    Adblock

Why Adblock over Adblock Plus? I've never heard a reason for this. I use Plus with Filterset G Updater.....just install it and forget it, for the most part.

  5. So what are the remaining post-trial features? Same as before?
  6. Per their rate chart, it had cost 2.1 cents/min to the US or Canada.
  7. Skype is very similar to Yahoo Messenger's ver. 7.x's net phone feature. You can connect to other Skype users directly (PC to PC) and have better than telephone sound quality (equivalent to Google Talk, for example). You can also dial to the PSTN (regular telephones) both domestic and international from Skype or Yahoo Messenger, which is a prepaid service from both. Skype is offering this service free for calls to the US and Canada as a promotional trial. Just download the program, fill in a few blanks on the install, and make a call.
  8. I just had to download/install the program, enter my home number and it worked. No settings to configure or anything. Interestingly, the number on my home phone's caller ID was 1-000-012-3456. I've called a few others to test it out...no problems.
  9. Just appeared in File Hippo. Also the 'slim' on the website is the new version.
  10. I've referred CCleaner to a few Win98/98SE users, and none of them can see the results from running Analyze or Run Cleaner the first time. When they run Run Cleaner immediately afterwards, the results displayed appears with '0 bytes removed'.
  11. I'm on the one-year trial with eTrust. I've turned on several friends to it also. I was about to suggest it to someone again, but when I checked the website today, I can't find the one-year trial listed. Did they stop it?
  12. UP, Are you talking about this? http://www.agnitum.com/products/tauscan/index.php
  13. Maxthon has that. I'm surprised it took the church of mozilla that long to catch on.
  14. If someone gets in my house and installs physical devices on my PC, then I probably have bigger problems than spyware.
  15. Their system was inaccessible for updates earlier today. There was a huge update (3-4MB) yesterday. How do you know the realtime scanners aren't working?
  16. He may be an attention whore, but is he wrong?
  17. I'm hoping this is a known issue already. A friend says when he's filling out personal information on a website (in this case, his address/city/state/zip) and he hits Send or Continue, when redisplayed it appears with the wrong characters in one of more of the fields. I don't know on what sites this happens or other specific info just yet, but he did contact tech support for his PC and Microsoft about it, which to me means it's happening on different sites. Either way, he said both tech supports pointed the finger at the other, so he's back at square one. This is all the info I have so far. I'm guessing it has to do with an encryption conflict on secure sites. Again, I'm hoping others have heard of this happening and can point me somewhere.
  18. rridgely, Is the GRC site's 'All Service Ports' test definitive, or should one run other tests from Gibson's site or from another site to be thorough?

    Software Faq

This is going to be the freeware thread part II. Why don't you just put up a link to File Hippo's main page and be done with it? And...any DVD drive that's included with a PC will have playback software. Therefore, any other player is not essential. By essential, I mean something one needs for the PC and doesn't have. I read rridgely's post to mean the same thing. I assume he means this thread would answer the question: "I just got a PC from x company. It has x OS, x drives, x devices connected, and I plan to use it for [home business/gaming/video editing/etc.]. I haven't ordered any software for it. What else do i need?" If rridgely has other intentions for this thread, I'll hush.

    Software Faq

My 2 cents: I think this thread is unnecessary, mostly because most anyone who comes to this forum has more than a basic understanding of PC's, and therefore know already what's essential for their needs Then, considering what's essential is more about common sense than based on opinions or favorites. For example: Media Player Classic - all Windows PC's will come with WMP installed. There is no essential need for a substitute. Open Office - If someone has a need for MS Office, they probably purchased it with their PC. If they develop a need later, they're unlikely to trust an open source equivalent right away for a business application. (People don't buy Excel just to play with it.) Now, if someone thinks it would be convenient to have Open Office on their PC if they want to bring work home, etc., then it's nice to have a free alternative available. Essential? Hardly. Adobe PDF Reader/Foxit, Winzip/WinRAR - These are essential for web surfing. One is compromised by not having both. Firefox/Maxthon/etc. - The PC comes with a browser. FF is more secure and more feature-rich. Borderline essential.
  22. Hmm...that's a new take. What makes you say that?
