  1. thanks for the heads-up. i hope a similar hole doesn't exist with SkyDrive !
  2. firstly get the latest v2.11 in the off-chance it performs differently. then run it with the Stop VSS when defragmenting NTFS volume and Use custom fragmentation settings ticked. in the latter go into Define and tick the boxes to exclude restore points and hibernation file. are any other programs running while you are defragging; browsers, AV background scan, windows updates?
  3. since joining this forum in mid-Sept, i have been using the system environmental variables in my cclenaer.ini without problem.
  4. just wondering if any of you have played with one of these little beauties yet? have been following their progress and now they have overcome the supply/demand backlog, i've decided to order one. thought i'd get some first hand advice if there is any available...
  5. login123, seems to me you have reached the 'suck it and see' stage. to go forward or not, that is the question. don't know if it's the male chromosome or just me, but bolding going forward will be the only way to get your dual boot, or find out the hard way, it wasn't worth the hassle !!! we learn best from our mistakes - looks like you know what to do, but just lack the courage. what's the worst that can happen? you may have to load XP and/or Win7 both a few times to get order right. (that'll be a few hours you'll never get back) press on i say... good luck.
  6. thank you hazel. DenisD making a post was good.
  7. there are threads for Which AV?, Which Firewall?, can I suggest a Which browser? (not sure if the voting structure is something only a Mod can do)
  8. 2008 !!! I can add AVG Firewall to the list but then noticed the threads age....
  9. having stumbled upon this thread, just thought i'd say thanks for the heads up on MVPS and the HOSTS updates. i love how one still can learn new things despite however long you have be playing with computers !!!
  10. i use Firefox in private browsing mode and with the box ticked to 'remember me', it doesn't between FF sessions. just the way i expect it to work, which is the reason you would use private browsing in the first place. but i do support the suggestion to have it not ticked as the default for the same reasons pwillener proposes...
  11. just a 'out of left field' suggestion. with 1 drive connected, install Win7 (think this is already done from factory) disconnect that drive, connect other and install XP (think you also are doing this and getting that BSOD) then connect both drives and each time you start the PC, go into BIOS settings and change the boot order to get the OS you are after for that session. i realise it's not an ideal solution, but a solution none the less, and at least short term, may be less stressful and give you your desired outcome.
  12. been using AVG for about 8years now. also been giving Avast a go a few times (on other test rigs in the house) and also find it excellant. had on more than 1 occasion I've installed AVG on someone's PC, ran a scan and had it detect an infection that the previously AV didn't, usually Norton's. used to be a Norton fan but found they got really bloated and needed too much grunt from the Pc to make it run smoothly. but i think they have streamlined their product alot now (they had too) they were losing to many customers and if these votes are any comparison to real life stats, it's reflected here too.
  13. you must have a decent rig i'm guessing. as a comparison, i've gone from a shutdown of 30secs on the old HDD to 10secs with the SSD and the 20-25secs startup is from the push of the power button to actually being able to type in Word, which i find quiet amazing.
  14. or to go even more 'old school', in the toolbars in Windows Explorer, there's File, Delete or Organize, Delete
  15. login123, this isn't so much help specifically but may lead you in the right direction. i did this years ago with Vista on HDD0 and i setup a dualboot to XP on HDD1. (so with Win7 and Vista being very similar in the boot departments, i'm assuming this Vista method can be transposed with Win7) from memory, the method went something like; installed XP to 2nd drive (but this screws up boot.ini stuff on 1st drive) insert Vista (in your case Win7) CD, reboot press any key to boot from CD when prompted choose Repair your Computer System Recovery Options Command Prompt >bootrec /fixmbr >bootrec /fixboot Exit and restart this now screws up the XP boot stuff so reboot the PC to Vista (or Win7) and install VistaBootPro, setup XP boot record copy boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect to XP drive and that got it going for me. now, i seem to recall somerhing about VistaBoot Pro also working for Win7 hope that helps or at least gets you moving on the right path. PS; the BSOD 0x7b error i've only seen when Windows has had too many hardware changes and needs to be reloaded
  16. i've had this 'lag' happen more than once myself. what should be the screen that shows the tick box to include chrome either takes ages or remains blank but the buttons on the bottom are there so you forget to untick the chrome box as it never appears and you Next onto the next screen and continue with the CC install. the only thing i've managed to figure out is it only occurs if the PC is unusually busy. this is the case as I have had the PC's doing other maintenance operations. If the CC install is the only thing running, i've never had the 'lag' issue.

    SpeedUpMyPC

if i remember correctly, i think it tells you all the fantasic things it could do to your PC but to actually do them requires buying the software.
  18. having just got my first SSD about 2 weeks ago, mainly due to the latest price drop and the fact i was due a 'windows refresh', i have to say, so far so good. sadly my mobo only has 3gb/s sata port, so i'm losing the 6gb/s potential but still getting 20-25secs startups and 10secs flat shutdowns. Apps start almost instantaneously. i've always had a question mark over their longevity (Keatah; you mention the 700 writes TLC chip lifespan) so i shall see...

    Adobe Reader

my method to delete stubborn folders in Win7 (same theory in earlier OS's but the keystrokes change obviously). right click the folder select Properties click the Security tab click Edit... then Add... in Enter the object names to select type Everyone and click OK that'll take you back to the previous window, now click the Full control box and hit OK now click Advanced on the Permissions tab, click Change Permissions tick Replace all child oject permissions with inheritable permissions from the object clcik OK and Yes to Do you wish to Continue? now go to the Auditing tab and click Continue click Add type in Everyone, hit OK tick Full control and OK tick Replace all existing....... and OK now go to the Owner tab Edit... Other users or groups... type Everyone, OK select Everyone in the Change Owner to: box tick Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and OK hit OK to the WIndows Security Alert popup. and lastly, go to the Effective Permissions tab click Select type Everyone, OK click OK again then OK again on the last box and that should be it One or more of those steps may not be required but I know if I follow all of them that I can delete a folder that previously gave me the you can't do that message. hope that helps.

    Firefox Problem

install the latest Firefox, force a cache update (ctrl+f5) and see if that helps
  21. in the meantime, it'll be the earlier up-takers of the technology who will make it better for the rest to follow...
  22. KISS principle is my preference. Look what happended to Office 2007/2010 and that bloody ribbon. Another example is AVG 2013, what was wrong with the previous layout/design ?. Whatever happened to if it ain't broke, don't fix it... off topic: i've read that MS have stopped calling it Metro now due to some legal infringment with some other trademarked name. (upon reflection maybe that was what Winapp was referring to)
  23. +1 babylon support, very comprehensive removal help. I was just going to say to uninstall the toolbar from Programs & Features, but hey, to be sure, to be sure. whenever i see this toolbar, it gets removed straight away.
  24. does CC treat CustomLocationX different to IncludeX in regard to having a dot in a folder name? i have Include1=PATH|%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\|*.*|RECURSE in my ccleaner.ini and it analyses and cleans fine.
