  1. The Rules Of Spam Rule #1: Spammers lie. Russel's Admonition: Always assume that there is a measurable chance that the entity you are dealing with is a spammer. Lexical Contradiction: Spammers will redefine any term in order to disguise their abuse of Internet resources. Sharp's Corollary: Spammers attempt to re-define "spamming" as that which they do not do. http://bruce.pennypacker.org/spamrules.html
  2. I'm glad your problem is fixed. There is no charge for the off the point discussion and it relieves the boredom and the durn aching molar pain until the drugs kick in
  3. I have a good set of headphones and I totally forgot about them. I'm gona use the Senior's moment defense yer 'oner
  4. That will get rid of the sqm files but not the multiple Folders reported by fredvries that may have something to do with multiple Hotmail sign in IDs.
  5. I'm not sure. The MSN Live application is not that old so maybe other users can comment on what they see.
  6. I'm not impressed with Logitech software as at one time it placed a huge amount of entries in the registry making HijackThis logs very hard to read. I do have a Logitech R-20 speaker set hooked up to my XP Home system that is driven by a Creative Audigy2 sound card that is quite good but I dare not turn it up much as the subwoofer would send the sound to the apartment next to and below me getting the people angry at me. Roy Orbison's Greatest Hits, The Best Of the Moody Blues and Bruce Springsteen's are among some of the CDs I have.
  7. That brings back a wee ald sang:
  8. After running Windows Live Messenger or Hotmail Live I see quite a few sqm files left over that can be cleaned out by CCleaner's winapp2.ini but the following has to be added in the correct place [*MSN Messenger]LangSecRef=3021Detect=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MessengerServiceDefault=TrueFileKey1=%UserProfile\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\872637960\|*.* I could not get the sqm files to delete in the root of the boot drive though?
  9. Please post an example. By the way, do you see UPHClean events? Type: Information Date: 6/18/2008 Time: 3:07:47 AM Event: 1001 Source: UPHClean Category: None User: N/A Computer: IBMKS1 Description: User profile hive cleanup service version 1.6.30.0 started successfully.
  10. I investigate MsiInstaller errors as that means an install failed Security usually has nothing of interest but my XP Home system accumulates a lot of those events but the XP Pro system does not Service control manager errors should be investigated Application error events should be investigated if they occur Internet Explorer events always seem to be blank even though I use IE7 I like Event Log Explorer: http://www.eventlogxp.com Why not copy-n-paste an error event from the MsiInstaller failure here. By the way Google will provide lots of information on Event log entries.
  11. I disagree. But then I don't work for the FBI nor CIA nor Canadian CSIS organizations and I'm not into kiddy pr0n so whatever is on my hard drive is pretty boring stuff unless the fact that I like to watch British comedy and CBC streaming news and the occasional streaming PBS program is considered some form of subversive or terrorist act. By the way, the latest PBS program Mystery of the Megavolcano that aired last night was facinating. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/megavolcano

  13. That kinda looks like spam to me
  14. The Brits have an expression that uses that term to indicate that something is really messed up
  15. That's from November 3, 2001 and that's like information that the Dinosaurs could have used to to prevent their extinction. Its talking about index.dat files that do keep site information if not cleaned out occasionally which CCleaner will clean on a reboot if selected with Delete Index.dat files and about cookies and IE History that CCleaner also will clean out.
  16. I'm retired and only started to work on PCs when IBM released its PC back in '82 I believe. I was in hardware support and we got the first training and systems to support customers that purchased them but they were expensive at about $5000.00 for a system with an 8088 4MHZ processor and 16MB RAM and one 5 1/4 floppy drive with DOS 1.0. Thank goodness for Moore and his Law. I recently salvaged a PC that was about to go in the garbage so I took it apart and cleaned out all the dust bunnies and fired it up and it worked but it only had 32MB RAM and a 1.5GB hard drive so I installed a spare 2.0GB hard drive as master and the other as slave and I installed Win98SE on it and an Ethernet adapter card so that it could connect to my router. I installed all the available Windows Updates for it and it worked fine. I even figured out how to get the audio card running so that it could play music. I sold it at a bazaar about two months ago to a lady who had never had a PC before for $50.00 including an old monitor I had and gave her about an hour lesson on how to use it and she is happy with it. She did not have Internet access so when she wanted that she contacted Sympatico and installed the lowest speed DSL available and she is now using Hotmail to talk to her grandkids.
  17. Its a wonder anything modern works on a 10 year old operating system.
  18. I don't have Vista so I can't try it but the utility is from Microsoft's Mark Russinovich so Microsoft Technical support should be able to answer that question.
  19. I used to do a lot of presentations with my laptop so I would close the lid and trundle off to the presentation then upon my return resume the system after I had re-connected to the LAN only to be greeted with the dreaded Unable to connect message. A reboot was the only thing that would reset the PCMCIA LAN card so I gave up on Standby.
  20. I don't use Ad Blocker as it uses too much system resources. I prefer hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files: http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm I manage them with HostsMan and its browser speed up proxy HostsServer: http://www.abelhadigital.com

  22. Have you contacted Dell support? Have you tried the Dell forum? http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums...rd.id=dim_audio

    Restore XP

Its best to not let the malware infect your system in the first place. Yes. I have SP3 installed on my XP Home and Pro systems without problems. I think you should follow davey's advice and provide a HijackThis log to see if your system is clean.
  25. I prefer not to keep any financial password information stored on my PC by any other application other than the security provided by the financial organization. I do not keep my banking information stored on my PC because I prefer to go to the bank which is a short walk for me and do my banking needs there so that I know that the transactions are between me and my bank only. Besides walking is good exercise and I need it because I like food and if I didn't walk frequently I would end up looking like Fat Albert fairly quickly.
