    Friday 13th

Seeing that its Friday the 13th I was wondering where the HijackThis log helpers have disappeared to?
  2. Windows Defender comes standard with Vista but has to be downloaded and installed for XP and I like it. At my advancing age I can use all the help I can get.
  3. That reminds me of the famous line from the French Connection movie where Popeye Doyle asked Do you still pick your nose in Poughkeepsie? I used to go to Poughkeepsie a lot for training on the large IBM mainframes when its storage was comprised of 64K bits of ferrite doughnuts and the hard drives were large boxes that held 10MB The training was usually 3 months at a time so I got to travel around the area quite a bit visiting the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and the Catskill Mountains.
  4. In Windows Explorer go to Folder Options then View then select Do not cache thumbnails then Apply to All Folders
  5. Its not a bad little utility but it does make Windows Defender pop up an event when it runs.
  6. Hmm?I copy-n-pasted from the forum site but the Download site says build 16. Edit: build 17 is available from the forum: http://forum.avantbrowser.com/viewtopic.ph...c5b37d91c7b72df

  8. Before you run around yelling The Sky Is Falling! The Sky Is Falling! please permit us to help you discover what the problem is and help you remove it. What is your operating system and Service Packs installed.
  9. SpywareBlaster 4.1 Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one of these unwanted fiends! The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available. Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

  14. I tried it and its OK but it consumed a large amount of virtual RAM which was about 40MB if I remember correctly and it constantly popped up warning that things had changed when I was trying something.
  15. Secunia is Java based and is accessed on-line. FileHippo's Update Checker is a downloaded application that can run off-line and can be updated on-line.

  17. Avast there mate. I use avast! Home free on my 256MB RAM WinME, 512MB RAM XP Home and my 768MB RAM XP Pro systems and work well.
  18. I prefer to not have a software based firewall but then I have a hardware firewall that is embedded in the DSL modem that my ISP supplies that works effectively and silently not consuming any system resources. A lot of work has already been done on the HOSTS file for you in hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files plus the excellent HOSTS files manager HostsMan and its browsing speedup proxy HostsServer: http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm http://www.abelhadigital.com The HOSTS file also works for Linux as well and hpHosts provides a Linux version for it.

I have a toothache and I guess my brain became a bit addled with the painkillers I'm taking and when I read BOclean it became BHOclean. hazelnut is correct in that it is an anti-malware application but I'm not a fan of any Comodo applications as they appear to cause system problems and issue false positive malware indications. I'll stick with MBAM and Windows Defender. We were all new at one time and having a place such as this and helpful folks that donate their valuable and probably scarce free time is tremendous plus producing free tools to keep our systems clean and running smoothly is a testament for good Human behavior.
  20. I would not trust any application that adds an entry to the Winsock LSP chain because ALL of your data is capable of being captured and being used for bad purposes. I use avast! Home Free and it checks incoming and outgoing email for me without the need to modify the Winsock LSP chain. There is an avast Premium version that has more functions and I think I'll purchase it when I can afford it.

A BHO is a Browser Helper Object commonly called a Toolbar like the Google Toolbar or Windows Live Toolbar BHOClean helps disable/enable those Toolbars but I prefer to use Add/Remove Programs to un-install it if I don't want it.
  22. They play pretty good music for Heavy Metal band.

I qualify for a Senior's discount and usually I don't have to show proof of age as my silver hair and beard attest to my Senior years.

  25. mikeron, welcome. I never have had a connection problem with my Network Connection not working after running CCleaner on my WinME, XP Home nor Pro systems. Who is your ISP? How do you connect? DSL or cable or dial-up?
