  1. My suggestion would be instead of hitting the "Defrag" button go to the "File List" tab first and have a look at the files that are fragmented to get a better understand of what's involved. Now click the "Size" column to sort in size order then select all the fragmented files that are 50,000KB or less and defrag these to start with. Still notice a slow defragging problem?? Next look at the list of big files and if you have some in the excess of 500,000KB or over then I personally wouldn't touch them unless you need them to be contiguous. Defragging big files will take time because it's connected to the USB port which is much slower when compared to like a SATA/IDE. To answer the query about interrupted defragging, no you do not lose data because the file system will only commit changes only to files that have been fully moved. Richard S.
  2. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the statistical data the "File List" is more important because that tells you what's fragmented. As Aethec said the System Restore could have kicked in during your run of Defraggler so although it ended at 0% fragmented it wasn't. Richard S.
  3. I hate to break the news but the file is not recoverable it appears to contain data of another image from your memory card. When using Recuva was the file status: "Excellent", "Poor" or "Unrecoverable" ?? Richard S.
  4. What do you mean by standalone?? when speccy is installed it exists as a single executable in c:\program files\speccy Richard S.
  5. Preview isn't the same as looking at the main image because some jpgs can contain embedded preview data. If the file you've extracted is corrupted then that's how it will look unfortunately. Did you use Recuva straight after the deletion or did you take more photos?? Richard S.

  7. If the partition table is damaged or missing then Recuva cannot recover files although I think it should be coded to handle hard drives in such situations. I had a similar problem with a damaged flash drive Recuva wouldn't go as far as deep scan my drive and all of the freeware recovery programs I've tried had failed. The only tool I had success with was DiskInternals Partition Recovery but it's commercial and the demo version only allows file previews, however it does gives you some idea just how much data can be recovered if any. There is another program called "Roadkil's Boot Build" - http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=26869 it can be used to write a new partition table however since I haven't used it and cannot comment on it's effectiveness. Richard S.
  8. Why don't you install Firefox and skin it like IE with the Yahoo Toolbar, she probably wouldn't even notice the difference. Richard S.
  9. An "Unmountable_Boot_Disk" error means you have a corrupted file system, you must run chkdsk from the Recovery Console via an XP install CD or via a boot CD such as BartPE. Richard S.
  10. I've encountered similar behaviour using Tune Up Utilities' registry cleaner so I don't think it's that unusual. Registry errors are usually detected because a key refers to another key that's missing, points to invalid data or missing files. The system registry depending where you look can be quite a labyrinth that is registry keys points to other keys that again points more keys. So what I suspect CCleaner is doing is finding invalid keys and removing them but in doing so invalidates more registry keys which are detected on a re-run. Richard S.
  11. Does using an earlier version of Recuva yeld different results?? Richard S.
  12. I must say I do find this hotfix rather odd I though card readers are treated the same like flash drives and as far as I'm aware flash drives had never had a capacity limit problem in Windows XP. Richard S.
  13. If this file was so important to Acronis then it's "their responsibility" to lock it and prevent access by any defragging tool not just Defraggler. Richard S.
  14. You cannot recover deleted files from a network drive you will need to contact the network administrator and ask them to recover it. Richard S.
  15. It's a very strange problem, you said you can see the welcome screen therefore I can only assume the display drivers are working. Why you're getting a black screen is a bit of a mystery it's possible your using a video resolution or refresh rate which is incompatible with your monitor. My suggestion would be to install the video drivers you believe to be correct, reboot Vista hit F8 just after the HP screen and then select boot VGA mode using "low resolution mode". This will override your current settings allowing you to set a refresh and resolution of your choice i.e. 1024x768 @ 60Hz. If further black screen problems occur check your event logs (eventvwr.exe) for anything which might provide some clues. Richard S.
  16. I'm having crumpets with melted cheese right now. Richard S.
  17. Metallica S&M with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra - probably one of the best live CDs I have in my collection. - is currently looking outside his window at all the snow wondering what ever happened to global warming?? Richard S.
  18. I have to say this is the first time I've heard of SDHC cards being a OS problem I thought this limitation was due to the firmware of the card reader?? My parents own a Lumix digital camera with a 4GB SDHC card they had no problems transferring files to an XP SP2 machine with the supplied USB lead. If you want something really dirt cheap then try PoundLand they have certified USB 2.0 SDHC card readers for a ?1.00 It should be noted that stuff in PoundLand claiming to be USB 2.0 can be a bit iffy so if you find file copying halts or the hardware restarts you must use a USB 1.1 port. avi to dvd

Some DVD players can play media files from a file system i.e. mpeg-1, mpeg-2 DivX or mpeg-4 so it's not always necessary to create a compliant DVD which can be rather time consuming. As for the freeware media encoders 99% of them use ffmpeg anyway so recommending another one would be a little pointless however WinFF suits my needs with a simple interface. Programs that use ffmpeg - http://www.ffmpeg.org/projects.html The ones you should avoid (they're crooks) - http://www.ffmpeg.org/shame.html Richard S.
  20. I made a very tasty grilled bacon sandwich for lunch today Richard S.
  21. Unfortunately they are not many tools that can recover from drives with damaged partition data I had similar problem with my flash drive got corrupted by a dodgy card reader. The only tool I've had success with is DiskInternals Partition Recovery but at $140 for personal license it's not exactly what I would call cheap but their demo will let you preview files without coping anyway. Richard S.
  22. You could give it a try however I suspect it will not. Richard S.
  23. Speccy still reports my system as having an AGP port and graphics card running at 256x speed. My intel 845 chipset motherboard supports up to 4x speed my NVIDIA 6200 support up to 8x speed. This is the third update of Speccy since I reported the problem last year will this glitch get fixed?? Richard S.
  24. Solid state drives do not need defragging because there is no delay associated with fragmented files, furthermore because flash memory has limited write cycles you should avoid excessive writing. I'm not sure excluding SSDs from Defraggler is such a good idea in the end of the day if the owner wants to defrag their drive then it's their choice. Richard S.
  25. AGP port speed still showing 256x not 4x Richard S.
