  1. Steal away, as long as the user gets the answer it doesn't relly matter who gave it. @UniStudent as said, because of the TRIM function you have to regard files that have been deleted from an SSD as unrecoverable. Which is why making regular backups of SSDs is important, just in case something like this happens. In this case your easiest solution if you don't have a backup of the files is to download them again from the university. At least Recuva can tell you what files they were, so you know which ones need to be downloaded again.
  2. No problem, it happens. The duplicate thread has been removed. As well as the 'Activity' > 'My Activity Streams' on the menu there is another way to see your content. Top right of the page is your username, click on it and there are some actions, click 'Profile'. That opens your profile page where your activity is listed, and where you can add/change/edit various things in your user profile. eg You can add a small graphic or picture as your forum Avatar. Note that on some fora you need to have made a certain number of posts before it will let you add or edit things in your profile.
  3. Windows keeps multiple different 'Recently used' lists for different places and different things. So Custom Clean lets you clean each one or not as you choose. In Custom Clean under 'Windows Explorer' as well as 'Recent Documents', there is also 'Other Explorer MRUs'. (MRU = Most Recently Used). But the ones that we get asked about the most are the two that you are asking about. Firstly there are the 'Taskbar Jump Lists' where Windows keeps the recent files for apps pinned to the taskbar, if you don't want to see them then tick it in Custom Clean: The Quick Access is a different thing and rather than cleaning the recent list you have to turn it off altogether:
  4. Did you not see this? and then when opened this interface?
  5. If it is saying that while you are online then it simply means that something is wrong with a connection. It's just a general message that it shows for all connection errors. If you try Health Check then the software updater in that ('Security' box) will probably say the slightly more helpful "Unable to reach server". That still doesn't say what the actual problem is though. It could be that a particular server is faulty, that does happen at times, or more likely that someting in your Antivirus/Firewall/security is blocking the connection. As you say that it's been going on for several weeks then I'd suspect that it isn't a server fault and that you have something installed which is blocking the connection, or that you have changed some Windows Security setting which is now blocking it. Are you using the built in Windows Security? Have you added/installed any other Antivirus/Antimalware/etc. applications?
  6. Sorry, I'd forgotten that you'd said Win 7. It would have been Windows Security Essential for Win 7 - if you had installed it. It wasn't there by default like it is in later Windows versions. However like Windows 7 itself MSE is no longer supported. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-microsoft-security-essentials-c25ad47a-7d15-8072-1438-b07dffcbbb20 PS. You are aware that you can still (usually) upgrade Win 7 to Win 10 for FREE? https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/ (If the machine is capable you can upgrade it to Win 11).
  7. What kind of drive is this? HDD, SSD, memory stick, etc.? How did you lose the files? Accidentaly deleted, drive error/crash, etc.? As those seem to be in your 'Downloads' folder then can you not just download them again?
  8. Have you tried downloading the installer again? Where did you download it from? Download it from here and try again: https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva/builds PS. Despite what you say that behaviour does sound like an AV/AM blocking the install. So please tell us just what AV, AM, and/or other security you are running. Also check your app setting to make sure you can install apps other than from the MS store: Next- you say: which indicates that you are attempting to use a custom install, please give details of what you are setting/changing there. eg. if you are changing the install location then does the current user have permissions to write files to that location?
  9. CCleaner is not an antivirus or antimalware tool, it's basically a junk file cleaner. Windows Security/Defender is as good as most that you can buy for your Antivirus, some will team it with Malwarebytes Premium anti-malware which works in a different way for 'layers' of protection. Because it works differently Malwarebytes Premium can be run in real time alongside Windows Defender, or another antivirus. (Normally you shouldn't try to run 2 Antivirus apps at once in real time, they will clash). Or you can just use Malwarebytes Free as an on-demand scan. As you touched on above there are different tools for different jobs, so sometimes you want to use more than one tool. Personally I use the built in Windows Security/Defender as my antivirus, and run a weekly on-demand malware scan with Malwarebytes Free, I also have Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension running in my browser. https://www.malwarebytes.com/ https://www.malwarebytes.com/browserguard Then I'll ocassionally run a scan with ADWcleaner, that isn't a junk cleaner like CCleaner or an antivirus/antimalware - instead ADW removes any junkware, adware, etc. that may have sneaked onto your machine, it can even remove some of the Windows bloat. https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner
  10. That is exactly how it should work. The option to run CCleaner from the recycle bin context menu simply runs CCleaner with you current settings. You had turned off (unticked) 'Empty Recycle Bin' in the Custom Clean settings, and so the bin wouldn't be emptied by Custom Clean. ie. Unticking it is saying to Custom Clean -'Don't empty the Bin'. Once you ticked it again then it started being emptied again.
  11. CCleaner uses 'recurse' functions to clean layers like you describe, cleaning the 'children' files down. As for tuning Custom Clean, well that's your choice of what you want to customise. The default options are what many would want, then they might add others for apps they use, and untick things for apps that they don't. One trick that you can do us to right-click each of the ones that aren't ticked and in the menu that pops up 'Analyze' it. If something is found to be cleaned then you have to decide. eg. If you analyze one of the Windows Downloads options it may well find files to remove, but only you can decide if you want to do that. (Most times you wouldn't want to, which is why they are not ticked as default).
  12. What you are seeing is normal. It's just how a computer works. You clear (delete) files, Windows recreates some of them and puts then straight back - but they are now empty, they have been cleaned. You don't suddenly 'clear them all' after multiple goes - what happens if you do that is simply that Windows stops recreating them while it tries to work out why something keeps removing them. They will be back again in a couple of minutes. Have a read of this, particularly from "Windows files that re-appear straight after cleaning:"
  13. I agree to a point - but I think you are missing a couple of things. When MS add new registry entries that the current CCleaner reg cleaner doesn't recognise then it takes time for CCleaner to be changed to ignore them - if it is decided to ignore them. The developers may decide that clearing the new entry is required anyway, even though Windows will create it again. Have a read of the link in my signature; There's an explanation of why CCleaner will remove certain files even though it's known that Windows will put new ones straight back to replace them. That isn't an error, CCleaner does it deliberately to 'refresh' the files. (Whilst not quite the same thing for a registry entry as a file, doing that can still be relevant to reset some entries that may have been modified).
  14. It's quite simple - CCleaner removes it, Microsoft puts it straight back again. There is very little point in commenting about it here, the CCleaner developers can't change how Windows works. There is nothing that CCleaner can do to stop it happening, other than making such an entry 'ignored' by default. That isn't done by default but you can set that yourself if you want to.
  15. Is it actually saying that the cleanig is 'Skipped' ? If Custom Clean is saying that something is being 'Skipped' then that is because it is still running. In this case it sounds as if your browser is open. Close the browser and it should then be cleaned instead of skipped. For the other things, if it isn't saying 'Skipped' but instead you are seeing files coming back after cleaning then read this to see why that is and what you can do about it:
  16. The 'new' section to clean the Downloads folder has been in CCleaner since v6.06 which was released six months ago in November of 2022, The options there have never been selected by default but have always been left unticked for the user to enable if they want to. I've just double checked this myself and downloaded/installed CCleaner v6.10 on a laptop which didn't previously have CCleaner installed. None of the 'Windows Downloads' cleaning options are ticked by default.
  17. Yes it's still happening . You can of course just disable/delete the scheduled task, but it will be re-enabled by the next CCleaner update so you'd have to disable/delete it each time there's a CCleaner update. Changing when it is scheduled to run is kept across updates - so you'll only need to do it the once. The steps below schedule it to run at Windows Startup rather than at a set time, and it's that quick you won't notice it run. Open the Windows Start menu and type: Task Select Task Scheduler and open it. In the Task Scheduler select 'Task Scheduler Library', right-click on 'CCleanerCrashReporting', and select 'Properties' in the context menu. In the properties dialogue that opens select the 'Triggers' tab, select 'Edit' Set the task to run at Startup: OK out and close Task Scheduler. Job done and you shouldn't be bothered by it again.
  18. I'm not sure what it is that you want Piriform/CCleaner to do about international sanctions?
  19. Back when Storage Sense was new 'Downloads' was set as a default to clean anything in Downloads older than 30 days. It was changed to non-default following complaints. https://www.howtogeek.com/403009/how-to-prevent-storage-sense-from-deleting-your-downloaded-files-on-windows-10/
  20. You might want to backup all that to somewhere safer if you haven't already. It's safest to treat the Downloads folder as a temporary location and not store things in there that you want to keep. I basically treat the Downloads folder much as I treat the Recycle bin, something temporary and not safe for long term storage. (eg. I have a "Saved Installers" folder that I move downloaded installers and other .exe's to if I want to keep them for a while). If you recall, a couple of years ago Microsoft added cleaning the Downloads folder to Disk Clean-up and Stotage Sense - and they enabled it by default. Many people then complained because the entire contents of their Downloads folders got automatically deleted by Storage Sense, or deleted when they ran Disk Clean-up. It's no longer there as "Downloads". But look at the description text in that old screenshot - many believe that it was an error by MS and that they meant it to be clearing the "Downloaded Program Files" folder - a different folder altogether. "Downloaded Program Files" is still in Disk Clean-up. If they can make a naming error like that once ....... CCleaners cleaning of the Downloads folder is not enabled by default, and if you do choose to use it then it also gives you more control over which types of files get cleaned from Downloads and which don't.
  21. That is likely, the Firefox version from the MS store does use different file locations to the standard Firefox. However I've never had Firefox from the MS store and CCleaner v6.10 is also now cleaning some new entries in the standard Firefox as I noted above.
  22. Sorry, I haven't got a clue. It could be anywhere from a field internal to the .exe's code, or from the Windows registry, or from ....... You'd need to look at the CCleaner source code to be sure where it's looking, but of course that's commercial software and not going to be published. Is there a particular reason why you seem to be so bothered by how MS have written their name differently in different places?
  23. As stated the sanctions and restrictions are Internationally decided and imposed, there is nothing that Piriform/CCleaner can do about that - it's a matter for governments.
  24. "Corp." is simply an abbrivation of "Corporation". It doesn't make any difference to anything which one has been used, they both mean the same thing. Microsoft will use either one, or sometimes both, when signing their software. You'd have to ask MS why they use each one in different places. But there is probably no particular reason why other than which developer is typing it in at the time, or possibly how much space they have to display it in a particular message box? It's quite common for programmers/developers to shorten longer words so that they will fit more neatly in a message box.
  25. Surely you are aware that the International Community has placed sanctions on Russia and Russian controlled areas? Parts of Ukraine will be affected by those sanctions, including some parts that are not under Russian control. Those sanctions include restriction of the use of parts of the internet, and the use of certain softwares. They are international sanctions and as such are beyond the control of your ISP or of any software company. Which parts of Ukraine are affected are affected will change with time as the situation changes. The Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions have recently been included in the sanctions, which may account for what you are now experiencing. https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2022/10/06/eu-adopts-its-latest-package-of-sanctions-against-russia-over-the-illegal-annexation-of-ukraine-s-donetsk-luhansk-zaporizhzhia-and-kherson-regions/
