that file. I wonder if that file could be cleaned (set to zero size, or deleted altogether), as I do not use Google Earth very often.
  19. I run CCleaner regularly on my Windows 2000 Pro - no problems ever. Windows 2000 Server is basically the same as the basic W2K version, with many extensions. So I am pretty sure it will run fine on the server version as well.
  20. It's how you said/wrote it. You are free to disagree with anyone's opinion, but you can still express that politely and respectfully.
  21. I seriously think you should show a little bit more respect to other forum members!
  22. CCleaner only puts a shortcut in the start program files of the user that installs it. If you want a shortcut in the All Programs list, then you must manually drag a shortcut to it.
  23. I would say that NTREGOPT is probably safe to use, as it comes from the same developer as ERUNT. However, I don't know if anybody every measured if there is any performance increase after using it.
  24. The $29.95 application advertised here is something completely different than what was originally discussed in this 2-year old topic. The post is simply a form of spam. (Check with Google - identical post appears in many other forums!)
  25. "Registry cleaning" is a very controversial issue! Some people - like me - think that it is best to leave the registry alone, especially when there are no actual problems with your computer system. "Cleaning" the registry from unused items, or even conflicting items, will not make your computer any faster. Other people think that the Windows registry needs regular "cleaning", and the more "problem" items are deleted, the better. In between the two opinions we can safely say that there are "soft" registry cleaners, such as CCleaner, which only clean items that are more or less safe to delete. Other cleaners are more aggressive, and there is always a danger that certain things (including Windows itself) will not work any more after such aggressive cleaning. I personally do not do, nor advocate, registry cleaning. But if you must, be sure to have a registry backup in case things get broken. (ERUNT is a long established registry backup and restore tool.)
