  1. Oh No. When I look at a number of things I come to the conclusion that "the end is nigh" could very well apply to MORE things than one can imagine. Regarding Apple: I DO think Apple realizes that they can run out of buyers one day and are trying to find a new revenu source.
  2. Apple is annoying its users. (And I thought it was limited to Microsoft). http://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2015/07/25/apple-music-damaging-reputation/ Then Apple wants to the check balance of one's credit card and based on that info advertisements will be shown for products that one can afford. http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=230392 http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-patent-for-e-commerce-and-mobile-advertising-system-2015-7?r=US&IR=T
  3. Windows RTM released: http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-10-news-recap-rtm-released-campaign-announcement-and-more One can already pre-order Win 10 on a USB stick. But those sticks will be shipped from august 16th onwards. http://www.winbeta.org/news/pre-order-windows-10-usb-drive-amazon-available-august-16th
  4. - When did you use Defraggler for the last time ? Compare that with the dates & times when these files were created. - Run Defraggler another time. Does it create more of those files (look at time & date created & modified). - Run Piriform's CCleaner to delete a bunch of files.
  5. - And what happens when you click on "Operating System" in the navigation pane to open the "Operating System" screen ?
  6. - I remember Hazelnut replied to a similar "advertisement" I posted say 2 years ago, with "Not large enough". So, I thought she perhaps would be interested now. - I would love to BUY it !!! Nice place to retire, right ?? But alas Idaho USA is, for me, almost on the other side of the planet. And can't afford it. A REAL pity.
  7. Nice little piece of real estate for sale. Just cough up $ 30 to $ 50 million and it's yours. http://money.cnn.com/video/luxury/2015/07/08/lehman-bros-estate.cnnmoney/index.html
  8. You're spot on. I tried it myself and it didn't work. I had 7 files, each larger than 1 Mb and smaller than 2 Mb, each with 2 fragments or more. Then I told DF to do a "Quick Defrag" but DF didn't touch those files, they didn't get defragmented. I thought that perhaps did it work but that the file list wasn't updated. But even after re-analyzing the drive showed that those files remained fregmented. Thumbs up for Olliebean !!!!
  9. - I also experience (minor) problems with the CLEANMEM (v2.51) tray icon. It doesn't Always show up when my laptop comes out of hibernation. The mini monitor is still running but the tray icon doesn't show up in the system tray. - However there could (!!!!) be a VERY simple explanation for this behaviour. When I kill & restart the process "Explorer.exe" then some system tray icons don't show up anymore because the process that controls the tray icon seem to forget to update/refresh the icon every say 30 seconds or so. I have 2 such processes. - I need to watch the behaviour of the mini monitor & tray icon before I am sure this is actually happening. For the time being it's remains an "educated guess".
  10. - It's quite simple.Just defrag all the files in the "C:\Windows" & "C:\ProgramData" folders. That will do the job. The registry is made up of several files placed in different spots. - Compacting the registry is a diiferent thing. This has been asked for many times. Since it never has been included in CCleaner or Defraggler one has to assume that the developers don't want such a thing included in Defraggler. But there're programs available that can compact the registry. E.g. Eusing's Free Registry Defragmentation.
  11. - Agree. By vetting the apps Apple reduces the risk of problems. - The owner of the website mentioned above is a fan of Blackberry. In spite of all the negative news Blackberry seems to be doing rather well (financially). And that could the reason why he is bashing Apple.
  12. I can't come up with a reason why Samsung would do this ? Don't they see that this, in the long run, would hurt Samsung ? Did they develop their own new Operating System ? Is this a devious scheme to force users buy, paid for, updates ? Is Samsung seeking a larger income stream ? Does Samsung hate Windows ?
  13. http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=230257 And people are bashing Microsoft .......................
  14. @Hazelnut: - I know !!!! But since I (still) use & like IE, I wanted to bring this to the attention of the readers of this forum. Indeed, IE 11 is much better than the previous ones (IE 8, 9 & 10) - Tried Firefox and Chrome but didn't like those browsers too much, for a number of reasons. - I was/am reducing the amount of emails and wanted to share these articles.
  15. Came across a "How to Geek" article that has a very positive opinion on Internet Explorer 10 & 11. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32372/htg-explains-why-do-so-many-geeks-hate-internet-explorer/ The article also explains why IE 10 & 11 are actually much safer than previous versions. Malware now targets Chrome more & more because Chrome is used much more. The article above refers to another HTG article that tells that extensions are collecting information. But that information gathering can also be disabled in some cases.
  16. - About 3 to 4 weeks ago I was forced to re-install MS Works 2003. But this time MS did't offer any of the Office/Works updates anymore. I assume this will also be the case for any newer MS Office version older than Office 2013/Office 365. - For a long time Win 7 & Vista users were able to LEGALLY download the installation file(s) for their OS. But those downloads also (seem) to have been removed.from the internet. (I still have a Win 7 Pro ISO for my system). http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/566303/microsoft-digital-river-iso-downloads-gone-for-good/ (Are there any Win 8 *.iso downloads available any more ?) In other words, MS wants to "discourage" any re-installation of XP, Vista, Win 7 (& Win 8 ??). And wants to push the users to Win 10. From a commercial standpoint I can understand that but I am sure MS will, using this policy, make more enemies than new friends.
  17. - Tried to see whether I could discover a pattern with regard to changing the view from "Modern" to "Original". Installed & removed DF v2.19 a number of times but it seems DF simply doesn't show a predictable pattern. Two times DF started with "Modern" view for the file list and in the rest of the times it started with the "Original" view for the file list. Odd. Does this behaviour depends on the existence of a "Secret" registry setting ? Or does some other program interferes with the program ? Or is this dependent whether of not the user wants the settings to be saved in a "*.ini" file ?
  18. One reason it doesn't work too well is that DF moves files to the beginning of the drive and can create a conflict with the OS that also wants to add new files. Hence the increased defragmentation. DF has work with Windows and Windows has it own set of thoughts/logic. So, I would not neccesarily put all the blame on DF.
  19. @Nikki605: - This is what I get when I "unsubscribe" to Win 10 on my dutch (!!!) Win 7 system and open "Windows Update" in Control Panel. See attachment. When I "subscribe" to Win 10 then the blue area turns white. - Yes, the Win 10 system tray icon keeps popping up but I let Cleanmem kill the process "GWX.exe" but I am not going to un-install the "update" (KB3035583) itself. Only un-installing that update will completely remove all Win 10 notifications. But I can live with it. - See also e.g. this article: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-remove-windows-10-nag-messages-3614204/
  20. @Andavari: In XP I pulled (for a long time span) the Original update files from the folders with the temporary internetfiles. I wrote down the size & name and then it was easy to find the files.
  21. I don't know. If those files are (much) smaller than the updates recommended then I suppose you can delete them. But if Windows Updates needs those files then it will re-create them.
  22. http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/windows-10-faq
  23. Go to the MS Win 10 FAQ section for more instructions
  24. - One also can try to pull the files from the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder (alas AFTER installation). But that 's more difficult because one doesn't know in what format (*.exe, *.cab, *.msu, etc.) they are. - When it comes to drivers, it's difficult to pull them from the MS website. Better to go to the manufacturer's website. - When one searches for a particular file then MS sometimes will only show the "x86" (32 bit) version. Then some extra added info - like e.g. "x64" (64 bit) or "Windows 7" - will do the trick to let GOOGLE pull up the right webpage.
  25. It's even worse. When I switch from "Original view" (for me the preferred state) back to "Modern view" then the checkboxes for the file list remain in the "Original" state. So, the developers didn't pay too much attention to what happened with the checkboxes when switching "views".
