    CCleaner issues

I'm a little confused by your post, you said you have 2 different versions of Internet Explorer on the same machine as far as I'm aware thats not technically possible. What version of Windows are you running?? Also why keep IE 5.0 this is old buggy crap that it's likely to get your machine infected with malware unless you're running the 16bit version for Windows 3.11 As for CCleaner I have no idea what it will do to your browsers' history or cache files you could try running it to and see what happens. To find out when CCleaner had been installed go to "My Computer", "Local Disk (C:)", "Program Files" look for the folder CCleaner, right click select "Properties" and check the created date. 2. Dead video signal, I guess your graphics card didn't take to kindly to Speccy's probing. What graphics card do you have?? Richard S.
  3. Some suggestions for Defraggler - Allow pagefile.sys file to be defragged if this file isn't locked i.e. running from BartPE or from a dual boot of XP - currently Defraggler is programmed not to touch it. - Add option to create a log report i.e. fragmentation statistics and all processed files. - Detect problems with the file system and warn users to run chkdsk /r to avoid a possible program crash. Richard S.
  4. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/11/fi...on_false_alarm/ - oops Richard S.
  5. I've not heard of Olympus Master 2 but it's possible this program use the temporary folder (%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp) to store your photos. I would recommend you download Recuva, set the filter box to "Pictures" and then scan your entire hard drive for lost images. Richard S.
  6. Google cache may help, I would suggest you hurry before they purge their files. You need to paste the exact URL of your blog links into Google's search box then hit the "cache" link. You've posted a handful of direct links to this forum so finding them shouldn't be too hard (or the copy the links inside your blog page). e.g. I seached for: http://icedrakesblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/piriform-software.html cache link = http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:eTUsJ0A...=clnk&gl=uk I hope you recover/backup most of your lost posts. Richard S.
  7. I'm not entirely sure what you're recovering files of 3-4kb are very small for jpegs and would only be suitable for thumbnail images. If these images were part of a larger set then I can only assume some application had created the thumbnails probably for quick previewing. Richard S.
  8. I've had no experience with spanned hard drives however if it's part of multiple drives then I'm guessing it can only be defragged in this configuration. Richard S.
  9. I have some suggestions for Recuva: - put "View Mode" options on the main window rather than just in "Options", "General" sometimes it's nice to switch between modes quickly. - while previewing images add option to right click "copy to clipboard" the entire image (the same way as Firefox) - add filter options so useless unrecoverable files are never listed or included as thumbnails. - discard corrupted image files claimed as excellent they're technically damaged and should be labelled as so. - do not include corrupted image files as thumbnails they're never going to be visible anyway. - discard images files that have been simply moved to another location because they're not really deleted files. - when typing in the filter box delay sorting the file list until typing stops after a few seconds (it makes Recuva run sluggish otherwise) - date creation / date deletion and filesize filters to help locate specific files of interest. - allow user definable file format headers or text search patterns so that "Deep Scan" may locate and recover lost data. - allow files to be search if partition table is damaged / over written - currently Recuva will not "Deep Scan" under these conditions. - rename deleted file names that are unrecoverable or when performing secure overwriting - leaving filenames unchanged can be just as incriminating as the files that had just been destroyed. Richard S.
  10. Go to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and download the latest version of PE Builder Run PE builder it will then ask you to locate an XP install CD because it needs to extract certain files from it. After the process is complete it creates an ISO file you just simply burn this as an image file (do not burn as a file) using suitable software such as Nero. Richard S.
  11. I don't have a Vista machine in front of me but under XP you could customise your desktop via Display properties to add remove icons related to: My Computer, My Documents etc. Internet Explorer should be also one of them options. Richard S.
  12. BartPE is basically a bootable copy of Windows on a CD which allows you run basic applications with LAN networking and USB flash drive support. It's designed as a maintenance tool, e.g. fixing file system errors, defragging files which would have been locked by the OS e.g pagefile.sys, editing the System Registry or for crippling malware (delete / rename). To create a BartPE image you will need an XP install CD with at least SP1 or Windows 2003. Alternatively there's Hiren's Tools "Mini XP" which provides similar functionality to BartPE and available for download as pre-complied ISO. Richard S.
  13. I have a hard drive install of BartPE which beats the Recovery Console hands down in my opinion. While on the subject of recovery tools a copy of BartPE / Hiren's Tools on CD is highly recommend, this can help you fix file system errors, cleaning/crippling malware or for backup/restoring an Operating System. Richard S.
  14. You probably need to untick "Sun Java" in the "Applications" tab at the top before you "Run Cleaner". Richard S.
  15. It's probably been mentioned before but it would be handy if you could right click over the tick boxes and have the option to select all or select none (to save time). Richard S.
  16. Look at the "File List" tab not the fragmentation statistics this can be misleading because some folders containing files are not accessible to the user such as "C:\System Volume Information" (system restore folder). Richard S.
  17. Which application are you referring too?? Richard S.
  18. You cannot defrag c:\pagefile.sys because it's locked by the Operating System you will need to use a boot cd like BartPE to gain exclusive access to the file or alternative run Sysinternals PageDefrag (once only). Even if you could run Defraggler under BartPE it's coded not to touch c:\pagefile.sys (still unsure why though) however to remove this limitation you need to edit Defraggler.exe and modify the unicode string "pagefile.sys" stored twice. Alternative you could use Sysinternals Contig running under BartPE to defrag pagefile.sys which is just as effective. Richard S.
  19. You cannot run an application with admin credentials without the use of the local Administrator password if that was possible all hell would break loose. So you don't have many options which I can see being: - provide the user with the local admin password and trust he won't abuse the system. - create a limited user account with special permissions that would allow Defraggler to run correctly - at the request of the user the IT department could launch Defraggler remotely with administrator credentials using Sysinternals PsExec the only thing is some applications may not appear on the desktop if executed in this manner so it's unclear if this would work. The other thing to consider when running applications with admin credentials if it was used to launch another process (via file open/save dialog box) this would inherit the parent status and thus run with admin status too, unfortunately Defraggler has the potential to be exploited this way. If your user has a specific file or folder he would like to defrag then perhaps using PsExec with Sysinternals Contig console defrag tool would be more appropriate. Richard S.
  20. Sandboxie uses temporary storage which needs purging periodically so it would not be wise use an email client if you wish to retain newly received mail. If however you have a suspicious message or attachment then sandboxie would be useful for inspecting in this situation. Richard S.
  21. I used to enjoy listening to pop/rock music but as time had gone by I just got fed up listening to this repeated rubbish on the radio. Maybe it's just me but I feel today's music is very dull and uninspiring even old tracks are being recycled because artists have nothing better to write. I guess techno/progress trance/goa trance is not everyone's thing but I just love it, it's timeless and always puts me in a good mood. Currently playing: Alt+F4 - Alt+F4 [Original Mix] Richard S.

    Boot Manager

Your best bet is to put XP on one of your spare hard drives however you must be careful not to corrupt the Windows 7 drive by making the mistake of overwriting it with XP boot loader. So to be on the safe side I would temporally disconnect the Windows 7 hard drive until you have competed the XP installation. To dual boot you have 2 possibilities: a) change the drive booting order inside the BIOS setup b) add XP to Windows 7 boot menu using bcdedit. Installing XP with bcedit can be a little tricky however there is a freeware tool called EasyBCD which simplifies the process. Make sure you download EasyBCD 2.0.0.77 beta there appears to be a bug in previous versions - http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5511 Richard S.
  23. You cannot defrag a file system unless the partition has been assigned a drive letter. Is there a reason why you do not have a drive letter?? Richard S.
  24. No but Defraggler is more than happy to run under BartPE, however it will not process c:\pagefile.sys it's been coded not to touch this file unless you patch the executable. Richard S.

    Recovery error

What kind of drive are you recovering from i.e. SATA, PATA or USB?? Also could you run Recuva with /debug and upload the log file while you're attempting to recover your files. Richard S.
