  1. You appear to be in a 'Russian controlled' area. If the internet powers-that-be have decreed that access is to be denied to that area then there is nothing that the CCleaner developers can do about that.
  2. That does not sound like something that CCleaner would ask you. I've certainly never known it ask anything like that. Can you remember which parts of CCleaner you had run? It's more the kind of thing that an antivirus/antimalware programme would ask. Were you running an anti virus scan after using CCleaner? If so what was it? If you are lucky then your AV, or whatever was asking, may have 'quarantined' them rather than deleting them.
  3. I'd suspect that you have your browser synced, (or maybe your browser is still running in the background) have a read of this: PS. Which browser(s) are you using?
  4. And just for anyone looking here's another 'Recent Files' list - the recent files in the Taskbar jump Lists - and how to clear it with Custom Clean.
  5. Windows keeps multiple different 'Recently used' lists for different places and different things. In this case the 'recently used' list is the one for apps that are pinned to the Taskbar - so what you need to be clearing is 'Taskbar Jump Lists'.
  6. I do recall this being an issue with logging in while back. It lasted a week or two. It threw up that message once, but when you tried a second time it let you log in. I'll see if I can find more about what was going on back then, but as I recall it just stopped doing it after IPS updated the forum software again. PS. I've also seen the same error thrown up when logging onto Malwarebytes forum which also uses the same IPS software.
  7. It happens sometimes, it's usually when the forum software is being updated/maintained. It usually only lasts for a minute or two, but sometimes can be for longer. Has it stopped now or is it happening every time for you?
  8. It Skips Edge because Edge is still open in the background. See this for how to turn off Edge background running so that CCleaner can clean it rather than skipping it: As for the 'Do you want to close EDGE' message. If you stop Edge from background running then you don't need it because CCleaner won't need to ask you to close Edge anyway. If you don't stop Edge from background running and so do want that message back then the easiest way is to reset CCleaner to the default settings, or if that doesn't work to uninstall/reinstall CCleaner. That does of course mean you'll then have to set up any other changes that you had made again.
  9. The paid for version has exactly the same recovery functionality as the free version, no more. If the free version can't recover it then neither will the paid version. Personally I'd save your money, What you pay for is Priority Support if you raise a ticket, support for virtual Hard Drives (who uses one?), and Automatic Updates (Recuva hasn't had a fucntional update for years, it has had an update recently but that was about the licencing system not functionallity). I'm not sure about recovering from an SD card, if it's from a camera than it may have a format that Recuva can't recognise? Someone else will no doubt be along with more idea than I have about SD cards.
  10. Mostly Yes - but also No - it depends. For technical reasons there is a slight possibility of recovering a deleted file from a SSD - that possibility is if it hasn't been long since the file was deleted. But for general purposes you can say that deleted files cannot be recovered from an SSD. As many have found out when trying to do just that. To try and simplify the Techie bits: (A lot of this I learned when wondering about TRIM and garbage collection on a SSD that I have connected over wifi as a network drive). With HDD's once data is written in stays in that place on the disk even after deletion. As it's still there then it can be recovered until it gets overwritten with something new. Secure Deletion is simply overwriting the deleted file with something new. (Usually just random 1's and 0's). Drive Wiping is the same but for the whole free space, or the whole disk. SSDs work differently and can't overwrite 'deleted' data, it needs to be erased first. SSD's tidy themselves up automatically and move existing valid data about, then erase (wipe) anything else. That's called 'Active Garbage Collection' on a SSD, it happens automatically and means there is nothing left to recover. https://uk.crucial.com/articles/about-ssd/active-garbage-collection (It's also partly why you don't normally need to defrag SSD's, the automatic garbage collection moves the valid data to the best location for it, thus 'defragging' it in the process). Note: Some recovery softwares will/do claim to be able to recover from SSD's - but that's only because of that time window for deleted files that haven't been garbage collected yet. Also note that some will say that you can recover from a SSD if you don't have TRIM enabled. Again it's not the full truth, if/when TRIM in enabled then garbage collection will happen more frequently, but even without TRIM garbage collection still happens, it just needs a different trigger than a TRIM. So having TRIM turned off gives a longer 'window' of time to recover a deleted file from a SSD, but eventually garbage collection will fully erase it. https://uk.crucial.com/articles/about-ssd/what-is-trim For example TRIM is an ATA command so only issued over SATA connections. If an external SSD is conected by USB then it can't get a TRIM command issued by the computer. It will still garbage collect though, just not as often. PS. Some external USB drive enclosures have built-in software that will regularly issue a TRIM command because the computer can't.
  11. Do you have any blocks on Avast? A group of related companies, Avast, AVG, HMA and Piriform/CCleaner, now share a common licensing system. It may be that the server that needs to be contacted is at Avast. There again servers do sometimes go offline for maintenance, and are fine if you try again later.
  12. When did you first contact them? It's email messaging not a 'live chat' service. You will get a reply but not instantly. Give it a couple of hours for a reply, or as it's weekend maybe a day.
  13. Odd, and it's not an issue I've seen brought up before. So as you say either it's not widespread, or maybe it's just not been noticed before? PS. is there a particular reason that you are running Firefox 102.9 ESR? ESR is usually for use in large organisations. I know that you say you aren't using Health Check, but just to note here for anyone reading - Health Check does it's own thing using it's own cleaning rules. The ticks/unticks we are talking about here only apply in Custom Clean. I could understand that an update might possibly reset the Custom Clean settings back to default in certain situations, but if it did that then it should also show the ticks for the default settings. The fact that it has happened for you across different Windows versions and CCleaner versions does give me a thought. Are we talking about more than one machine, or is it the same machine that has had Windows upgraded on it? It could be interesting to know what happens for you if you close CCleaner following an update, and then re-open it. Check what is ticked/not ticked then but don't change anything and 'Run Cleaner' to see what it cleans. (I'm thinking that the update might be reverting to default settings but not changing the ticks unless you open/close, ie. it could be a User Interface/display/graphics issue). Alternatively this should prevent it from happening: Do you have "Save all settings to INI file" selected in Options>Advanced? That saves whatever settings changes you have made in CCleaner to a file called "ccleaner.ini" which is then read-in everytime that you launch CCleaner. That file is kept across updates, so if the update does change something in the settings then 'ccleaner.ini' should change it back again when you open CCleaner.
  14. Going off memory here because I'm on Android. As far as I remember Speccy will give the type and size of RAM but it can't say who made it or what their part number is. They are probably assuming that you have bought the RAM and fitted it yourself. So want to double check that it's compatible with your machine. If it's what was in there when you bought the machine then just tell them that and the info that Speccy does give you.
  15. Good to hear you got there. 'Wipe Free Space' is part of Custom Clean and it's a 2 part thing. Part one is What-to-wipe and is in the settings where you set up which drive(s) you want to wipe the free space on. Part two is When-to-wipe and is in the Custom Clean lists. So you can set which drives to be wiped, but don't actually wipe them everytime that you run Custom Clean. (Because a free space wipe takes a long time). When you do want to wipe you tick the box in 'Advanced' and then run Custom Clean. 'Drive Wiper' is a seperate, different, tool. with it you can choose to wipe a drive completely, securely deleting all the data on it and not just the free space. Use that option carefully, if you set it to wipe 'Entire Drive' then it will delete and wipe any/all files on the specified drive and they will then be unrecoverable. It won't let you completely wipe your OS drive (usually C:) because that would wipe Windows and brick the machine, so it only lets you wipe free space on the OS drive. Drive Wiper is a one screen tool, you set it there and click on 'Wipe' to run it.
  16. Were you using 'Wipe Free Space' in Custom Clean? You have to tick that both in the settings and also in the list under Advanced. If you don't tick it in both places then it doesn't wipe the free space. You should know if that happens because it won't take any time. The above is setting it to wipe the free space and MFT on drive D: - IF/WHEN you also tick 'Wipe Free Space' under 'Advanced' in Custom clean. In this screenshot that hasn't been ticked, so the free space won't get wiped. It's not something I do often but I recently had cause to wipe the free space on a couple of external drives - I used the Drive Wiper in Tools: Set at 1-pass was enough so that Recuva then couldn't find anything to recover from them. Note that one of the drives I wiped the free space on was a 1TB drive with just under 700GB free space, it was plugged into a USB2 port and took 10+ hours to do the 1-pass wipe. (It would have been quicker in a USB3 port but it would still be hours).
  17. I always go by the principle - "If it's working then you don't need to fix it or change it". Drivers can be updated to fix things that are not relevant to your machine - so you don't need that update. But a driver updater doesn't know that, all it checks/knows is that there is a newer one available - whether you need it or not. If you are not having problems with your monitor then I'd leave the driver as it is. And that goes for any other drivers, only change them if needed because you are having problems. (You might have gathered that I'm not a fan of driver updaters, not even CCleaners' driver updater).
  18. Good to hear. I'm guessing that they don't know what the issue was either. But as an old style key was working for you then if nobody could work out why the obvious move was to give you another old style key - if they could. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has similar problems in future.
  19. Is Recuva actually recovering viewable JPEG's, or just recovering a filename with blank data in the actual file?
  20. OK, so Custom Clean is telling you that it is Skipping (ignoring) the cleaning of Edge. That is usually because Edge is still running in the background. You need to go into the Edge settings and turn off both 'Startup Boost' and 'Continue running background extensions and apps .....' See the link below for screenshots: OK, donc Custom Clean vous dit qu'il saute (ignore) le nettoyage d'Edge.
  21. Yes that was an old thread, so old that I've moved your query out from it because CCleaner has changed a lot since then. There are a few things CCleaner that run in the background these days, more in Pro than in Free - they can be turned off. In both Free and Pro on by default are Smart Cleaning, and Automatic Updating of CCleaner. Both can be found in Options and unticked to turn them off. Either of those if enabled will put a CCleaner icon in your System Tray. There is also 'Cleaning Schedule', again in Options. That is off by default and if enabled shouldn't run more than once a day so shouldn't interfere with things except at that set time. If you have Pro then Performance Optimiser if set up will run in the background. I'm not sure what affect that might have on MIDI. There are a couple of other tasks that are scheduled to run daily and contact the CCleaner server to check for 'emergency' updates or report any crashes of CCleaner, but they are quick to run so they shouldn't interfere with things. They can be disabled in Task Scheduler. PS. 3 of the 6 posters from that old 2009 thread are still active in 2023, of the others 1 last logged on in 2020, 1 last in 2019, and the OP hasn't returned since 2009.
  22. PS. You might still want to do the 'Desktop Shortcuts' clean I outlined above, just in case it does find some broken links that can now be removed.
  23. Good, a Restart clears a lot of things in Windows and it's the simplest thing to do. A lot of people these days leave their computers on all the time. Some let them 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate' when they have finished using it. Some 'Shutdown' when they have finished using it. But all of those save something from what Windows was running/doing/had-been-set. So with Windows 8, 10 & 11 a 'Restart' is a good idea at least weekly to give things a fresh start.
  24. Which article has lost you? (I've linked 2 and Hazelnut linked a 3rd).
  25. No, we are not talking about the same lists. I'm saying that they are different lists and that only one is being cleaned not the other
