  1. Yep. Good idea. Add an option to move entire folders to the end of the drive. I make a backup every week. When I need to copy the files from the backup to the HDD then Windows will place a lot of or even every file in the middle of the drive instead of at the beginning. But what I don't like is that Windows wants to move those files (gradually over time) back to the beginning of the drive. I have some 5 folders that I open only 2 or 3 times every month and then I wouldn't mind that opening those folders takes a bit longer.
  2. GOOGLE for the words "Microsoft Updates", not "Windows Update". Then this link should be pulled up: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

    Low RAM Message

It's clearly a case of "low free HDD space". In combination with only 1 GB of memory means that Windows needs to access the HD VERY often. Suggestions: - As mentioned before install more memory. E.g. 2 GB. - Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage and that improves overall system performance (i.e. less disk I/O). LOTS can be done before buying a new & larger HDD: With each monthly Windows Update the amount of free space shrinks. Solution: - Run the build-in "Disk Cleanup" tool with all boxes ticked, including "Remove system files". This last one will remove obsolete archived systemfiles (we're talking possibly about GBs !!!!). - Remove "C:\SoftwareDistribution" (This folder is NOT covered by the "Disk Cleanup" tool or Ccleaner by default). - Remove with Ccleaner one or more System Restore Points (SRP). Each SRP can be anywhere from 1 to 5 GBs in size. - Run the build-in Windows Defragmentation program & defragment the pagefile (Piriform's Defraggler). - If you're using Internet Explorer then this can be configured to delete the temporary internet files when IE is closed. Let me know if this was helpful.
  4. I need to add that this "Repair" button (as mentioned above) gets highlighted when I choose e.g. MS Word. And I know that MS Word uses the "MS Installer" subsystem/feature to install that program. That's why I made the connection with the program that (supposedly) removes orphaned MSI & MSP installation files.
  5. Run the program called "Windows Repair (All in One)". It can fix a very significant amount of problems, including fixing WMI & restarting WMI. http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
  6. Perhaps MS could add an option called "Install Updates when the computer shuts down" ? Or something along these lines.
  7. - And that's IMO precisely a good reason why one should choose "Notify before downloading/installing". Then one can do the updating when one has time enough. - When WU asks me to restart my laptop then I Always decline. WU just has to wait until I shut down my system. Then the system will take care of itself and I can do something else.
  8. But the user can do a number of things to reduce the risk of a failed update (Windows Update is quite "brittle" and can easily be "broken"): - Set Updates to "Notify before downloading". - Don't do anything else with one's computer when Windows Update is busy updating. Facebook says that it only detects a failed update, it doesn't repair it. I hope simply removing the corrupted file and re-installing the update/program will solve such a problem.
  9. I don't dislike the "flat" design but I am not too happy with it either. Haven't made up my mind yet. What what I certainly don't like is the design of the header (in that regard I am on the same page as "Mirage").
  10. I noticed that in the latest CC version (v5.02) there's a button "Repair" in the "Un-Install Program" section of CC. (Was it already in a previous CC version ??) I assume that that button uses the "Repair" feature of the "MS Installer" subsystem ? That reminded that there's a program that can remove orphaned MS Installer files. http://appnee.com/wicleanup/ Perhaps the developers of CC are willing & able to see how this program works (contact the author ??) and add this "Remove orphaned MSI files" feature to a next version of CC ? (Perhaps this feature is already included in the "un-install program" section of CC??)
  11. I assume you're talking about the "failed Windows Updates detection tool" ? Alas, No. But it certainly would be a MAJOR plus to get that tool "up & running".
  12. New version of "Windows Repair" (v2.10.4) available. Some infections place "symbolic links" on the folders for Windows Defender & MS Security Essentials and then Windows can't find the appropriate files. The latest Windows Repair version now removes those symbolic links in repair #10 ("Remove Policies ........").
  13. Although I have no problems reading german, I let GOOGLE do a translation from german to dutch and GOOGLE did a decent job translating the article. Far from perfect but it was "readable".
  14. Right. In other words, users of Internet Explorer & Firefox now can expect to see (a lot of) more updates for those browsers.
  15. And now we'll see that hackers will be focussing on exploiting weak spots in HTML 5. Right ?
  16. Question: Do other users of Cleanmem experience problems with the Mini Monitor's system tray icon ? It seems (!!!) that recently Microsoft has changed something in the Operating System (e.g. Win 7) and that in combination with Cleanmem's system tray icon causes (non fatal) problems with all the other system tray icons. On my Win 7 system I had to re-start the process "Explorer.exe" to force Windows to properly display all those icons. If too many users are experiencing this problem then that's a good reason to issue an improved version of Cleanmem. One (temporary) solution for this problem is to delay (e.g. 5 minutes) all Cleanmem related tasks upon start-up/log-in in Task Scheduler. If other users have this problem as well then I would recommend to post a reply on the PcWinTech.com website forum or send the author of Cleanmem (Piriform user name: SMC1979) a PM. @Jecartas: When one has Windows Vista and newer then one can pull up which processes are using the drive. Open "Resource Monitor" and it will provide tonnes of useful info.
  17. @Augeas: I don't think "optimize" equals "Clean free space" ...........
  18. - Looks like the VSS Service is busy. When Windows detects that Defraggler is being run then somehow it triggers the VSS Service. The VSS Service makes a copy of important files on your HD or SSD. And VSS is a Service/task/process that's run in the background while the user is doing something else. After VSS has completed its tasks then the folder "C:\System Volume Information" has increased in size. (Does anyone know how to pull up the size of that particular folder ?) Solution: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=35459 - When you've got a SSD then I would recommend to NEVER defragment/optimize that particular drive. A SSD drive is already faster than a HDD even WITHOUT optimization. Additionally optimizing/defragmenting a SSD will reduce the lifetime of a SSD. @the Defraggler developers: I would recommend to ALWAYS (temporarily) disable the VSS when Defraggler is busy defragmenting a drive.
  19. New program available at www.tweaking.com : Technicians Toolbox. The program includes the previously published "Svchost look up tool". The program gives the user/computer techies more control over Windows. http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,2675.0.html http://tweaking.com/files/Tweaking.com-Technicians_Toolbox-Beta1.zip The program can be used/tested during the month of january 2014 for free. If readers/users have comments on how the program can be improved or have found bugs in the program then they are strongly encouraged to post them on the Tweaking.com forum. Or send the author (Piriform username: "SMC1979") of the program a PM.
  20. I made 2 screenshots of the german version of the free Speccy version on my dutch system. One with temperatures in Celsius and one in Fahrenheit. I changed it from Celsius to Fahrenheit and back. I see no problems. Odd. Perhaps only the SPECCY Pro version fails to convert the temperature from Fahrenheit in Celsius and simply substitutes the "F" with the "C" (and perhaps the other way around) ? If so, then this is certainly a bug.
  21. - Nein, der Einstellungsmöglichkeit fehlt nicht. Wähle "Ansicht" (Hauptschirm) > "Einstellungen" und mann kann wählen zwischen "Metrisch ( C)" und "Imperial ( F)". (I hasse das Wort "Imperial"). - Das Bild zeigt Angaben bereits in Celsius (z.b. "78 C")
  22. Excluding C:\Users\YOURACCOUNT\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent\*.* only works in some language (dutch, english, ...........) versions of MS Office. If the user has e.g. a spanish or a german version of MS Word\MS Office then this doesn't work because then this folder has a different name. E.g. in the spanish version this folder is called "....\Office\Reciente\.......".
  23. You can configure Internet Explorer to delete all the folders with the temporary internet files when the browser is closed. (Internet options > advanced > ..........).
  24. @Hazelnut: I know. I know. But I wasn't too interested in this issue until now. In the 2nd half of this year I tried to help some folks on "Bleeping Computer" who also had a slow system (XP, Vista, win 7) but this solution helped for one user with a slow XP system. Only then I became interested and remembered this thread again. @Andavari: I am trying to get the author of "Tweaking's Windows Repair" to look into this matter. Perhaps there's a simple fix for solving this problem. And then it could be added to "Windows Repair". That's why I am GOOGLE-ing this issue lately. But there seems be not too much detailed info "floating around". I came across only little info for Win 7 & XP but nothing for Vista. And Microsoft doesn't provide too much info as well. However, I'll try the DELL program.
