I'd recommend running a full defrag once, and then schedule a defrag. (at least once a month) Personally, I defrag once a day. Takes me 1-2 minutes.

What are exactly those tests ? Things like iBench (Apple), Sunspider (Apple) or V8 Benchmark suite (Google) ? Are IE7 and 8 in 32 or 64 bits ? Too many unanswered questions... Things like "FF 3.0.8 is faster than 3.0.9" are weird. I don't think Mozilla would release an update slowing the browser...

I just tried a normal scan, the 64-bit one is a bit faster (64 bits : 12s, 32 bits : 15s) A 64 bit Defraggler would be great (but I think you already imagined that, didn't you ?)

Some tips : Update to SP3. Download Autoruns, a SysInternals freeware, and disable useless things. (like the 3 Java entries, if you have OpenOffice there are 4 OpenOffice entries, etc) Windows key + R >> Type services.msc and hit Enter >> Disable some useless things. (but ONLY if you know exactly what they do) Windows key + R >> type msconfig >> Go to the Startup tab (or a name like that), click Advanced options, check the "Number of processors" checkbox, and in the dropdownn list click on 2. (I don't know the exact names, my computer is in French) Maybe buy some more RAM.

Try updating to SP3...

...IE6 is slower, not standards-compliant, has no tabs, no popups blocking, is really old, hasn't got any of the new things in modern browsers like FF 3.1 / Chrome 2 / IE8 / Opera 10 / Safari 4, ... Why don't you want to upgrade to Vista (or Seven when it'll be out) ? @Corona : PB = Petabyte = 1024 TB.

The French translation is still (or should I say "even more" ?) incomplete and Google-translated (things like "surligner les effacements s?curis?s" are really meaningless)... But Recuva itself is great....

Update CCleaner. Latest is 2.18. Did you clean the Registry ? Are you using winapp2.ini ?

And missing things, too. (some things in 19, 21, 2063, 2064, ...) I think a good thing to do would be totally recreating the lang files using XML files instead of DLLs. WAAAAAAAAY better. Faster to edit (you don't need ResHacker, only Notepad), you can place comments to help translators, there is always the original variable name = translators don't need to open the Defraggler.exe file with ResHacker to know what was the original English name of the string... You can do XML translations easily with C#, so I suppose it's easy with C++ too ?

This is a registry cleaner. Even if they say "it is safe", you should do a registry backup before...

I agree. The French translation is a total mess too. Missing (lots of) strings, Google translations, typing mistakes.... Piriform devs should really change some of their translators... A correct translation of a program like Defraggler or CCleaner takes...15 minutes ? And re-arrange the strings locations in the DLLs, some strings locations are weird.

Update .NET Framework....Latest version is 3.5 SP1. I would recommend installing the Secunia PSI http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ to check for insecure/end of life programs and update them.

Are the fragmented files in C:\System Volume Information, or C:\pagefile.sys, or C:\hiberfile.sys, or things in C:\ beginning with a $ like $MFT, $Logfile, $MFTMirr, etc ?

Try using the command-line parameter /debug3. This will create a log into the Defraggler installation path.

I find FF 3.6 a1pre better & faster than FF 3.1b3...But in the nightly I'm using, there is a huge bug with multi-lines text boxes like the one in which you type your message. Impossible to go back with the arrows or the mouse when you've typed text. And if you highlight it, you cannot delete it....Not good..
