  1. My ISP supplies a SpeedStream 6520 DSL modem with built in firewall and it works great. So nasty stuff gets stopped at DSL modem. Windows firewall stops further nasty stuff from entering system. Some un-solicited outbound stuff gets stopped by Windows firewall. All other software firewalls really slow down browsers.
  2. WinXP and Vista already have good memory management function but if you are still running Win95/98/SE/ME then that's a different story. brothersoft.com is in China that's one of the most prolific places of trojans, worms and malware. I'd rather endure a root canal than install any of their software.

  4. How about a poll about who is the best virus, trojan or malware producers and the countries that produce the best virus, trojan and and malware removers

  7. Right click on the Desktop then click Properties then Apperance then Advanced then Active Window and what does the Font: say? Mine says Trebuchet MS, Size 10 and B nor I is selected.
  8. xxxx, the TCP/IP protocol is quite chatty with quite a bit of packet acknowledgment going back and forth so the figures you are getting are OK. I'm paying $54.14 with taxes for 6MB connection and you can see my results here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=100904
  9. I have been using SP3 on my XP Pro system since it came out of beta and became RC1. I guess I'll have to figure out how to un-install it before the June Update cycle.
  10. XP needs at least 512MB RAM to work efficiently. RAM is real cheap right now so check what you need at: http://www.crucial.com What speed in GHZ is it rated?
  11. I'm right handed so that's where the noise should come from. Dennis did a great job.
  12. Bang Its almost as convoluted as Sun Java
  13. I feel for him. I was working one Sunday long weekend and I went to the washroom when installing Engineering Changes on a large mainframe so when I tried to open the exit door the knob came off in my hands. I tried to put it back on but the little square thing that it holds it fell out the other side. This was an old building and the washroom was in a closet next to the fire escape and sound isolated from the area I was working in by a thick fire door. About 2 hours later after I had screamed my lungs out and kicked in a small ventilation opening in the bottom of the door the person I was working in came in because he had to go to the washroom but he could not get in as when he inserted the little square thing in the lock it would not turn. He had to get the company's security guard who had to get a large fire extinguisher to break the door in. So it took about 4 hours to get out but it was OK because I was getting overtime double time pay

  15. I'm selling this old Win98SE system that works fine with high speed Internet but is a bit slow and I wanted to get rid of the saved passwords and that utility worked like a charm.
  16. CCleaner has not cleaned out any of my Restore Points. The Disk Cleanup utility in XP Pro does not clean out Restore Points for me.

    Get Smart

Time-Life are heavily promoting the first season of Get Smart with TV adverts lately. I'm not sure what happens now but once you get on their mailing list they automatically mail you whatever they were promoting that month and no matter how hard I tried I could not get off their mailing list. I fixed it by moving to a new place.
  19. I concur with davy as I have tried several defrag applications and Windows Disk Defragmenter is safe. I do use JkDefrag occasionally but I have not noticed any difference in speed after its lengthy defrag operation. I must admit I have not tried Defraggler though.

    Spybot S&D

PC World reviews are for Spybot S&D 1.4 http://www.pcworld.com/search?qt=spybot# I hate the way PC Mag and PC World pop up an annoying nag to purchase their magazine I have a feeling that the ratings are bolstered by how much advertising space is purchased in the magazines and I see that the Reader Rating is much better Yes.
  21. I don't like it because it wants to download Nero Burning Rom 8.3.2.1 which costs $63.99. I can't get the upgrade because Nero 7 came with my DVD player. It wants to update Feed Demon 2.6.0.21 to 2.6.1.3 RC1 and I don't like RC updates. It wants to update to Internet Explorer 8.0 Beta 1 which I don't like because of problems I had before with it and I'm not a Web Developer nor Designer
  22. I like watching NASCAR on Fox or ESPN and old races on SPEED: http://www.nascar.com
  23. Index.dat Suite can be set up to do a "boot time" defrag:http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Product...=Index.datSuite Maybe a "boot time" defrag could become an option for a future release of CCleaner?
  24. Its SpywareBlaster but it has not been Vista certified yet. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
