  1. 1. I have a problem with Adobe Flash & IE 10, IE 11 on my Win 7 system. I moved from IE 9 through IE 10 and then to IE 11. But IE 11 seems to be very reluctant to work well with Adobe Flash 11 (No, not v12, the Adobe update website wants me to use v11 with IE 11). I simply wasn't able to get it working. And it also seemed IE 11 kills the GOOGLE toolbar as well. After A LOT OF hassle I went back to IE 9 and now these things work well again. Do other readers experience the same problems ?? Any suggestions ? Or perhaps it's the combination of a number of programs installed ? Like e.g. Real Player, SWF Player (for playing *.FLV files), Adobe Flash, ...................... 2. Microsoft has updated Windows (7 & 8) with an option that allows the Windows user to remove files of previous updates. These files are located in the infamous Winsxs folder. Don't know whether or not I am going to use at all. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn251566.aspx http://www.howtogeek.com/174705/how-to-reduce-the-size-of-your-winsxs-folder-on-windows-7-or-8/
  2. Frankly, I never gave it too much thought because I never "touched" Win 8 or Win 8.1. But you're right. When I look "underneath the bonnet" of Windows Repair v2.0.0 then it's clear there're a number of significant differences between Win 8 & Win 8.1. And one way those differences are expressed is that the info/data/code for the Services in the registry differs.
  3. Download a program called "Windows Repair" http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html and follow the instructions. This program can fix a significant amount of problems. You can also post your problem on the "www.Tweaking.com" website forum for support of this program.
  4. New version of "Windows Repair" (v2.2.0) available. More repairs available for Win 8. (How long will Win 8 last ???)
  5. I have seen these ads on many sites. Even on websites where I didn't take out a subscription. No, I wasn't fooled.
  6. Ooooooops .............. Well, the OP at least looked like a genuine poster. Does the OP get banned ? If I were a moderator I would ban him.

  8. It still is. Quote: "Full 64-bit compatibility - Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8" I overlooked that part. Well, that would be good reason for me to buy the Pro version.
  9. @Alan: Never had any problems with the free version.
  10. - Marketing ploy from HP ? Absolutely !!! If there's popular demand for Win 7, then HP WILL bow !!!!! - But also a damning verdict about Win 8 from HP. The fact that MS seems to be working on Win 9 ("ahead of schedule") is a "poke in the eye" for Win 8, as well. According to my info, HP is also the manufacturer of GOOGLE's "Chrome book" ?????? But that would be an additional "poke in the eye" for MS. Very little good news for MS nowadays. No wonder MS brought out a "Windows Update Fix for XP". Seems MS finally seem to start listening to their customers demands. The overall pattern becomes clearer and clearer.
  11. @Krit86lr: - Try REVO uninstaller. When the program removes a program then it also removes info from the registry. Even the free version is good !!! - Never tried Piriform's Speccy ? It can tell you more about your graphic card (beyond it's from Intel)
  12. - Find a good Anti virus program that still supports and will support XP in the future. - Put all your computers behind a hardware router, don't connect to the internet directly. - MS Security Essentials will support XP until mid 2015. - I also still like XP but alas my old XP laptop doesn't have wireless hardware installed. To use wireless internet I was forced to move to my Win 7 laptop.
  13. And this news is another reason why - IMO - MS is quite hesitant to quit supporting XP & MSE. "Bank ATMs are still running on XP". http://redmondmag.com/blogs/the-schwartz-report/2014/01/atms-still-run-windows-xp.aspx O.M.G !!!!!! According to Shane ( www.Tweaking.com ) there won't be a SP 2 for Win 7 or a SP 4 for XP. http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,1704.0.html
  14. I did read it. It reminded me that I had to update my system with the january 2014 updates. I already had the december 2013 updates and I remember it still was a nightmare. I just wanted to post my experiences with WU on my XP system. Did the readers of this thread read this article ? http://redmondmag.com/articles/2013/12/17/xp-resource-hog-problem.aspx
  15. I updated my XP system (with 1 MB of RAM) yesterday and it seems (!!!) the bug in WU was fixed. Previously it could take as much as 1 hour to get the new updates installed. But now it only took WU some 10 minutes to search my system for the configuration set up. But total memory usage (of 1 MB of total memory) of "wuauclt.exe" (~ 140 MB max) & one "Svchost.exe" (~ 330 MB max) process was still (relatively) high. And WU still uses LOTS of memory.( sometimes over 60%) My personal opinion is that the source for this horrible behaviour also was "hidden" in the update software located in the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" subfolder. So, it seems MS has fixed the problem or have found a "workaround" for this strange behaviour. I think we'll see a new Windows Update in february. We'll have to see how WU behaves next month.
  16. This is indeed very good news. I manually turned off Windows Update on my XP machine. Only enabled it once every month. They still need WU to function well in XP for the MS Security Essentials updates until april 2015. It also suggests that someone who hasn't updated XP for a very long while will still be able to install the last updates after april of this year. I still think issueing a new Service Pack (#4) is actually the best solution. It would be the best sign MS still cares for XP users and then MS can remove all previous XP updates from their website. If not, then I certainly would hope MS would continue to provide older XP updates for XP users. Or is MS going to remove those updates as well ?
  17. @Krit86: Back in march 2013 I was confused about the relationship between the two. Please read the entire thread. I also needed the info for helping to develop a program called "Windows Repair". http://www.tweaking.com/
  18. According to info from the internet, MSE installs a second service called "MpFilter". http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/MpFilter.sys-27631.html
  19. @Krit86: Are you sure you REALLY disabled those Services ? Because I know that some Services (E.g. MS Security Essentials) have set permissions to an elevated level and that prevents the Service from being disabled when the user has not enough rights. Other possibilities: - Perhaps some programs have added info to the registry that makes Windows automatically re-install those programs & Services. - Programs also could have added shortcuts to one or more of the "Start Up" folders. And those folders are buried rather deep in Windows. - Your problem also suggests that those programs have placed installation software somewhere on your harddisk. E.g., I know I can remove Apple's Quicktime from my system but that the QT installation software won't be removed at the same time.
  20. I DO hope MS will offer a new Service Pack (#4) for XP in April. It would make life much easier for all the remaining XP users (me included). But I fear it won't happen.
  21. Topic: Search function. I need to add more info regarding this bug. And it certainly is a BUG !!!! The bug, as described above in the previous post, only happens when DF does a "Search" for the first time after the user has started the program. The second time DF behaves as it should. This can be one of those "Minor bug fixes" the developers are talking about. Needs to be improved !!!!
  22. Excellent point. So, one needs to find a new AV program for XP.
  23. Makes sense. When MS ends support for XP then MS also will end MSE support for XP. But, according to my info, when one is behind a router and has a Firewall (from MS or any other brand) installed then one should be OK. Although I would like to see MS issue one more Service Pack including the last MSE version. I still like XP very much.
  24. And the extra tax revenues are also VERY welcome for ANY government, right ? Uruguay did something similar in december 2013 http://rt.com/news/uruguay-legalizes-sale-marijuana-987/ I have to make a tough choice: Do I move to Colorado or Uruguay ?
