  1. how so Hazel? do you mean in general with the access to the forum - or the FF vs IE difference I'm experiencing?. for example, on this test PC, using IE, this is the longest in the last couple of days I've managed to stay connected without it going all spacky on me.
  2. if the above doesn't work, try this; the PC hopefully came with a driver CD or a folder on C:\ drive with the drivers pre-loaded, usually called SWSETUP or DRIVERS. find the sound driver (usually called audio if the drivers are saved in a folder) and run the setup.exe file. If you can't can't the CD or folder, find the motherboard make and model (you may have to open the side of the tower) and go to the manufacture's website and go to the drivers section (usually under Support or Drivers or Downloads) and get the driver for your OS version and motherboard model. sorry if that's a bit high-level, i'm not sure of your PC expertise, if anything needs further explaination, just let me know. plus the forum is a wee bit unstable at the present and i quickly fired this off.
  3. further research. tried IE and Opera, same results, even fired up the test PC and same thing there too. IE seems to have the best luck, although the 'no input file specified' is replaced with the 404 Page Not Found error. (i'm doing this now in IE when FF at the same time doesn't work - go figure)
  4. @basher, found this old thread on the potential issues with using CNET http://forum.pirifor...showtopic=33551
  5. thanks for the heads-up Andavari, at least it's nothing i can control/change at my end...
  6. anybody else having this intermittent problem - i'll be surfing the forum fine (using FF 16) then start getting 'no input file specified' when clicking on links, if i wait a while, it all comes good, usually only for a while then it happens again. when the 'no imput file' happens the piriforn forum home page is 'text' based, no graphics. just wondering if it was lucky me or if the forum still has lingering problems ?
  7. or if you are unhappy about you or something else adjusting the registry, i've always emptied/defrag'd the pagefile by; Control Panel, System, System Protection, Advanced tab, Performance, Settings button, Advanced tab, Change, Select 'no pageing file', Set, OK Reboot, once restarted, go back into Control Panel and turn it back on.
  8. not really an area i'm interested in but i thought DRM was cracked or too easily gotten around and that the industry was looking at or already had a different method of protection.
  9. the day that patent sees the light of day will be the day every person covers up their web cams !!!
  10. @arejfour your theory was promising but having very recently reinstalled Win7, and then all the usuaul support stuff like java, flash, adobe, shockwave, ccleaner, defraggler and all those other programs that pre-tick the box for "don't you also want to install this software too?" i can vouch that no registry entry for McAfee has been created on my machine.
  11. good to hear, thanks for the info
  12. i've only been a member for a couple of months and have seen as many 'security breaches' (i believe they were). just wondering if this is normal for this forum - or forums in general. and no!, there is no connection between those two points.
  13. In Settings, Options, Advanced, tick the box Save all settings to INI file will do that for you, even all your Excludes. the INI is kept in Program Files (varies according to 32/64 bit and OS version) in the Defraggler folder.
  14. {REMOVED REFERENCE TO ACCIDENTAL SWEARING BY THE ABOVE POSTER}
  15. my apologies Nergal, I changed the original C word to the correct P word for the male apendage thinking that would be alright. now i know. if i ever need to again, i'll use what my Grandmother always called it; long and dangly bits
  16. @Keatah so you have had no problems using MSIZAP ? I found this on the MS site; http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa370523%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
  17. Sounds like you are now qualified for the Microsoft Certification exams. Job well done - don't you feel impowered now ! The sad news is, now you have all this knowledge, unless you use it again, it's all going to fade away - how sad. all those hours & hours. But enjoy the high and the satisfaction of besting the machine.
  18. can someone please get me up to speed on where this thread is heading? between {edit} sizes, cooking storks and try-outs for a new "So You Think You Can Quote Music Songs" reality TV show, are we trying to improve CC? or are we discussing CC shortcomings? or maybe criticising NisSofer? or even recommending we start using NirSofer in conjunction with CC? the thread seems to be spinning it's wheels...
  19. that's what i wondered when i first went to 8gig RAM, surely Windows doesn't need a 12gig (using the 1.5x recommendation) pagefile. mind you, i set it that way anyway. but i was thinking there must be a break-even point. is there some point where the cost of maintaning a very large pagefile negates the potential performance benefit?
  20. well, if nothing else, it's made us all re-find our avatars and prompted others to change theirs.
  21. @asphyxium, you didn't elaborate on how a static sized pagefile remains unfragmented. obviously if the file size is dynamic, as the size changes so can it's location. my thought is, even a static sized file still has a chance of becoming fragmented.
  22. from what i've been reading on Do Not Track, it was always intended as a voluntary, opt-in process for each web site to honour or not..
  23. in my defence, i have to add - it was damn tasty !!! (hmmm - that probably didn;t help my case)
  24. By the way Bob - welcome to the forum. as Hazel said, turn them off from being included in DF. they are used if you ever need to go back to a previous Restore Point. if you have Restore Points turned off, the folder should be empty.
  25. have you tried using Windows Disk Defragmenter and seeing if you get the same results?
