  1. - DF (v2.21) still has a problem with (not) showing the System Restore Points (SRPs). I told DF that I didn't want to see those SRPs in the file map but after a re-analyzing the drive those SRPs still showed up. I had to restart DF to make those changes (in-)visible in the file map. - The option that allows the user to choose whether or not SRPs and/or Hiberfil.sys should show up in the file map, should be using different words. I consider the wording of that option to be confusing. And perhaps the entire setup of that option should be changed & improved. - I fear the developers of Piriform won't devote too much time on improving DF anymore since an increasing % of users have a SSD in their computer.
  2. - Are there no updates for Win 7 this month ? Or are they released later this month ? Is MS too busy fixing bugs in the latest Win 10 release ?
  3. - But is Microsoft going to include in those "roll up" updates the "Optional" updates as well ? I certainly hope they won't. Because those "Optional" updates contain the Win 10 nagware.
  4. - It's Task Scheduler that manages all the scheduled tasks, not Task Manager. - It's an error that's occuring on a lot of systems. - Tasks are registered in the registry as well. And that's where the problem is. Try the following: - Remove the task (Ccleaner) and re-install Defraggler. - This thread could provide a solution, (Never tried it myself) http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,4419.0.html
  5. http://www.infoworld.com/article/3030211/microsoft-windows/experts-recommend-dont-install-microsoft-patch-kb-3123862.html I have a list of 33 "optional" updates I didn't (& won't) install. And KB 3035583 & KB 3123862 are two of them.
  6. - Defragmenting an external HD is Always (much) slower. - I let the program list the fragmented files and then let DF defragment those files only.
  7. - Don't (try to) delete them. "Svchost.exe" are the processes controlling the Services, an essential part of Windows. And one of those Services the Firewall or Windows Update. You can't disable Svchost.exe but you can (temporarily) disable the Windows Update Service.
  8. - 53 to 58 degrees is already much better. - Make sure there's enough free room around the computer case for the air to flow freely. Like a human being a computer system also needs to be able to "breathe". Could also lower the temperature (somewhat). - My personal opinion is that Win 7 and newer require at least 4 GB of memory. Open Resource Monitor (memory tab). http://www.howtogeek.com/school/using-windows-admin-tools-like-a-pro/lesson6/all/ If the "In Use" memory remains at say 90% or more for most of the time then adding more memory is certainly an option. Then memory is the most pressing issue for you.
  9. - Microsoft is going to reduce the amount of Updates each month. Each month, all the "non security updates" for a number of Windows versions will be packaged into one single Update. Source: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/05/17/simplifying-updates-for-windows-7-and-8-1/ - Look at the title of this webarticle: "Simplifying Updates for Win 7 & Win 8" !!! - The article annouces the "Convenience Roll Up" for Win 7 SP 1as well !!! - The article contains these words: "we’re making available a new convenience rollup for Windows 7 SP1" Were there any previous "Roll Up" updates for Win 7 SP 1 ???
  10. - This article lists the fixes that aren't included in the "Roll Up": https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125574 So, the user still needs to install 23 updates.
  11. - The "Happy Elder Geek" who started the "Roll Up" thread on the "Tweaking.com" website/forum (See weblink above) has updated that thread and now reports that the "Roll Up" didn't work on 3 other Win 7 systems. Perhaps one needs to have a Win 7 system that hasn't been "tampered with" (too much). - In the name of "Roll Up" there was the addition "v4". In other words it took MS already four attempts to get a stable Update. Perhaps MS will release more (& better) versions of that "Roll Up" update in the future. - I downloaded the "Roll Up" and that other update but I will NOT install the "Roll Up" any time soon. I will do that only when I decide to re-install Win 7. NOT one second sooner.
  12. @Trium: Thanks. Very useful list. @login123: I would recommend to install the "optional" KB 2852386 update. It updates the build-in "Disk Clean Up" tool. After that a user can SAFELY delete A LOT OF files from the bloated "C:\Windows\winsxs" folder. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2852386
  13. - Last april I had to re-install Win 7 SP 1. But I didn't install all the "Optional" Updates. And one of those "Optional" updates was the update that installed the Win 10 nagware. The name of that nagware update was KB 3035583.
  14. - I think that IF I am going to install the "Roll Up", I will do a clean fresh re-install of Win 7 SP 1 first. - The "How to Geek" article contains one small error. Update KB 3020369 was released in april 2015 and not in april 2016. - "How To Geek" provides info on how to slipstream the "Roll Up". http://www.howtogeek.com/255540/the-last-windows-7-iso-youll-ever-need-how-to-slipstream-the-convenience-rollup/
  15. - If CPU time of one "Svchost.exe" process is high (25% or more) and/or using A LOT OF memory then it could be "Windows Update" related. Open Resource Monitor (Processor tab) and see under "Services". If the Service called "Wuauserv" is using a lot of CPU then (temporarily) disable that Service. Then that CPU time should drop to zero and the CPU itself should cool down after say 2 to 5 minutes. - Enable Windows Update every day for a short while. Perhaps then it will be able to obtain the updates for your system. Just be patient.
  16. - "Tweaking.com" also had a thread on this topic. http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php?topic=4542 - The Windows 10 nagware doesn't seem to be included. That was one of those "Optional" updates and those don't seem to be included.
  17. - Looks like Microsoft had too many complaints about the VERY large amount of downloads one needs for Win 7 & Win 7 SP 1 - The article also mentions/suggests that MS will provide socalled "Cumulative Updates". But I assume those will also include the Win 10 "nagware". Right ? - Or MS wants to know how popular this update is. - One question remains. Is this available for non english versions of Win 7 as well ?
  18. - What are the temperatures now ? Does the CPU have a fan ? Does those fans make good contact with the e.g. CPU ? Sometime one needs to add a (fresh) layer of heat conducting paste between the fan and the e.g. CPU. - Is perhaps a process called "svchost.exe" using a lot of memory and CPU ? it also can push the temperature of the CPU higher. (People are having this kind of problem recently and it's Windows Update related).
  19. - Did you disable IE 11 ? I could imagine that then CC greys out that IE option. - I know that some programs use & need IE in spite of not being used by a user. E.g. when one opens a *.gif picture. To see the animated picture it needs IE.
  20. - Your CPU & motherboard are HOT !!! (both 78 degrees C) but your HD is OK (only 39 ). - To check whether or not your fans are running or defective you need to open your computer case (I assume it's a desktop computer ?? because it has two fans ??) and just see if the fans are working. Or can you see/feel a flow of air ? (Running Win 10 Pro on a 2GB system and a 150 GB HD ? I would recommend to have at least 4GB. But I don't know if your motherboard can handle that much (DDR2) memory).
  21. - SPECCY does recognize my laptop has a i5 Intel 520M CPU. (See my signature). - Odd, would the presence of Win 8 (somewhat) mislead SPECCY ?
  22. - Sometimes SPECCY can't make up it's mind. I came across one example of where the program thought someone had a i3 or i5 or i7 Intel CPU but according to the writer of the post he/she had a Celeron CPU. - And the user had a "5xxxx" Intel CPU. Odd, very odd. See reply #6 in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/593347/dell-inspiron-15-badly-recurrent-crashes/
  23. - @GoneToPlaid: How do you see that the drive was that old ? I see the "Power On Count" and the "Power On Time" but I fail to see how you conclude the drive is 7 years old. - "Kokopelli" 's system is a desktop and that also helps to increase the life of the HD. The desktop just simply goes nowhere and is (much) less exposed to (physical) movements/shocks.
  24. - @LUE: I do understand that're only wanted to report a bug. - The last screenshot suggests that that part of the SPECCY programcode does recognize of "what's going on".
  25. Bug in Defraggler ??? I was fiddling with the size of the pagefile and then something horrible happened. I told Windows that I wanted no pagefile. Had to restart my system and then Defraggler tried to defrag a number of systemfiles upon start up (before the bulk of the Windows software was loaded). At that point DF got stuck when it tried to defrag the pagefile. No matter what I tried, each time I restarted my system got stuck somewhere in the very early stages of the start procedure of Windows. I am not sure whether or not I should put the blame on DF. It could be a combination of some other things. But perhaps DF isn't able to properly handle this kind of situation.
