  1. - Can you provide a weblink in which this problem is described in more detail ? Preferably a weblink to the Microsoft website ? (tried to Google it, up to now, to no avail). - I have seen systems (Vista, Win 7) that were very slow and (very) high memory usage. High memory usage would make perfect sense because in PIO mode the amount of data written/read to/from disk is low and therefore would cause the data buffer (in the memory) grow to large sizes as well. Do you have any thoughts/info on the relationship between memory usage & PIO mode ? - I could image that some line in the registry could prevent this resetting to DMA from happening. This DMA/PIO issue could be registry related as well.
  2. See how CCleaner behaves on your XP system when run in Safe Mode.
  3. @Kenny: I have the same problem. There's another additional problem: Even programs build-in in Windows 7 itself (is this confined to Windows 7 only ???? Does this happen in Vista, Win 8 & 8.1 as well ???) don't Always properly recognize the fact that the Task Bar is placed on the left hand side of the screen. Then the left hand edge of a program's GUI is placed at the left hand edge of the screen and then the Task Bar is placed on top of the GUI. The Task Bar then effectively hides the most left hand part of a program's GUI. I am not sure whether or not this is a bug in Windows 7 itself or that programs fail to recognize the fact the Task Bar being on the left hand side of the screen.
  4. - It's not Cleanmem that's messing things up but the combination of memory management of different components (Cleanmem, Windows, Browsers, etc.) on one's system. Seems things work (somewhat) different on a Win 8/Win 8.1 system as well. I also took a close look at memory management on my Win 7 system but never experienced the problems mentioned in that thread. - I would do a number of things differently: - Disable Superfetch - Move the pagefile on a different (non SSD) drive.
  5. Interesting discussion/observations on the behaviour of Cleanmem: http://forums.pcwintech.com/index.php?topic=5403
  6. - With 3 or 6 GB installed the benefits of using Cleanmem are indeed limited. But some programs have a horrible memory management (e.g. Firefox). I have 8 GB on my Win 7 system but still Cleanmem keeps memory usage low. - Reducing memory usage has another advantage. A bigger part of the memory can be used by Windows for caching data. - "Task scheduler a waste of system resources" ?? More than one program relies on Task Scheduler and therefore a process called "Taskeng.exe" is Always running. That's the engine of Task Scheduler. I don't know if I want to call that "a waste".
  7. I must rewrite this reply. CC not only doesn't show the filename of the file found (from IE 11), it also truncates the name of the file path (filename + directory name). CC seems to limit the amount characters of the file name + directory name it displays. And if the amount of characters exceeds a certain limit/amount then the entire string of characters is simply truncated. See inside the blue box in the attachment for an example. In both cases the name of the subdirectory is 8 characters in length but in the bottom lines that subdirectory name is truncated down to 5 characters. (Aren't there any IE 11 users anymore ?? Personally I won't switch to Firefox, Chrome or Opera any time soon because they have lousy memory management). Odd. In this screen CC does get the translation right of the english words in the message box (See inside the yellow box).
  8. Another language related problem: another message box that doesn't get translated in the dutch version of CC. See picture in the attachment.
  9. Came across another bug. When I run CC and let the program analyze the content of the folder(s) "Temporary Internet files" then CC won't show the name of the files it found in those folders. See attachment.
  10. Here's a new bug in CC v5.00. - The first picture shows what happens when I change the language from dutch to spanish in CC v4.19. In the spanish version the message box shows up with 2 dutch words ("Ja", "Nee". This is dutch for "Yes", "No"). I read somewhere that CC uses a feature called "Message box" (????) (incorporated in Windows itself ????) and that's the reason why those 2 dutch words show up, even when I switch to the spanish language version. - In the 2 other pictures I have switched the language from english to dutch & spanish in CC v5.00 Beta. But in both cases english words show up in the message box. (e.g. "Cancel" should be "Annuleren" or "Annuleer" in dutch). (Are the translators still busy translating ?) I came across this (translation) bug in the "Clean Register" and the "Un-install Software" section of CC v5.00 Beta. That begs the question: How many of this kind of dialog boxes are scattered & overlooked as well, throughout the program code of CC v5.0 ?
  11. I found 2 bugs in the new CC v5.00 Beta. Since I already reported these bugs before, links to those posts will suffice. 1. Bug #1: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=34072 2. Bug #2 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=36092&page=2&do=findComment&comment=255739 Additionally I made 2 screenshots of this bug. One depicts the behaviour of CC v4.19 and the other is of CC v5.00 Beta when I maximize the CC GUI. A link to my system set up can be found in the signature.
  12. O.K. I'll keep it mind. But then I need to come across a (new) bug in the latest Beta version. And I haven't (yet).
  13. But I would like to keep this thread "alive & kicking".
  14. I need to add to reply #23 of this thread that previous versions of CC (e.g. CC v4.19) do correctly recognize that I placed the Task Bar on the left hand side of the screen. So, in that regard, CC v5.00 Beta "went off the rails". This certainly is a new bug.
  15. - Came already across 2 (small) translations errors in CC v5.00 Beta. Program code being "a bit buggy" or a fault of the translator ? Need to see where & when those errors occur and that takes some more time.
  16. Bug in CC v5.00 Beta. Topic: Task Bar & the place of the CC GUI. When I want to maximize CC, the program makes a mistake. It recognizes the fact that I have the Task bar placed on the left hand side of the screen on my (freshly installed earlier this evening) Win 7 Pro system (Some programs don't recognize the task bar being on the left hand side of the screen at all or not always. Thumbs up for CC). But it miscalculates where it should place the GUI. Let's assume the task bar has a width of 4 cm then CC assumes the task bar has a width of double that amount and places the left hand edge of the CC GUI 8 cm from the left hand edge of the (visible) screen. And then the entire CC GUI shifts to the right by the same amount. The result is that not the entire CC GUI is visible on my screen. A similar thing happens when I place the Task bar at the top of the screen. But when the task bar is at the bottom of the screen or at the right hand side of the screen then this odd behaviour doesn't occur. And this odd behaviour also doesn't show up when CC is not maximized. (I daily life I use the metric system, like Kilometers (Km), centimeters (cm), etc)
  17. Yep, I had a similar call about 3 months ago. The caller claimed that he was from Microsoft and that my system was sending out spam messages. The caller wanted me to do things with my system that made me very suspicious. I played along for a short while but ultimately I simply put down the Phone. Andavari here gives me a clue what to do the next time I receive such a call. Brilliant reply !!!!
  18. - Clearing the pagefile means overwriting the content, the file is not (temporarily) removed/deleted. - Cleanmem is "kicked into action" by Task Scheduler and when it has done its job then the program closes itself. So, it only takes system resources when it's running (every 15 minutes).
  19. Here an example that Microsoft doesn't get its updates right. It was a second version of the updates. See the blue underlined tekst in the picture attached. The picture shows part of the installed updates/patches. The addition "v2" shows even MS has problems with Always getting it right the first time around.
  20. Two programs that help to improve overall system performance (2 favourite programs of mine). - PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes and therefore reduces the need for Windows to access the harddisk. And Disk I/O is relatively slow. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/cleanmem.html - Run Tweaking's Simple System Tweaker. It will make a number of socalled "Tweaks" to speed up your system. This includes disabling AERO. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_simple_system_tweaker_(formerly_simple_performance_boost).html
  21. One problem is that when Mtang uses her computer then more and more photos are in danger of being overwritten for ever. Seems (s)he doesn't want to use that system anymore.
  22. - It may sound weird but running a program called "Windows Repair all in One" (WR) (www.tweaking.com) could help. I know that in the programcode of WR there's a line that "increases system resources" (not quite sure what that means). It's a socalled "registry tweak" and that's why I don't want to provide the details of that "tweak". The safest way to do the registry tweak is to run the program. (Perhaps this registry tweak could be added to RECUVA ??).
  23. New "Windows Repair" version (v2.10.2) available. All the repairs now can be run in Safe Mode. No need for the user anymore to prepare Windows for running the program in Safe Mode, it has been automated. www.tweaking.com
  24. @Mtang: Did you select "All files" or did you tick the box "Pictures" only ? Do you know what extension those photos had (*.jpg ?) ? Do you know in which folder those photos were stored ? Selecting that folder will reduce the amount of files to be searched. If memory usage is a problem then: - Close as much programs as possible. Even those programs that run in the background. - Try to run the program in Safe Mode (Reboot system, press F8). Then Windows uses much less programs & memory. - Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem, even when not running Recuva. 2 GB is not too much for Windows 7. 4 GBs already works better. Cleanmem reduces memory usage every 15 minutes. Programs like Chrome & Firefox use LOTS of memory and are very reluctant to release that memory. Then 2 GBs of memory get very easily filled. Hence the error. I ran Recuva v1.51 on my Win 7 system (with 8 GB, I don't have memory problems) and it's memory usage went up to ~ 280 MB (See Task Manager) My system has ~173.000 files on the C: drive and Recuva found ~ 50.000 deleted files. (It found ~ 50.000 references to "deleted" files).
  25. There's a new version of Windows Repair in development. It's a "Paid for" version called "Windows Repair PRO". For more info: http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,2498.0.html If any of the readers of this thread have suggestions for the PRO version then post them in this thread and/or the "tweaking.com" website forum.
