  1. what has always put me off about optimisers and accelators and that bunch of products is the underlying principle of why would any developer release a hobbled bit of software. surely they would want to make whatever they do, do it as fast as possible. and where they have somehow limited some action, there must be a 'for the greater good' reason behind it. well, that's what i've always hoped... as to the first point raised by Asphyxium i can see that preventing the pagefile from changing size but how does it prevent it from fragmenting?
  2. and here's me thinking it was as simple as some Webmaster publishing some poorly tested PHP code.
  3. i know it's off topic but i'm guessing that doesn't apply so much in The Lounge. But Hazel, from the first time you posted this thread, all the topic has brought to memory for me is the pigeon pie i had at The Ritz, London (are there any others ?) for my 20th wedding anniversary.
  4. While i disagree with SuperFast about not doing Windows Updates, from a historical point of view, he has a point. Back in the 98 days (yes, some of us are that old), you had a more than average chance that an update would cause more harm than good. It was not uncommon to simply turn the feature off. I believe keeping your PC update to date with the latest fixex, patches and improvements is important but on the flip side, i can see the school of thought "if it ain't broke don't fix it". But for those who don't do Windows Update - can I put this arguement to you? What else don't you update? I bet you still update CCleaner or Defraggler for example ! and you certainly update your AV. I'm always curious as to why we(humans) do one thing but not another and the logic behind our reasoning.

    INDEX.DAT file usage

@Andavari, can't say i've personally seen any issues, even in Help and Support, back when I had an XP PC. Your example maybe just limited to the offline files kept in OfflineCache. i rememeber something years ago about PCHEALTH being tied into MSINFO32, something about deleting the contents of \PCHEALTH then effecting how MSINFO32 works(or doesn't work), but I don't suffer that problem either when I delete all INDEX.DAT files.
  6. maybe a translation thing, perhaps 'childs play'. still doesn't make sense though
  7. Just after some feedback on what are other peoples perception of the uses/reasons with the INDEX.DAT file. I was under the impression it is used mainly(if not solely) by Internet Explorer to record the usually stuff like cookies, history, searches etc. In other words, they record stuff of little importance in the grand scheme of things. Add to that, if you never use IE or care about the info these files contain, I have never found a reason not to clean them from my PC's, or knowingly suffered a disadvantage in doing so. Just wondering if I have missed some point to these files ???
  8. ok, you've lost me. did we get a resolution to this or not, the editted stuff makes it hard to determine if a solution was found that we could put into CC. or was it hush-hush due to forum rules?
  9. can't say this has happened to me. i've upgraded via the Help/About method and the direct download from Mozilla method since about v4 and it's always kept my search provider on Google.
  10. Hazel, could you not use some virtual PC software to load Win8 onto and test drive? (sorry if that was off topic - please don't hurt me ) (ah, now i know what being ninja'd feels like) great minds think alike Alan_B
  11. doesn't seem too popular, CNET has 140 downloads in total, PassMark has last release 3 years ago. it's never accord to me to want to actually fragment a drive - even for testing purposes. it's always been easy enough to find 'real files' to test the effectiveness of defrag software !
  12. @keatah same as you, always stayed loyal having heard horror stories. about 6 months ago i finally stopped buying genuine Brother refills and got the clear plastic cartridges from China ($9AUS for the 4 colurs, delivered). splashed out and got good quality ink($20 per bottle for 250ml). works out real cheap. had no spills or cartridge recognition issues. only drama is the refill bung they supply to squirt the ink in to refill is the only air intake there is, so i have to pull out the bung every now and then (currently doing it once a week) to stop the things from vapour locking, otherwise the ink on the paper slowy fades away.
  13. definitely not imperative. i can vouch first hand having just installed my first SSD about 3 weeks ago on an old mobo that didn't have 6gig SATA ports(only 3gig) and i stupidly forgot to set AHCI before installing Win7 so I've missed the NCQ boost. the thing still rocks over the HDD but could be so much better.
  14. @SF couldn't agree more, you learn alot from experience - even more from mistakes. (i seem to have opened a spirited debate at least)
  15. once the W8 milestone is behind them, hopefully they'll direct their energies to a SP2 for W7, surely there is a big enough fan base that would benefit from not having to download those >100 updates since SP1 everytime a W7 PC is built. i can't see the business end of town embracing W8 anytime soon, so W7 will be their work-horse for the immediate future and beyond.
  16. thanks for the link Hazel, I was unaware MS had changed their auto defrag feature under W8
  17. are you running the latest version of CC? did you still have Internet Explorer open when you ran CC? i just did a test on my PC, index.dat there, ran CC, index.dat gone. i also have Include7=PATH|C:\|index.dat|RECURSE in ccleaner.ini
  18. don't forget Mr Fusion
  19. Struth !, they are even water cooled !!!
  20. i know the 'expert' advice is that you shouldn't defrag a SSD and they even add there is no need to. there's TRIM and wear leveling to also help spread the load over all the NAND chips (or whatever the current ones are using). and they say with the limited number of read/write cycles that a defrag, or any excessive I/O operation will shorten the life cycle of a SSD but i was wondering if anyone does defrag their SSD's. i assume their basic reasoning is that even a fragmented super fast drive will still be super fast and the small speed gain in defragging doesn't warrant the downside of shortening the life span.
  21. either DF is doing/including something Auslogic isn't or you have something on your PC that most people don't. as to the first, have you tried running DF with it excluding restore points and the hibernation file. also stop VSS. for the latter, try doing a DF from Safe Mode
  22. raw value is in Hex (base 16), real value is in Decimal (base 10)
  23. this is just an educated guess, but i'd would have said No, you can't defrag a database that is in production. which is why they have maintenace windows where they close the database, defrag, and restart. but i'm no expert on SQL so happy to be proven wrong.
  24. fingers crossed... as you say, time will tell. I know from using DF myself that your drive map 'regular patterns' is also something i've seen before, but from memory, it may have been before a DF (which you'd expect)
  25. another thought, go to Settings, Boot Time Defrag and select Run Once. but if your problem is just with $MFT, I'm not sure yet if Defraggler handles that file.
