  1. i'm sure that XP will definitely be around and well used by businesses way past the 500 day countdown. it wouldn't surprise me if MS may just increase the support date cut-off.
  2. @superfast, i think the new and increased file sizes are due to the 32 and 64 bit versions becoming 1. i couldn't find each version, that were about the 8meg size, only 1 which was coincidently doubled in size, so i'm assuming they have a '2 in 1' deal.

    Notepad++

    @superfast agreed, it is the tabs that has probably won me other the most, being able to compare two side by side is also great.
  4. +1 WebAtom Product Activation was introduced with XP. If these ********** (sorry, mis-guided geniuses) were able to do that, i would have thought it would have happened by now. When Windows gets installed(or re-installed) and the Product Key is valid, as long as the hardware hasn't changed too much, MS will activate it no worries. You can even do the OOBE command with the /a switch to manually initiate an activation. Who does not know what their license key is? It's on the Windows CD sleeve/case or on your PC in the form of that little green CoA sticker. Retail outlets and System Builders have to by law include that sticker. Of course if you lose it, you're buggered. But the onus is always on the consumer to safe-gaurd such info.
  5. i did try nlite, must be about 3 or so years ago. no, must be more, it was before Vista. i got it to work but something happened, can't remember exactly what, but i ended up ditching it and just doing the 'slip streaming' manually everytime. but you raise a good point, i should give it another crack, it must have had many iterations by now.

    Notepad++

    just a little thank you nodles for this thread. because of it, i have discovered the joys of Notepad++ it has replaced my reliance on Notepad (yeah yeah i know) and i have found it bloddy fantasic. i have recently started writting HTML code and it's especially great at doing that. but just the overall ease of use is brilliant.
  7. it's a bit harsh i think (the article that is). smells too much of a disgruntled ex-employee. to be a well-rounded article it needs more objectivity, give me the reasons/facts/stats/proof to support the points put forward. (loved how he used the clusterf@#k word - i've been using that ever since i first heard it in Heartbreak Ridge - it's been very apt for some of the managers/companies i have worked for)
  8. geez, it's only just bloddy come out !!! never knew MS thought that far ahead - i'm impressed. as to SP's, I install enough PC's with XP that, personally, I would love SP4 for XP as it would save me getting those 130'ish updates everytime. but i won't be too dissapointed and have resigned myself to whatever fate delivers. would love SP2 for w7 though (for the same reason - there's going to be enough people wanting w7 reloaded for the next couple of years)
  9. heard a nice adage once; "opinions are like armpits - everyone has them and thinks everyone elses stinks" i think this thread falls in there nicely somewhere. everybody is going to have his/her personal reasons for swinging one way or the other. don't think we'll get a definitive winner on win7 or win8 any time soon....
  10. personally, i don't think there is a difference to us mortals. but as far as MS is concerned, i think their logic would be mainstream = we better fix it lickity-split, extended = if enough people complain we'll get to it with the next SP. speaking of SP's and seeing those notes in your link login123, i think that's the main reason we'll never see SP4 for XP (but i hope they do a SP2 for W7) as it means they have to extend support for a further 2 years.
  11. just to get back on topic and answer the original point of the thread "is 7 more secure than 8?" surely the simple answer is Yes and No. Yes; because 7 is years old and had all the updates to plug any holes No; because those same updates should be pre-installed in 8 plus as Nergal stats in #18, 8 is the new 7. once you get past Metro it's so similar it's not funny. (but i've only been using 8 RC for about 6 months so not sure if they changed much in the final 8 release) just as they took huge swags of code from Vista to make 7, they have done the same with 7 to make 8. so if someone is reading this thread and trying to decide if 8 is worth the plunge, IMO it certainly wouldn't be a show-stopper if a new PC came pre-installed with 8. go for it!
  12. my money is with DennisD's suggestion - the HOSTS file. i've recently started using MVPS host file and have noticed it now blocks ad type boxes on some web sites. also, i usually have greater success using Firefox whenever IE has it's little hissy fits. a page that has issues with IF seems to have a much greater chance of working under FF (as for your particular you tube issue - make sure you get the latest flash updates for FF)

    could it be as simple as you or the PC just haven't done as much work as you have done previously when CC found more stuff to remove? keep using CC as you normally would and over the next few days/weeks, see if a pattern emerges.
  14. I didn't want to go off topic so thought i'd continue this in a new thread. originally started by Superfast; http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=37254&do=findComment&comment=225104 from the links to the MS info supplied therein, isn't Vista still supported, it's just out of the 5 year mainstream support and into the 5 year extended? and i seem to remember XP was dropped a while back but there was some sort of ground swell and MS resurrected it for 1000 days or something. so maybe (if i'm right) some developers still think XP is now unsupported or they haven't heard the news or simply are working off the normal MS 10 year life cycle.

    Robot fun

    looks like the love child of Voltron and Chewbacca
  16. i used to only have S&D and Ad-aware as my malware checkers than discovered MWB which seems to cover everything the others did. found it so good i paid for it to make it pro-active instead of reactive. haven't found any fault with it yet. stopped using ad-aware when they released their 2008 'anniversary' edition which ran like a dog. than stopped S&D when they went through a period where they didn't release updates a few years back.
  17. anyone know Mozilla's version numbering convention?. they seem to like to jump to a major release number when a minor increment would do - as far as the normal standard of versioning goes. went from 16 to a couple of minors .1 & .2, then straight to 17. which would normally indicate a major release - something new. at this rate they'll be up to version 40 in a few years
  18. looks like Event Horizon meets Avatar. (that's a good thing by the way)

    Ingress

    @hazelnut, checked out your link and watched the demo, actually looks like something different from the usual pack of first person or role playing lot. if i was into games more, i'd see me getting that one, just wish there was more time in the day. my monthly pc mag this month rated it very well.
  20. agreed - for me anyways. @TheWebAtom - seems not for everyone though @SuperFast - yeah, i went crazy and had a massive hissy-fit and did everything i could think of. new profile, reinstalled FF, updated all plugins and extensions, even blew away my Speed Dial extension thinking that was the cause. Nothing helped - nor would it have in hind sight if it was DNS based. but on a positive note, FF, IE and Opera all 100% Piriform happy !!! (3 or 4 days and counting)
  21. PatchCache has been around since XP and I believe it's used to store certain updates you get through Windows Updates. So although it can be deleted with seemingly no immediate effects, I think in the long term you may get Windows and other Microsoft problems (like with Office) when it comes to uninstalling/updating. a lot like those $NtUninstallKB files. in short, you could, but unless you really have to, leave them alone.
  22. @Willy2 - bugger off , that's a great avatar, i grew up with Shaun the Sheep and Wallace & Gromit. Nick Park is a genius. As with almost all English comedy - legendary !!! mind you Winapp2.ini has now got a scary one. (sorry - no more OT)
  23. i give up. at least on my PC, IE has almost 100% success rate compared to FF almost 100% fail rate in trying to connect to this forum. that suggests to me that it may be something particular to my setup. so with great regret and reluctance i'll stick to IE to access the forum (hopefully only as a short-term measure)
  24. Thanks Hazel - LOVE IT !!! (i'm still smiling) the Australian one should simply be CRIKEY MATE. I'm saving that link for future reference - good find (but i guess it really found you)
  25. hmmm, missed that little gem - sorry. but on reflection i still think getting the latest sound driver off the mobo manufactures site is worth a try. it's a straw worth clutching, if for no other reason than to cross it off the list of possibilities. (and SARTT, if you do want to try that, i would go to Control Panel, System, device Manager and Uninstall the current audio driver first)
