  1. I noticed that Defraggler doesn't show the defragmented files of the System Restore points any more. Is something wrong with the latest version of the program of has this been done deliberately ? Is this new in the program code of the last version ?
  2. - The article itself seems to be missing one JAVA update. JAVA is already advanced to v7.67 (not v7.65). - Excellent idea of MS. I have seen systems which still have version 6.
  3. Yes, and I know there're more updates coming.
  4. New program available on www.tweaking.com: Envelope Printer. http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/tweaking_com_envelope_printer.html Already in version v1.30.
  5. I know. Windows Update keeps nagging me that I should install updates for Office 2010. When I do that Windows Update wants me to install the same updates once again. (I also still use Office 2003). One simply can't tick all boxes and let all updates to be installed.
  6. I didn't know there was already a thread on this subject ..................................
  7. Although Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows XP, there's a way to continue receiving new (!!!) security updates. http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/simple_registry_hack_allows_xp_to_update_security.html When wants to re-install XP then Microsoft refuses to supply any updates that were released BEFORE april 2014. But there's a program that's able to break that blockade: Tweaking's Windows Repair !!!! http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,2217.0.html
  8. The published Speccy snapshot won't reveal any sensitive personal info.
  9. - Doesn't a (web-)server keep track of when a file has been accessed ?
  10. New version of "Windows Repair" available. Version v2.80 now can repair the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) as well. It turned out that the sequence in which the appropriate files are registered does matter. Now the program does register those files in the proper sequence. and that does fix a broken VSS. It also turns out that VSS is also very (what would call) "brittle" and easily broken. http://www.tweaking.com/ http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_windows_repair.html
  11. The answer MrV gave assumes that the computer user: - never changes his/her computer system - never buys a new computer system. - still remembers, still has the weblink to the relevant Speccy snapshot. I think it's better to limit the availability to say 2, 3, or 5 years after the last time the snapshot was accessed. One always can rerun Speccy again and produce a new snapshot.
  12. Agree. FileHippo was Always a "clean" file hosting website. But on the other hand, I am surprised to see it took them so long to add "adware" offers as well. File hosting isn't free, remember ?

    Help with Speccy

I need help to interpret the data/info Speccy is pulling from one's computer. Although I am not a computer expert, I have helped friends and a few people on the internet who had problems with their computer and knew even less. I also advised them to run Speccy to have a clue of what's ailing their system. And I must say, it certainly is a excellent tool to pull up info from one's system. E.g. "Bleeping Computer" uses extensively Speccy. The fact that Speccy allows the user to publish a snapshot on the internet is a giant succes giving the program an edge over other programs. Some Speccy info gave a clear signal of what was wrong. But some sections of the Speccy info remain murky for me. - Speccy pulls up data from the SMART feature of harddisks but I don't know how to interpret those readings. What values are regarded to be safe, what values would send a warning signal and what values are outright dangerous. - Speccy also pulls info about processes/programs that are responsible for pulling data from the internet. And that info remains a mystery as well. See e.g. this Speccy weblink. http://speccy.piriform.com/results/gzwGEPPCxDR0Ljf5KhhxQqx One process called "Javaw.exe" (PID 508) has multiple lines under "Network", "Current TCP Network Connections". And I haven't the faintest clue what all these lines mean ("Listen", "Querying", "Established", "Closed", etc.). Do all lines mean that "Javaw.exe" opens multiple connections on one's internet connection ? Then it wouldn't surprise me that this is/could be the reason why this person's system is so slow.
  14. 1) Yes, it does. 2) In spite of the warning people seems to want to defrag an SSD anyway. 3) My advice: Don't defrag your SSD. It's already much faster than a hard disk.
  15. 11.6 free memory & 11.2 GB cached ?? Do you mean 11.6 GB available ?? http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windows-7-memory-usage-whats-the-best-way-to-measure/1786
  16. I know this has been discussed (to death ??) before but I wanted to post it anyway. I came across - IMO - very interesting info regarding Prefetch & Superfetch. http://www.osnews.com/story/21471/SuperFetch_How_it_Works_Myths It refers to 3 other articles written on the Microsoft website. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.03.vistakernel.aspx
  17. Read this thread: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=36971
  18. You're right. The title doesn't cover the content of the article.
  19. China banned Win 8 from being used on government computers. Germany banned Win 8 use for selected government departments. http://www.testosteronepit.com/home/2014/5/21/china-bans-windows-8-from-government-computers-after-leaked.html
  20. Speccy shows all the processes that are running. I would like to see that Speccy also counts the amount of processes running and show that total at the start or at the end of the process list.
  21. The Malicious Software Removal Tool does get used by Microsoft. I - at least - noticed it once that it's run before installing a new version of IE. I also made a shortcut to it and placed it on my desktop and use it every now & then. But indeed, as mentioned above, it never found something. I think MS should bring it more to the attention of the users and not hide it somewhere deep "under the bonnet".
  22. Sure. Although the size of SSDs has increased, the information remains relevant. I have a laptop and won't use a SSD anytime soon. The suggestions how to use "junction points" can be of use to increase the life of one's SSD.
  23. Came across some very interesting info regarding increasing the life of a SSD. http://blog.superuser.com/2011/05/10/maximizing-the-lifetime-of-your-ssd/
  24. Did some more research. On my system (win 7 Ultimate) the bug does occur. But it only happens the first time after a startup of CC. The second time I select the line all is well. Odd. See pictures.
