  1. Hello kensync, Please follow the advice given by both hazelnut and Augeas . If you are asking questions about these options it is time for you to do some research before trying any of them.Make sure you understand what they do. Here are links explaining two of them. You "search" the forum or Google for the others. Using these Advanced options do not give you back much space at all. They are just options made available for those who know what they are doing. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=97734 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=97846 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=97342 Now, you get to work. You get the idea.If you don't plan to be a "techie" then I advise you to leave these options alone. Good Luck, davey P.S. Your Dad has trained you to be careful and think and study and ask questions. So always follow what Dad says.I hope you got your "chess game" .And of course, you should always come back and ask more questions to make sure you have the right idea before trying some of these options. We just want to make sure users do their homework before trying some Advanced options and tools.
  2. Only way I know of is to attempt "secure delete" in Recuva. It will come back saying it couldn't because it is in the MFT. Augeas may have another method.
  3. Hi Tarq57, Thanks again for taking the time to do testing. As regards these "preview" files how many end up in the MFT? All of them and they are recoverable?Viewable? Some of them and the others not in the MFT are unrecoverable?Viewable? davey
  4. Hello StupidPieceOfBleep, You seem to be a pretty knowledgeable PC user and I can understand your frustration. I suggest that you make at least one more options change. In Options > Settings I would immediately turn off the option Run CCleaner when the computer starts. By having this option on, every time you reboot the Cleaner function will automatically run using the last settings that were set at the close of the previous run of CCleaner. Bookmark this link to the Guide. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=1504 Good Luck, davey
  5. Hello picimako, First thing is to do a Reboot. There maybe some new software that needs to be loaded. Then try CCleaner again. If that doesn't work when the ERROR dialog box appears again click Report button in the error dialog box to save a Report. Send that Report to us plus answer these questions, please. These answers helps evaluate your problem.Just fill in answers next to questions? CCleaner version ? OS and version ? Browsers and ver.? Security software and ver? Provide a list of your Applications tab. Other data you think might be relevant? What did you do and then what happened? Thanks, davey

  7. Hi whs, Looks like you have done everything correctly. Even down to testing the recovered files. You may already be using this link but just in case here's a good explanation about Recuva by one of the development team. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=95389 Welcome to the forum. davey P.S. There are very experienced Recuva uses and testers that may be able to tell you how to make those recovered files usable. Many things can happen to a file after it is deleted.
  8. Hello JohnBurns, I think your solution is the same as ColTom2 as in the immediate prior post in this thread. Best Wishes, davey
  9. Hello ColTom2, I don't think we have a CCleaner bug here. What we have is a timing conflict. When you run your Windows Defender scan versus when you run CCleaner is causing your situation. As you have reported in previous posts, you have to turn off the option to clean Windows Defender so that you can review the latest scan results. You either have to change your Windows Defender scan schedule or the CCleaner schedule or leave the option off anf turn it on on once in a while run a CCleaner then turn it back off. This is the only solution I can see for your situation. Best Wishes, davey
  10. Hello xerowest, A desktop.ini is a file.It may still exist. It may be gone. If you Merge your .reg files from Registry "cleaning" you may restore the path to that file. Just be sure to Merge the files in the reverse order they were created. That is the latest one 1ST,the one prior to that 2nd and so on. Good Luck, davey To actually do the restore look in My Documents and you will find .reg files created by CCleaner. They will have names like this cc_20080221_1419.reg . Right click on the newest one and select Merge .You will be asked do you want to update the registry and reply yes. Do this for each .reg file you want to restore. Back up your Registry first. I recommend the following. ERUNT is the best thing going for Registry Backup and Emergency Recovery. If you don't have it, install it NOW!!! Later will be too late. It only takes a few minutes to install and use. It's that IMPORTANT and that SIMPLE. A good backup SAVES MONEY, TIME and STRESS. Use of CCleaner Cleaner function, ERUNT, NTREGOPT ,and Windows Disk Defragmenter program is sufficient to maintain most users PC's. ERUNT and NTREGOPT are valuable programs for all users. This link is to the authors website. It is safe. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm Read all the links there when you have the time. To install just click on SERVER1,2, or 3 on the left side. This installs a complete package. When you install it, use all the "default" settings and locations. Also select AUTOBACKUP for ERUNT. Weird names but invaluable programs. NTREGOPT NT Registry Optimizer Registry Optimization for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista ERUNT works for all versions of Windows even 64-bit. YES, ERUNT has saved me in the past and will probably in the future also.

    prefetch

Any prefetch options set now or then? If you set it on purpose or accidentally, I would turn it off and don't worry about Prefetch files.Windows cleans them out automatically.CCleaner may list them if you set the option but may not delete them since Windows takes care of them. Any Registry clean last time? Proper date and time in your PC?Now and for last 2 weeks? Does prefetch data relate to anything not used or removed in approx. 14 day period ? You report "many" prefetch items. How many? All Apps. ? None is normal for me.How many normal for you?

Hi J. Holloway, These answers helps evaluate your problem.Just fill in answers below questions? CCleaner version ? OS and version ? Browsers and ver.? Security software and ver? Other data you think might be relevant? What did you do and then what happened? Thanks, davey
  13. Understood about the C++ update. However a reboot is in order before the next time you run CCleaner. There seems to have been some confusion about my prior instructions. Let me clarify the matter. If the error dialog box appears again when running CCleaner, select the Report Button in the error box to capture a Report. This report can be used by the "bug" fixers. davey
  14. Can you apply this C++ update and try again. This is the first virtual address error I have seen reported for this version. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en C++ WinXP P.S. Also make sure to reboot so new software will be loaded. P.S.S. How long did the Analysis take? I forgot to ask earlier. 5.78 Gigs of cleaning!!! Is that an accurate figure?
  15. Hello ralliart12, Please put your answers next to the questions. Have you run the CCleaner v2.05.555 before this? Have you used any prior versions? Same old questions I always ask.The data helps evaluate your problem. CCleaner version ? OS and version ? Browsers and ver.? Security software and ver? Other data you think might be relevant? What did you do and then what happened? Provide a snapshot of your Windows tab options and Applications tab options . Thanks, davey
  16. Hello Number6, Yes we are still trying to figure out why this occurs for some Win98xx users and not others. Please read all the previous Posts and replies plus related links. There is a known listing problem related to Editing of numeric values for some Portuguese and English users. This may not apply to your problem. If not please let us know. Please be sure to apply the following links and try again. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=5739 Visual Basic 6 Andavari http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en C++ Win98xx Please answer any previous questions in earlier Posts if you still have problems. Thanks , davey
  17. I also use JkDefrag system idle time defragging.Sometimes this improves the Analysis times. The times shown in listings here are for CCleaner Analysis and Run Cleaner only since last boot. These times sure beat the heck out of doing it manually.
  18. Yes,Augeas I have always had that understanding. Besides a Hard Drive has a certain expected life span. Why reduce it with all that extraneous overwriting. Most users are going to be overwriting that data anyway in their normal use of the computer. I have learned a lot following your threads.Thanks. Unfortunately, I am one of those who can't keep a Pub schedule. davey

    secure deleting

Hello novis1, We all do care about your situation. This has been a big learning experience for all of us "helpers". Please let us know the outcome of your efforts. Also let JDPower fill you in on which version of ERASER and REVO that he trusts. All software products have GOOD versions and BAD versions. Good Luck, davey P.S. As regards my success in secure deleting a partially overwritten .jpg file using Recuva. I had the success when I tried secure deleting 4 or 5 .jpg files at the same time with the file I specifically wanted to overwrite in the middle of that list.Maybe this will help in your efforts. I am using Recuva v 1.11.257 .

Me again Dennis, In our hectic modern lives we all tend to "speed read". Here is the section you "sped past". CCleaner Beginner's Guide Cleaner Windows On your left you have check boxes to select what you would like to clean or not to clean. Tip: I recommend using the default checked boxes and running Advanced maybe once a month or so. At the bottom of Progress you have Analyze and Run Cleaner. Clicking on Analyze will create a list of everything CCleaner is going to clean. You can right click in the big white box and save the list as a text file. Clicking on Run Cleaner will clean everything. You can right click in the big white box and save the list as a text file. Note: you do not have to run Analyze, if you do not wish too. Applications On your left you have check boxes to select what you would like to clean or not to clean. Tip: I recommend having them all checked. Unless you are a business or use the documents a lot, I would uncheck the Office box under Applications. The Applications cleaning is tied in with the Windows cleaning, so it cleans them both at once. You do not have to click on each individual tab to clean Windows and Applications. Notice the last sentence. There are "holes" in the Guide but TwistedMetal is busy filling them in. Without his work where would we be. Thanks TwistedMetal and all the other "hard working" contributing members. Good Luck to you Dennis, davey Support your local, helpful forum.
  21. Yes, Glenn I think you are right on the money about the prior version seemed to be faster because it was not actually overwriting the data and now it is when daba uses that option in this version v2.05.555 .
  22. Right Anthony, Now drop that RAM down to around 128 or 256 MB and check again. Perhaps I should have said "not so average computers" is what we are using. davey P.S. You probably also thought " WHAT A RIDICULOUS OPTION" when they added the Minimize to System Tray option in Options > Advanced. I still think the same thing because I am not going to run some other program while CCleaner is still cleaning and secure deleting what have you. P.S.S. Believe me! Anthony, you sure are not missing anything special. Run Cleaner 16 MB deleted 2.675 secs In the CCleaner banner you can see the PC specs I am dealing with. Please no tears of laughter.
  23. Hello mikeb, Yes, select the box labeled User Assist History in the Windows tab in the Advanced options list at the bottom of the Windows tab. Be prepared to lose the complete list .It will start filling back in as you execute the programs by other means such as Start > All Programs,Desktop Shortcuts, or double clicking on the program.exe Icon in Program Files. You will also notice that Start Menu Shortcuts does not appear as long on the progress screen when you Analyze using the Cleaner function. If there are Start Menu Shortcuts you would like to save then drag them to the Start Menu Pinned List at the top of the list on the left side of your Start Menu. You "may" have hundreds of entries in that list depending on how many programs and where you executed them from over months and years, Don't forget to to turn this option off or your list will never fill again until you do. Good Luck, davey P.S. I also advise other "less experienced" users to not use any Advanced options unitl you know exactly what they do and the sometimes surprising results. P.S.S. I advise "less experienced" to review, apply the data there and save this link. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=96510
  24. Hello RedDawn Yes normal as regards short cuts. Can't advise about speeds as I don't use overwrite.However,1 overwrite is sufficient unless you are expecting a visit from MI-5 ,FBI ,CIA or KGB. davey
  25. Hi Anthony, I think it is a processing speed thing. We have average computers and you use super dooper computers. davey P.S. I see most of the items listed on the Windows tab on the screen some a couple of seconds others several seconds some just a flash.
