TheWebAtom
I would suggest a simple batch script that detects the most recent folder and trashes all the other folders. If one of the old folders is accessed by another program, it could cause the script to delete the newer version instead. Obviously, that would have devastating side effects. ___ Edit: Whipped this up in 20 minutes after dinner I'm Shane.
Alan_B
Not a problem. Use the /T option. i.e. /T:C not the default /T:W or the always now /T:A Example from my Local Settings :- C:\Documents and Settings\Dad>DIR LOC* /A:D | find "/" 06/01/2011 20:48 <DIR> Local Settings C:\Documents and Settings\Dad>DIR LOC* /A:D /T:W | find "/" 06/01/2011 20:48 <DIR> Local Settings C:\Documents and Settings\Dad>DIR LOC* /A:D /T:A | find "/" 25/01/2011 20:19 <DIR> Local Settings C:\Documents and Settings\Dad>DIR LOC* /A:D /T:C | find "/" 21/10/2006 22:40 <DIR> Local Settings C:\Documents and Settings\Dad> That shows a Read Access at 20:19 which is when the Event Log started (i.e. start-up before log on) It shows something got written in there on 6 Jan 2011. It shows the folder was created in 2006 and nothing will change that date unless the folder is deleted and then created anew. The date shown by DIR in default mode (no /T option) is NOT affected by Read ACCESS, but could be affected by a write operation within the folder. So long as the /T:C option is used there can be no problem. To see all the options try "DIR /?" Regards Alan

Alan_B
Here is 50 MB of junk. I found these 2 years ago after running NTREGOPT, and believe these backups are only needed if the computer fails to boot after compacting the registry. They recently reappeared for some other unknown reason, possibly when I used regseeker to rebuild my iconcache, and then had to restore an ERUNT backup to put the desktop shortcuts back where they belong. There may be other reasons why these files are spontaneously created, in which case detection based on NTREGOPT/ERUNT might be inappropriate. DalGond
I was manually deleting some files and find about 700Mb(!) of temporary installation files. When updating Apple Software, every installation packet is temporary cached. These temporary installation packets will remain there undefinedly... and according with Apple's support, they're safe to delete! Alan_B
That found and removed 60+ MB of two Apple installers that have been lurking since 2008. CORRECTION - IT ONLY RELOCATED THEM. I found that upon deletion Windows automatically MOVED these *.MSI into the current system Restore Point, so free space was not improved until I created a new R.P. and cleaned the older R.P. Perhaps an advisory comment would be in order when this is cleaned. N.B. - not sure, but I think perhaps using CCleaner in SAFE mode might avoid this effect, but probably not advisable when "cleaning to the bone". Moderators Nergal Posted February 11, 2011 Moderators Share Posted February 11, 2011 Could you please give me more information why this should not be deleted? Thanks I don't know whether other users have experienced the same thing but every time I clean that folder, it seems the Windows autoupdate function kicks in and starts to re-examine my entire system. And as long as that re-examination continues, my system is very slow in its responses. However, I maybe confusing SoftwareDistribution folder removal being bad with some other location where windows stores hotfix uninstallers. Microsoft does not want hotfix installers removed in Vista/Windows7 because it uses those unistallers when it does patches later. (thus it was removed from ccleaner for anything newer than XP back in 2008 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17728&st=0&p=114295&hl=+vista%20+hotfix%20+unistaller&fromsearch=1entry114295) Also Search Hotfix Vista on the Piriform forum and you'll find the history of this issue. Alan_B
I see no problem with FileKey1=%WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\|*.* For several years before I used Winapp2.ini, I have removed this via CCleaner.ini Include9=PATH|C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\|*.* The top 3 Google result for "DataStore.edb" show One person who deleted it and now wanted help to get it back, and one person who had a 40 MB instance that he deleted, and it was recreated as 33 MB. Seems to me a bad idea to zap that one. ALSO CONSIDER; If the 7 MB that are not recreated stipulate all the updates which cause damage, and which you have stipulated should not me offered again, you will get them all over again - just hope you recognise and block the rogues on the next update.
