  1. - MS is not too consistent in the way they offer those individual updates. Sometimes one has to pull up the appropriate MS Security Bulletin first, to find a link to a download location. But with a little more effort and some more imagination I was able to pull up nearly all (except for 2 or 3 ones) individual installation files for my Win 7 system. GOOGLE was in that regard VERY helpful. - I also noticed that MS no longer offers some old(er) installation files. Those seem to have been replaced by newer versions/updates. - I am curious how they handle those updates in Win 10.
  2. @Hazelnut: Fully agree. I want to keep as much control over my system as possible. I fear Win 10 could mess up my system and there's now way to go back to a good functioning Win 7 (without a fresh re-install). No thanks. I "un-subscibed" to Win 10 yesterday.
  3. Interesting detail: “Reserve” your copy of Windows 10 and your Windows computer will automatically download Windows 10 in bits and pieces before the release date. When Windows 10 is good to go, you won’t have to download a massive installer from Microsoft at the same time everyone else does. It’s a bit like preloading a game or movie before the release date. 5. @Olli_S: doesn't your german version of Office 2010 put all those shortcuts in the folder "..............\Zuletzt verwendet" ??
  6. Quote: "Why is ist not woking when I add a specific excel file here: C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent\MyExcelFile.xlsx.LNK" Quite simple. In this case CC will look for a folder (with the attribute "folder") called "MyExcelFile.xlsx.LNK". When you insert the "|" between "Recent\" and "MyExcelFile.xlsx.LNK" then that will tell CC it must look for a file (without the attribute "folder") called "MyExcelFile.xlsx.LNK". Put another way: The characters in front of the 1st "|" are treated as a pathname and the characters behind the 1st "|" are read as a filename.
  7. - When I look at the content of "Winapp1.ini" then it looks like that the last used files by Office 2010 are stored in the registry (as well). I see over there this line: "RegKey28=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\File MRU" (MRU is the abbreviation of "Most Recently Used"). And CC removes those MRU registry entries as well. I could imagine that MS Office "doesn't" like that this registry entry is removed as well and then will delete those "*.lnk" files as well. - If CC cleans a number of files in that "Recent" folder then those should show up in the list of files to be deleted. No need to do a "test clean". But CC won't mention which registry entries are going to be cleaned.
  8. Right. That explains a lot. I use IE 11.
  9. Tried the link. Thread is still "alive & kicking" & download still available.
  10. I will wait a bit before installing Win 10. I assume it will stiil have a number of (serious) bugs. I am still happy with Win 7. I also got the (system tray icon) message.
  11. - Install v2.50. Then replace the old "mini_monitor.exe" file with the new one, available in that thread mentioned above. When opened it will report as "v2.51". - If no new errors show up then I assume v2.51 will be officially released.
  12. - In reply #253 I reported that Cleanmem had some problems. There's a new Cleanmem exe available. I hope it will solve reported problems. Give it a try. More info available at http://forums.pcwintech.com/index.php/topic,5614.0.html Up to now the new exec didn't push CPU to go "through the roof" on my system anymore and the system tray icon has no problem anymore of showing. So far, so good.
  13. When the user has selected "Defrag Freespace" (with or without "Allow defragmentation") then the program starts to move files towards the beginning of the drive. A new/changed option could change the place where those files are moved from/grabbed. Suggestion: Instead of starting to grab files that are (the) closest/closer to the beginning of the drive, a next version of DF could start the defrag process with grabbing files that are the closest/closer to the end of the drive and then working it way towards the beginning of the drive. A next DF version could contain such (a) new extra "Defrag Freespace" option(s) or contain a changed, existing "Defrag Freespace" option(s). I think such an option would be much more effective. When I look at the drive map then the current "Freespace" options take too much time before DF starts to move files that are located at the end of the drive. Changing the behaviour of these options will also give the user the impression that DF is doing its job better.
  14. I noticed something interesting. Let's assume the user has 2 folders ("Folder1", "Folder2") with in each a number of defragmented files and only "Folder1" has been added to the "Exclude" list. Then - of course - DF will show the defragmented files in "Folder2" only. Removing "Folder1" from the "Exclude" list results in that DF will show the defragmented files in "Folder1" immediately as well. The user doesn't has to re-analyze the drive again. So, DF has a list in memory and displays only the files that meet the user defined requirements. This makes it more likely that - as mentioned previously - something goes wrong with/in the file list when DF starts to move those files. So, it more likely that the file list (in memory) gets corrupted somehow or that the file moving algorithm(s) is/are (a bit) "buggy".
  15. - A follow up on post #44 in this thread. And it has become more clearer where DF goes "off the rails". After a fresh re-install of Win 7, I also re-installed DF v2.19. DF starts with the "Modern" view but the user can switch to "Original" but the checkboxes remain in "Modern" view. Only when I restart DF it will show the "Original" checkboxes. So, DF doesn't update/refresh the file list pane when the users switches between views.
  16. - Perhaps the Anti Virus program blocked the movement of files ????
  17. - When one has moved large files to the end of the drive then Windows sometimes needs to access those files every once and a while. In my experience Windows itself doesn't bother too much where it places (the) new files. It simply puts those files at a place where the disk head is on any given moment. I call it the "Quick & Dirty" method. (But that's what we all want: a fast system, right ?) - When one has files moved to the end of the drive then Windows will still regularly read the directory files and then it can decide to place those news files (partially) at the end of the drive as well.
  18. - Try this: Select "Action", "Advanced", "Defrag Freespace" or "Defrag Freespace (fragmentation allowed)". - One problem is that Defraggler doesn't move System Restore Points. It could be problem when those things are placed at the end of the disk. But then you can delete them with Piriform's Ccleaner.
  19. I can report some good news. I tried DF v2.19 today and I was able to add "C:\ProgramData" to the "Exclude"list, again. So, I assume it was a "rogue" registry setting that messed things up.
  20. Windows Repair v3.20 released: - Bug fixes - Repair #4 (Register System Files) now also registers a number of files needed for Control Panel. Post your comments, bug reports & suggestions on the "Tweaking.com" forum website.
  21. - Agree. The standard "Disk Clean Up" doesn't clean too much. But one can add more scripts to the tool. Don't ask me how it can be done, but it's possible. The "paid for" version of Tweaking's Windows Repair contains a number of those scripts. Then one can delete temporary files for all profiles/users.
  22. More bugs in DF v2.19 ??? At least I came across more odd behaviour in DF. - I tried to add "C:\ProgramData" to the "Exclude" list but that folder didn't show up in the window/menu. So, I wasn't able to add that folder to that list. Odd. Bug in Windows or a bug in DF ?? "Rogue" registry setting ?? - I have been "torturing" DF again. I excluded all folders (including "c:\Videos") on my C: drive except for "c:\Regbackup". Since I couldn't exclude "C:\ProgramData", that folder was "taken care of" as well when I choose "Defrag". But to my surprise some files from another folder ("C:\Videos") were moved to a spot towards the end of the drive. I assume, that was meant to create room/space for files in the 2 other folders that weren't excluded. But they weren't moved back, more to the beginning of the drive and remained fragmented. Odd. I would have expected that DF wouldn't move/"touch" those video files at all, since those files/folders were in the "Excluded" list. Bug ? Or un-intended consequence of the algorithms ? (System set up in my signature (SPECCY)).
  23. - Quite simple. If one has installed ALL the MS Updates then one can use the build-in "Disk Cleanup" tool. The webarticle was written for Win 8 but it also works in Win 7. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/44274-windows-update-cleanup-windows-8-a.html In Windows Vista one can do something similar http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/142656-sp1-disk-cleanup-tool.html Also clean out the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" folder. Can contain GBs.
  24. I am using AVAST. But the current build/version is IMO too intrusive. When I disable the AV (for system maintenance) then some processes keep running in the background. Those processes simply pass on everything that happens but they seem to keep CPU at a higher level than I feel comfortable with. And there're a number of other small things that I don't like. All things combined makes it highly likely that I going to switch to another AV in the future.
  25. - You also can limit the process to defragment all the defragmented files only and not defragment the entire disk. - You also can let the program run for an hour or two and then abort. - You can limit the defragmentation process to a number of folders. There're A LOT OF options in the "Settings" menus (plural) if you'd care to dig a little deeper.
