  1. They make money by accepting donations in $20 / ?20 / 20 Euro increments at the download page. Richard S.
  2. Hiding and unhiding desktop icons is a feature of Windows Explorer which can be access via the right click menu on the desktop. Since you're unable to access this pop-up menu then I can only assume something has gone wrong with the registry settings for Explorer. The solution for this would be to either to use the System Restore or patch the system registry with the correct keys. For patching simply login as another user by enabling guest or creating a new user account. Run regedit.exe and navigate to the following: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer export this to a registry file e.g. c:\fix.reg logout and login to your problem account then import registry keys with regedit or double click on c:\fix.reg To make Explorer accept the new keys use Windows Task Manger, kill explorer.exe and run explorer.exe Richard S.
  3. This is indeed very strange but I'm not entirely sure if is possible to point the finger directly at Defraggler. If icons had been deleted from the desktop this would have happened instantaneous and not after a reboot of Windows. Richard S.
  4. I wonder if they're taken into account false positives as well as good detection rates. Richard S.
  5. I've never seen the appeal in downloading movies either you're better off putting your money towards an audio/video rental shop. Why run the risk of being caught downloading copyrighted content by the RIAA/MPAA just rent, rip and burn instead. (note that ripping copyrighted material is illegal in most counties and cannot be condoned) Richard S.
  6. If you still having trouble LuLu, Start, Run, services.msc Find all the McAfee services in the list, edit their properties setting "Startup type" to Disabled and then reboot Windows. Richard S.
  7. I got curious about this virus business so I bought one from Amazon for 4 quid which is not bad considering I get free delivery and 2 x 900mAh AAA batteries thrown in. I was hoping they provided a mini CD but apparently the software used in conjunction with the USB device must be downloaded from their homepage: http://www.energizerrecharge.eu/en/range/chargers/usb I suppose this was a smart move on their part although considering it's 3 years old it kind of worrying just how many people have actually took the trouble to download and install the software with the malware infection. The software has now been pulled (although wayback machine still has copies) as stated here - http://www.energizer.com/usbcharger/download/March_8_2010_USB_Release__3_.pdf Richard S.
  8. It appears McAfee have their own removal tool **direct download link removed** Give it a go and see if that helps. (using download link from Google search) Richard S.
  9. To uninstall McAfee start Control Panel and double click on Add or Remove Programs. In the list you should see something like McAfee SecurityCenter and simply hit remove and follow any instructions. I guess it depends on how the wireless router is setup some have what's called Mac Address filtering so you need to verify that your adapter is registered. To check the wireless connection Start, Run cmd.exe and then type the following command: ipconfig /all This should produce a list of IP numbers and other useful data. Note that the Mac Address if you need to enter this into the router is hex data shown as "Physical Address" To access the router locate the IP address for "Default Gateway" and open this in Internet Explorer http://192.168.1.1 (as an example) Also try to ping the GateWay IP address e.g. ping 192.168.1.1 to see if you can send packets to the router. I assume you mean mouse pointer?? this could be a sensitivity setting and you need to lower it because it thinks it's being touched when it's not. If you still have problems with the touch pad get a optical mouse or perhaps a wireless one like a Logitech. Richard S.
  10. I'm a little disappointed that after 4 updates of this software and 4 times I have mentioned about the AGP speed bug this simple mistake still hasn't been resolved. As I have stated before my NVIDIA 6200 card is AGP 8x capable but my motherboard only supports AGP 4x. Speccy reports 256x which is technically impossible because there has never been an AGP port designed to run at that speed. Also my internal memory is 1.25GB of RAM Speecy incorrectly rounds this off to 1.3GB. Question: does Mr G or Mr T actually read the bug reports or not because I feel like I'm wasting my time with this program?? Richard S.
  11. So everyone will be on super fast cable but don't most servers cap commination speeds anyway?? To be honest anything over 10 megs isn't worth it unless you're using limewire or e-mule. Richard S.
  12. If you cannot figure out how to download CCleaner it's just as well you're not running it. Richard S.
  13. If I recall correctly PayPal has procedures for reimbursing money up a certain amount if a purchased made was unsatisfactory or obtained by fraud / deception. Richard S.
  14. I've never heard of damage caused by defragging since Windows knows the files have been moved and will compensate accordingly. There is however a possibility that habitually moving files around if the drive is dying or suffers from high ECC errors then this could lead to disk corruption. As for SVI is normally not accessible because it's probably interference either by user or virus could cause the System Restore function to malfunction. Richard S.
  15. I've clicked on the PayPal button at the download page and it takes me to the payment page ($20/?20/20Euros) so I have no explanation for your problem. Richard S.
  16. I actually think the Windows defragging tool is fairly good the problem is you cannot select individual files or folders to defrag. Defragging in Windows is done by moving files from one location to another, for this to be success you will need contiguous free space to accommodate the files. A file system running low on disk space isn't good, therefore clearing out the browser cache, temporary files and recycle bin would help. Also some files / folders are locked by the Operating System and cannot be touched such as c:\pagefile.sys and "C:\System Volume Information\" (System Restore). You can purge SVI by disabling and enabling the System Restore and using PageDefrag (but you much disable UAC to install it). Richard S.
  17. It sounds like you have bad sectors, to confirm this check the event logs (eventvwr.exe) and look for "bad block" errors. If you want further confirmation then try the freeware disk utility MHDD and scan your drive or repair patch out bad sectors at the same time. Richard S.

Defraggler uses the Windows API to defrag the file system so the only requirement is you're running 2K/XP/Vista/Windows 7 with administrator rights. Richard S.
  19. This isn't the first time someone reported Recuva failing to find files using deep scan on a format drive. Not sure what the problem is but I tested an old 32MB Smart Media card with some jpgs saved to it. I formatted the drive as fat and as ntfs Recuva had no problems locating the jpgs. I've found a freeware tool which appears to have located my deleted files but I'm less that impressed with the interface. Also you must register your email address to get a license key to enable recovery (probably best use hotmail for that). http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/smartrecovery.html On first run click the "About" button to register the program and to enter the license key first. Now click back to "Scan", select "Advanced Scan" and untick the drives you do not wish to scan for files. Hit "Start Scan" and let it locate all the files, the rest should be pretty self-explanatory. Richard S.
  20. Leftovers?? Some files and folders cannot be defragged because they're protected by the Operating System such as, c:\pagefile.sys and "C:\System Volume Information" Richard S.
  21. Microsoft need to sell more copies of Vista / Windows 7 so dropping support for 2k/XP would probably create an incentive for the no so computer minded to spend more cash. Richard S.
  22. Unlikely, SMS information would be held on the sim card or phone's internal memory which is not accessible. Richard S.
  23. Well I understand that every OS has it's own flaws but just how many of these exploits for Linux would lead to root access and the installation of malicious code to auto start? I must admit it's something I haven't really looked into but I always felt Linux has the advantage of making malware harder to code being non standardised (different distros) whereas Windows is more common. Richard S.
  24. It's funny how these exploits lately seems to related to Windows Operating System, I wonder if any exploits exist for Linux?? Richard S.
