  1. I know this sounds like a weird question but does anyone know of a well established electronics store in Japan that provides international shipping?? There is something I want to buy that's only available from amazon.jp not amazon.co.uk but apparently they're unable to ship certain items such as electrical goods. I'm not sure if this is some kind of legal issue in Japan with regards to exports of goods but it's kind of annoying. Richard S.
  2. Here is an extract from the Licence Agreement, I think it's pretty much self-explanatory: For what it's worth programs like Recuva and Defraggler are pretty much as good as they can get so I doubt you'll be missing much. Liberkey seems to be nothing more than a glorified task starter so you should be able to manually update the program files without any problems. Richard S.
  3. C:\System Volume Information\ belong to the System Restore feature of Windows, these files are not usually accessible to applications (unless you tweak folder permissions). Turn off, then turn on the System Restore should empty these files automatically. Richard S.
  4. I hate to break the news to you but Piriform software doesn't charge money for their software it's entirely free to download and use. If this was an Ebay purchase I would suggest to file a complaint to Ebay and get this user suspended from the site. As for the software problem no idea but since it's on your computer just open "My Computer", "Local Disk C:", "Program Files", "Ccleaner" and copy ccleaner.exe to a flash drive or how you prefer to copy it to your wife's computer. I use to like VirusTotal and similar sites but lately they seem to be better for telling b/s than actually something credible. For example I packet a Windows XP executable with UPX and uploaded it to VirusTotal, wow instead Trojan huh?? I can certainly sympathise with Nirsoft and Cedrick's problems I'm getting a little fed up of these big name companies and script kiddie so call security experts dishing out unreliable information. Richard S.
  6. So I guess they don't make fan's hardware controlled anymore that kind of sucks?? I'm not sure if I like the sound of software controlled fans like what if my graphics card driver crashed overnight I could be waking up with a dead GPU the next day. :\ Anyway even if the software is buggy it always a good idea to constantly monitor the temperature of your hardware anyway so in the event of a heating problem you can shutdown and let it cool down. Richard S.
  7. I like it how they use the phrase "untrusted Web sites" I guess they're referring to porn sites and places to download illegally cracked commercial software right?? There are still 3 things you can do: a) run Opera inside a guest account that way even if the exploit was used it would be self-contained inside the account. b) use SandboxIE and launch Opera as a sandboxed process. c) bite the bullet and install Mozilla Firefox. Richard S.
  8. I don't think there's any problem with the way Recuva works in terms of recovering files I think all programs use the same method it's finding the start of the lost cluster that's the key. The problem is files that get deleted are not always recoverable because they could be instantly overwritten by another file or the cluster information for the file gets damaged making them appear to be overwritten. I made the mistake of deleting an mp3 file on a non-OS drive and before I did anything else I fired up Recuva to recover it. Unfortunately the file had part of the clusters allocated to another mp3 file which I thought was slightly odd considering it was at least 3 years old and had never been touched. So I tried 2 other recovery programs and again the same problem the file was damaged and unrecoverable just as Recuva had already indicated. Richard S.
  9. Just out of curiosity if you select the "File list" tab and then click on the red or blue dots does it tell you the filename?? Richard S.
  10. It works fine for me, the problem is your machine doesn't treat the "www." prefix as a web address it considers them as filenames. If you try "Start", "Run" "www.piriform.com" you get the same error, however on a working machine it should load the default web browser. Richard S.
  11. I think in all fairness most mp3 players are flash based drives with a few exceptions such as Apple and iRiver perhaps (although iRiver do provide firmware updates to make them UMS complaint). If you still need an iPod replacement then perhaps the Cowon iAudio D2 media player with SDHC support would suit your needs. Plenty on amazon to choose from just avoid the ones with built-in DAB they suffer from poor reception apparently. Richard S.
  12. Just as well I don't have any fans on my nVidia card. So what's the problem exactly, are they cooking the GPU making the fans work overtime?? Richard S.
  13. I think you have some serious issues regarding your hard drive it sounds like it's on the way out. I don't think registry corruption is the problem here it seems like some important files are missing or corrupted or unreadable. Are you using a SATA drive, you're probably missing the RAID drivers?? Registry files are in \windows\system32\config HKCUs are stored in \documents & settings\(username)\NTUSER.DAT (hidden file) Backup registry copies are in \System Volume Information\ .. RP???\SNAPSHOT\ (but inaccessible without changing security permissions) Backup copies of OS files are in \windows\system32\dllcache Now that you have the hard drive working on another machine there are two things you could do: 1) check the S.M.A.R.T status (looking at the sector relocate count for errors) - HD Tune should be able to help you with this. 2) Open a DOS prompt with "Start", "Run" cmd.exe and type the following: chkdsk e: /f /r (assuming that e: is your faulty hard drive) chkdsk /r will force windows to scan and mark faulty sectors as bad so that they're never used again by the Operating System. Make yourself a cup of coffee because this process could take over an hour or so depending on drive size and number of bad sectors. Once the scan has completed return the hard drive to the original machine and see if it can boot up now. If you're still having blue screen problems then a repair install is looking the only viable solution. Richard S.
  14. Well I had to check Ebay just to be sure and yes it appears someone is selling Ccleaner on there. Richard S.
  15. try "Start", "Run" shutdown -f -s -t 0 Richard S.
  16. I suspect that defragging 3 drives at the same time would not be any faster than doing them one at a time Since data must be transferred via SATA or IDE you're limited to the maximum throughput of the interface. With 3 drives defragging all at once I would image the data would be bottlenecked by the controller. Richard S.
  17. I can't answer for fat32 (although it's never been a problem for me) NTFS keeps track of data created or moved thus if your computer shuts down or reboots your file system should not suffer any ill effects. Richard S.
  18. Recuva considers deleted files with no overwritten clusters to be recoverable, however it doesn't always mean the file is still readable I would suggest you secure delete a folder full of jpgs and see if you can still view the thumbnails. If you still having problems then try Eraser it claims to support Windows 7 and can also be used to clean deleted file entries. (Tip: when you create a task for erasing "unused disk space" untick "Erase cluster tips" to speed up the erasing process) Richard S.
  19. There's no way to detect capabilities of a particular motherboard (unless it was already known) it can only detect what hardware is presently active. Richard S.
  20. As far as I understand Piriform only bundles their software with the optional Yahoo Toolbar not the Ask Toolbar. Richard S.
  21. Windows caches icon data to a file called IconCache.db it's very possible the database got corrupted. To fix the problem you need to delete this (hidden) file and Windows will recreate it with a new one. For XP go to: "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\" For Vista/Win7: "%userprofile%"\AppData\Local\" Richard S.
  22. Too busy with FarmVille. Richard S.
  23. System Restore perhaps?? Richard S.
  24. As you've probably noticed a 1/40 match isn't exactly an overwhelming result so I think you'll find it's a false positive. Virustotal uses a detection method called heuristics which I'm sorry to say is frankly overkill and rather unreliable. Richard S.
  25. I use photobucket, it's never been a problem until they decided to only show the fist 100 images of my album denying me the rest for viewing. I suppose it's a incentive to pay and Go Pro, all I can say to that is _|_ Richard S.
